Looked to me like the real thing. Granted is was only Resto, but Ortiz's power, quickness, and poise impressed me in those short 2 rounds. I'd like to see him in with a gate keeper type like Randall Bailey next, then if he passes that test I think he'd be ready for anyone at 140.

He needs a lot more fights before he challenges for a title. Whats the rush? He looks good but he needs to fight some tougher fights. The guy hasnt been tested.

How about having him fight SOMEBODY before he's ready for ANYBODY?

Piss me off that these guys don't fight more often.....fighters should be active and fighter every month or 2...esp. at his level...140 is a rich division with alot of good average guys...at the top......

Wouldn't mind seeing him fight someone like Juan Urango or Herman Ngoudjo (such as the winner of that fight).

I've said it before, but there's a number of untested prospects in this weight class that all need some step up fights in the next year or so.

Hopefully some of them pass those tests.

He doesnt need alot more. 140 isnt THAT deep. You got Hatton, who's probably gonna cash out against Manny, then you got Bradley.. who until he fought Witter, had fought none. From what Ive seen of Ortiz, he has the talent to compete with the best at 140 right now. He'd kill Malignaggi right now. He just needs about one, or two max more fights before he's ready for the title. A fight with Randall Bailey, or Juan Urango next would be a good guage.

I kinda see the stylistic comparison, but I dont see him quite having Cotto's skill set. But perhaps he has a better chin, we dont know yet.

Only thing I dislike about him... voice wise he talks like a combination of Oscar and Juan Diaz.

I like Ortiz. I agree that 140 isn't that great. It's not that hard to get him in there with a very beatable top 5 guy right now. I do worry about his chin though, I know he's been down a couple times already.

I believe he was down against Esalas and Barrientes but I don't know how legit it was. I know for sure I have read he's been dropped.

I didn't see the Barrientes KD, but I don't think the Esalas one was much. He was following up on a knockdown he'd scored, threw a punch, left himself a little out of position, got caught with a right hand and went down. He didn't go down very hard and was up instantly...and it looked like their feet might've gotten tangled up when the punch was thrown.

Thanks, hopefully he has a solid chin. He's young and will be fun to watch IMO. The guy is only 21 years old.

I'm almost positive that the exact same sequence occurred in the Barrientes fight. More so than his chin, his defense is a serious liability. It'll make him hella fun to watch, especially once he starts facing guys that can fight back a little, but also has major crash and burn potential.

With Golden Boy loaded with future but running damn thin on the present, I don't expect much in the way of step-up fights anytime soon for Ortiz - or James Kirkland. Daniel Jacobs, Danny Garcia, the Velazquez twins...

I like Victor though. I think he's a very rich man's version of a 140 pound James Kirkland. I doubt he'll ever be as good as Cotto though.... but who knows... he's only 21 and still improving.

The guys young and hasn't fought anyone. Get off his dick and let him progress at a good pace. He doesn't need the title at age 21. Not everyone needs to be Vargas or Tyson. This is ridiculouse the way anyone gets title shots these days. You look good on HBO by beating a fuckin bum and you get a clown like Xplosive demanding he gets a title shot:lol: pathetic

Oh no doubt, I love watching Vic fight. Shit, I even e-campaigned for him to be on this card back when they were considering friggin' Rey Bautista for the co-feature slot.

I hope he can right some wrongs... most notably learn from all of Nando's past mistakes. Style wise, boxing needs a lot more of fighters like him. Just sucks that he'll most likely be on the slow road to success, at least until GBP can find a way to monopolize 140, perhaps have some of their lightweight harem move up for his benefit.

I actually thought he seemed likeable and he has a great style. Resto has one foot out of the sport, but look forward to seeing Ortiz in the future.

First off, stop stalking me. Second of all dumbass, I didnt say he was ready for a title shot just yet. I suggested his next fight be against a Randall Bailey, or Juan Urango. If he passes that test with flying colors, maybe one more fight, then he'd be ready. And why not? What truly great fighters are thier at 140 right now? Bradley was unknown til earlier this year, and he's considered by many to beat the best at 140. And the 140 "kingpin" Hatton, will never fight any of the contenders. I believe Ricky's last fight will be against Pac.

Yeah, his defense does worry me.

If he'd stayed with Top Rank I'd be a little more confident in his prospects given the way they match their prospects.

I'd probably put Hylon Williams Jr. on that list. Haven't seen too much of him, though, it would be nice if Golden Boy did a little bit more to get their young fighters exposure.

good point, I forgot about Hylon.

The think about Vic and T/R... not sure if they were just pulling bait and switch or were serious, but they were actually rumoring him to face Torres sometime in '08 shortly after his Maussa knockout last year. Of course, once he left, they also promised the same fight to Mike Alvarado... who, while I'm still very high on him, is no closer to a title shot today than he was a year ago.

    Alvarado can't complain, he's got all-important Solo Boxeo Finale.

Torres would've been a good test for Ortiz, though I wonder how serious that talk was. It certainly would've been a risk at that point.

It's interesting, given the way things worked out with Ortiz and Top Rank, to see Lamont Peterson sitting right above him in two of the rankings.

trampler definitely knows how to move prospects much more adeptly than gomez or whatever other goofballs gb has evaluating talent. they should move this kid as cautiously as hbo will allow for him to keep getting exposure on that network. why drop the ball and get him knocked off when he could be a goldmine.
