Is Jim Lampley too emotional during big fights?

I was watching the Dela Hoya - Quartey fight on HBO On Demand, and during the 12th round after Dela Hoya has Quartey on the ropes almost ready to go, I almost think Lampley might be crying out of excitement.

    He says:

"Mitch Halpern is looking on! Halpern is close, he's close. Halpern's going to stop it I think, Dela Hoya is right there...."

As he's saying "right there", I swear I can see Lampley shedding a tear.

Foreman even comments, "It's all yours Jim, it's all yours..." as if he's letting Lampley just burst emotionally.

He was also like this when Dela Hoya stopped Vargas.

Lampley's an ass often! But I'm used to him and HBO wouldn't be the same if he wasn't around. I do think he tends to talk too much. Even during entrances, he should allow the viewers to get a little sense of the atmosphere rather than constantly barking about bullsh*t every second of the telecast.

Depends on the subject, but yes, for any DLH or Barrera fight, on air orgasms are usually expected with the broadcast, in the event that either are doing well enough to give cause for celebration

I remember seeing him start to cry during Olympic coverage...and I think he got choked up after one or two Klitschko fights. (Vitali Klitschko-Corrie Sanders comes to mind).

    He's too emotional, period.

The mention of his daughter in the crowd at MSG during the Bowe-Golota brawl got some criticism at the time (though I don't know if it was that bad). Overall, though, he was by far the most hyper during that whole episode.

"Lou Duva's hurt, Lou Duva's in trouble."

I think I heard Lamps fall a little out of love with Oscar in this last fight.

He sounded like some spurned lover near the end of the fight. :boohoo:

It's good that he gets excited, I like it. I just wish he was a bit more impartial sometimes.

    Agreed all the way.

Also Lampley has an excellent voice for his profession, perhaps the best I have ever heard

Wow Joe, you really don't like Lampley!

I think besides punching his beautiful ex-girlfriend, Lampley seems like a cool guy.

Yeah I love Lampley as a part of the telecast. I just find it peculiar that someone who has been covering fights for as long as he has can still be so emotional.

Merchant is quite the opposite. He's always so stoic, except when he's talking about Manny Pacquiao. While Lampley loves Dela Hoya and Barrera, Merchant obviously loves Pacquiao.

I've spoken to him and he was alright but when a crowd started forming, he started acting stuck up to the crowd. George Foreman is cool as hell though.

It deserved criticism. If he was telling the truth and he was in attendance, then it's pretty shitty of him to remain tucked away safely for the sake of reporting while she's in potential danger (the way he put it). Not exactly a Father of the Year moment, regardless of whatever dramatic angle he was seeking.

It's not just DLH, though. It's Barrera, Klitschko, etc. Most of the HBO house fighters.

He got choked up talking about Mosley's lack of popularity after the Stone fight.

He's a pathetic sports announcer that celebrity-watches that drops names during fights (like Queen Latifa), who spent more time during Adams-Espadas talking about Winona Ryder, who continually comes off like that jack ass waiting for someone to slap him five after the DLH-Camacho ringside interview.

He came into the HBO position at least talking like he was interested in learning more about boxing (and you can hear that just in the way he'd interact with the "expert" commentators like Foreman) but at some point it's like he decided he knew enough or didn't care to know any more.

He's a distraction now as far as I'm concerned.

Lamps does have a great voice, though.

    Yeah, that was weak.

Isn't Part of "Announcing" Describing your SURROUNDINGS???...If HBO's Gonna Take the Time to SHOW Camera Shots of Celebrities, Doesn't it Make Sense for SOMEBODY to Elaborate on WHO it is???...

Perhaps it's just a "Taste" Thing...REED's Always APPRECIATED Lamps' Style, Because it @ Least SEEMS Genuine...

If U Had an Announcer who was OVERTLY "Objective", he'd Run the Risk of Coming Off as DULL or UNcaring...

He said something like Queen Latifa was a neighbor, or former neighbor, not that she was just in the crowd.

And the Ryder shit was about Bones' "marriage proposal".

Like I said, I consider him and his punch stats a distraction.

    LOL

I would not say "TOO" emotional at all..

that's just him and it makes it fun/funny to me :bears:

Lamply is such a DLH lover..he ONLY talks about DLH when he's fighting.. as if the other guy is doing nothing

I really think Lamps would like to have sex with DLH

Not sure, but he was enamored by the fact that Mayweather started talking to him during one fight.

Was it during PBF-Zab when he said something like..."hey, I hung out with Jay-Z last night. I'm hip!"

God, that was terrible... but it was PBF-Zab. Not even that he said it, but fuckin' exclaimed it.

I think the fight to which Mitchell's referring was Floyd-Bruseles, when they were talking about the NFL playoffs and Floyd would basically join the conversation. A fine night for HBO when everyone INCLUDING the fighter is interested in anything other than what's taking place in the ring.

I like Lampley a lot. He has his biases certainly, but I will miss him when he is gone. He was kind of a prick to me the one time i met him a while back and he made fun of my prediction that MAB would defeat Morales in their first match (officially I was wrong but felt rather vindicated by the fight).

I definitely don't think using the 12th round of the Quartey fight is the proper evidence that Lampley gets "too emotional" as that was one of the more unbelievable rounds he had ever called in his career up to that point, still one of my favorite rounds ever in terms of drama.
