Rank these fighters as far as all-time.

Remember, this is not a who do you think would beat who because let's face it. We love to discuss and be so sure saying who would beat who but as this fight just showed, ALL OF US are wrong lots and lots of time.

For me, it would be:

1.- Bernard Hopkins: Has done it all, over and over. Skillfull as you can get, smart, tricky. Rough, tough, amazing longevity sets him apart as the number one for me.
2.- Floyd Mayweather Jr: Other than Calzaghe the only undefeated fighter. Champion at 5 divisions, ranks higher for his better opposition and wizard-like performances in big fights. He would have to keep fighting (Margarito, Pacquiao, Cotto) and beat at least two of them to get the number one spot.
3.- Roy Jones Jr: I don't forget what a terrific fighter he was. However, not even fans can't deny that the sad and sudden downfall he had affects a bit his legacy. The most talented of all the fighters on the list but also probably the only one who couldn't come back to the surface after being defeated and challenged.
4.- Manny Pacquiao: Many will probably jump the gun and rank him higher but don't be so quick. He's clearly one of the best and it's amazing how he can keep pushing himself but beating featherweights or the weakest champion at 130/135 and and a really shot DLH at 147 won't get him to the top 3. He needs a win over a credible champ at 135-140-147. In my opinion he should either challenge Mayweather or go back to 135-140, some solid wins there or a win over Floyd and he goes up.
5.- Joe Calzaghe: You can't deny him no matter how ugly is punches look or how he wasted many years not challenging himself. He's really good, tricky and smart. He's undefeated for a reason. He would have to beat Dawson to go up IMO.
6.- Marco A. Barrera: He's got a special place on my heart I must admit. From this point it's harder to rank them. I just think Barrera's combination of big wins, amazing fights, comebacks and textbook skills should get him this place.
7.- Winky Wright: Yeah, boring perhaps and annoying. He did beat easily two fighters on this list and on a good day he's a challenge for anyone. Terrific slick natural boxer, with a great defense and a stingy jab.
8.- Felix Trinidad: Like Barrera, I rank him here for the combination of big fights, big wins. He didn't have Barrera's longevity and he's probably the least skilled on the list but on deadly power and sharp punching he could get to a lot of them.
9.- Oscar de la Hoya: It would be too easy to rank DLH at the lowest after getting beaten sensless by a Lightweight and not having a clear, defenitive win over the best he fought but he did get some nice wins and fought all the big names, something lots on the list didn't completely do.
10.- Juan Manuel Marquez: It's hard to rank him, he would be higher had he started with the big fights earlier. Terrific little fighter, he may go up if he gets more big fights next.
11.- Shane Mosley: I must say, I've never been on Shane's bandwagon. He got a nice surprising win over nemesis DLH at 147, then should've lost the rematch IMO. From there he never really did anything great to push him foward.
12.- Erik Morales: Mad props for the fights with Barrera and getting a W against Pacman, before getting destroyed in the rematches. At the end of the day he was on the losing end against the guys he fought on the list.

 

Holy shit, who did Calzaghe ever beat that was good? He's the most overrated fighter ever.

Come on, I dislike Joe as much as anyone but he's a very good fighter.

He would box the living shit out of Tito.

 

I agree completely with your list, only I'd have Roy at 2 and Floyd at 3.

That's just bad. How the hell can you rank DLH ahead of Floyd, Calzaghe!?!? Or how can you rank Winky that low, I can't understand.

 

i thought the thread starter said that this is not a who would beat who list. Tito had a more impressive career than Calzaghe.

 

why would i rank winky any higher. the only great fighter he ever beat was Shane Mosley, and this was after Mosley's losses to Forrest. And a better question is how can you rank DLH #9 out of 11 on this list, that's just ridiculous. DLH is a greater fighter than Calzaghe, this should not ever be argued. I also don't understand how you can have Trinidad and Wright ahead of DLH.

 

Winky schooled Shane and Tito and would've done the same to DLH. He was a long time champion at 154 and proved himself to be better overall. About DLH, I gave him a fair ranking. How is he a greater fighter than Calzaghe? Be honest, Oscar doesn't have a signature win. On the biggest fights against the best he fought he either lost (Most of the time) Or got a close, controversial win. Calzaghe ruled 168 for a long time, is clearly the greatest fighter that ever fought there and just beat convincingly (A word not on DLH's dictionary) Kessler and Hopkins, two very good fighters.

 

He schooled Tito after Tito came out of a three year retirement, that win was really not that big.

DLH accomplished more in his carreer, and fought the much better competition throughout. Calzaghe waited until his mid thirties to really test himself, and it was against past their best greats like Hopkins (who is still very good), and Roy Jones Jr. (who is not even good anymore). He also has a win over an old Eubank. His best win is againsT Kessler.

I am pretty sure that DLH will be remembered as the greater fighter by most.

 

By Millie, Lampley, Double L and you probably. The rest of the population not in love with DLH will know who's the better, greater fighter. Kessler alone is a better, more convincing win than anything DLH did. You can discredit any fighter's resume. Yeah, Hopkins wasn't at his complete prime but he's still the only one to beat him convincingly (Other than Roy). Roy was old? Fuck yeah. But so was Whitaker. Only difference, Calzaghe did what he was supposed to do.

After retirement or not, Winky handled Tito fucking easy and would've beaten him any day. He handled Shane when he was coming of some nice victories too, he's clearly a better fighter.

 

If Winky's on that list, then Vernon Forrest should be too.

 

Forrest did shit other than beating Shane, come on.

 

That's the point I'm making...What has Winky done besides drawing with Taylor and losing to Vargas. Surely you don't count the Tito win as significant.

 

Long time Jr. Middleweight champ, on most people's eyes beat Vargas and Taylor, schooled Shane and Tito (Yes, it counts) and didn't get KO'ed by freaking Mayorga. He would've put on a clinic on him. You can't compare them really.

 

Oh, about Forrest, he beat Quartey as well, former 147 champs Baldomir and Piccirillo and arguably won the rematch with Mayorga and he beat UNDEFEATED Sergio Mora. I'm no Vernon apologist, but that's how you are looking at Wright's resume.

 

Quartey really won that fight, everyone knows. Baldomir was done by then and Mayorga won the rematch as well. Mora? Who cares, he 1st lost to him, either way. I'm looking at both objetively, I don't care for either. Winky was a better, greater fighter.

Let's say Manny beats Hatton, he tops the list. I still rank Jones over Hopkins in terms of accomplishments and scoreboard. calzaghe and Hopkins are similar in that their long run was due to weak competition.

Hopkins gets double credit for a guy like Robert Allen and Calzaghe gets two for Mario Veit.

The Jones-Hopkins debate is growing tougher and tougher so long as Bernard continues to outlast the calender (in his own way, anyway). Even for those who cling to the "Bernard was green before being Green was in" argument, I've yet to hear the case presented where he would've bumped off Roy at any point prior to '04 and Roy accomplished enough during that time (including the 1-0 scoreboard) to hold a historical edge IMO, however so slightly it may be today.
