Sports Illustrated: Pacquiao Boxer of the Year

SI has picked Pacquiao as its Boxer of the year over Hopkins, Margarito, and Calzaghe (who were also under consideration).

Other awards handed out:

Best Fight - Cotto vs. Margarito
Best KO - Marquez vs. Casamayor
Best Round - Holt-Torres, II, Rd. 1
Top Prospect - Victor Ortiz
Biggest Upset - Hopkins vs. Pavlik
Comeback - Vitali Klitschko

 

Congrats to Pacman. I also think Pac-Hoya should go as biggest upset.

Yeah, i'm not even sure what the candidates were for each category. The list seems 'ok' to me at a glance but i figured Hopkins-Pavlik wasn't the upset of the year. I'm just trying to remember if there was a bigger one than Pac-Oscar.

 

Some quick contenders off the top of my head:

Quintana-Williams
Vera-Lee
Darchinyan-Mijares
Bradley-Witter
Mora-Forrest

Not sure any of those were bigger than Pacquiao-DLH...but there's some others.

 

I thought of Quintana Williams but not sure why i forgot about Darhinyan-Mijares.

Yeah i'd say Pac-ODLH should have received upset of the year.

 

Marquez vs. Vasquez III was this year. :crying:

....and Marquez/Casamayor wasn´t KO of the year, cause I can´t even remember that the fuckin fight ended in a KO. :bangh:

KO of the year could very well be Mosley vs. Mayorga.

 

I missed that. Definetly Marquez-Casa wasn't KO of the year. It was very surprising the fight didn't last the distance but it certainly wasn't KO of the year.

Yep, and if any Casamayor fight should be KO of the year it's his stoppage of Katsidis.

As much as I'd like to say Cotto/Margarito was FOTY because I was there, Vazquez/Marquez was a better fight.

 

That Mtagwa fight was better than it as well.

 

So was Adamek/Cunningham, arguably.

 

Cotto-Margarito was DRAMATIC, but NOT F.O.Y. Material...

It was an impressive and interesting result, but the fight was pretty boring really.

Yeah, if you take away the crowd and and the atmosphere and put it on Friday Night Fights in front of a few hundred fans it wouldn't be the seen the same way, but it's not like this was Trinidad-Mayorga, which got blown way out of proportion in the FOTY discussion in the immediate aftermath.

 

I was disappointed in the fight, big time.

Not just because Cotto lost (although I was rooting hard for him to beat Marge, he's never been one of my absolute favourite fighters, nowhere near people like Morales and Pacman).

More because I was expecting much more of an action fight. The fight was strange. It didn't have much action, or even much drama.

The first few rounds were cotto outclassing Marge, then Marge just slowly started to grind him down, but along the way there was never any furious action (a la Morales/Barrera or Vazquez/Marquez etc) - or even much drama. It was a gradual turning of the tide, and the only time one of them copped a big beating was Cotto in round 7. Apart from that, it was simply not very fun to watch, or exciting.

A pretty far cry from fights like Vazquez/Marquez and other FOTY candidates in recent years.

It was no more of an exciting fight than say... Hatton - Tszyu.

Well, Lampley had it right calling Cotto the "constant retreater".

I agree Vazquez-Marquez III was better, but I don't know about it not being fun or exciting or with the comparison to Hatton-Tszyu.

It wasn't, and if it was, it was marginal.

Both were pretty average fights, with an interesting result.

 

Correction one was incredible and one was garbage.

 

I don't mean to start anything with this, but these seem like the comments of a Cotto fan or someone who really doesn't like Margarito.

I don't know of anyone else who's classified the fight the way you have.

The fight was average at best. Cotto outboxed Marge for a few rounds, then started backpeddling and just got gruond down for round after round by Margarito.

It was not a good fight, no back and forth action, no swinging tide, not particularly fast paced, no real drama.

Morales - Barrera 1 was an incredible fight, Corrales - Castillo was an incredible fight, not Marge - Cotto.

 

Actually there were a few people who agreed with me that the fight wasn't that good, and others said maybe it's because I didn't see it live, and only saw it afterwards, knowing the result.

But no, I saw Vazquez - Marquez 1 afterwards, knowing the result, and the fight was still brilliant.

Marge - Cotto was just a pretty average fight.

What was so good about it exactly? Apart from the fact that Marge beat Cotto up, contrary to what most people predicted?

 

Of course there is no drama, if you know Margarito comes back to turn it around. I´m sure you would have enjoyed it a lot live.

Nah, like I said, I didn't see Marquez - Vazquez 1 live, and still enjoyed that a lot, and the fight still seemed dramatic, even though I knew Marquez won.

Oh and as you know, I'm an Izzy fan, yet I still really enjoyed that first fight.

Honestly, I swear, it has nothing to do with me being a Cotto fan, or a Marge hater, or not seeing it live, it just wasn't as good as I thought it would be.

I obviously knew Marge won before watching it, but quite simply - I was expecting more of an action fight. I thought the fight would be far more violent than it actually was.

I don´t think it´s the fight of the year either. Marquez/Vasquez was just a two way slugfest. Margarito/Cotto draws some of its excitement (besides being a damn good fight) out of the dramatic shift/slow methodical turnaround. It creates the drama of the fight and you probably have to see it live to truly be sucked in.

 

I think this is part of the difference in opinion.

Did you read/hear opinions on the fight before you watched it?

If that's the case, then it's basically like watching a movie that got good reviews that it couldn't live up to.

It's like that after a lot of major boxing events.

It's partly that, I agree. In fact, that's why I never read film reviews before I watch them these days, partly because they give away twists, and partly because a film or book or fight or anything is best when you have no expectations.

So I think it's partly that, but also, even if I saw it without knowing the result, or reading ANYTHING about the fight, I still would have expected a better fight.

Both Marge and Cotto are fairly violent fighters, and I guess I just expected it to be, well, more violent.
