Of all the shitty scores produced in this year's Olympics, Egan's Gold medal fight w/ Zhang was easily among the worst.

Surprised to hear DiBella's going after him, though I guess it's par for the course for Lou to talk out of both sides of his mouth these days. Also curious if Not-So-Sweet Lou is keeping an eye on whatever comes out of Duddy's current stand-off w/ Irish Ropes

Spoke with Dibella a bit last night. He's really high on his heavyweight Tor Hamer (That's his real name).

He wasn't gonna do anything in New York for a while but said something to the effect of, "Thanks to Irish Ropes, I'll have two shows coming up. On in late January and one in February."

Maybe he's making that push.

I'm not saying that everyone should like amateur scoring, but the scoring in the Olympics this year was unlike any I have seen since 1990 or whenever they made the switch.

Russell eager to make Jan. 17 pro debut

U.S. Olympic boxer Gary Russell Jr. will put the disappointing end to his amateur career behind him when he makes his professional debut Jan. 17.

Despite entering the 2008 Beijing Games as a strong bantamweight medal favorite, Russell, of Capitol Heights, Md., never boxed in the Olympics -- he collapsed trying to shed the last two pounds in an attempt to make weight for his 119-pound first-round match. Russell was disqualified.

Although he has not yet partnered with a promoter, Russell, 20, has signed with powerful manager Al Haymon, who guides the careers of former middleweight champion Jermain Taylor, welterweight titleholder Andre Berto, junior middleweight titlist Vernon Forrest, former light heavyweight champion Antonio Tarver, interim junior middleweight titlist Paul Williams and heavyweight contender Cristobal Arreola, among others.

Russell, who will fight in the 126-pound featherweight division, will face an opponent to be named in a four-round bout. His debut will come on the undercard of Berto's title defense against Luis Collazo at a site to be determined.

"I am ready to take my skills and talent onto the professional ranks," Russell said. "I have dreamt of becoming a world champion since I was young and I believe that Al and his team will help me to get to that point.

"I believe my style is perfectly suited to professional boxing. I can't wait to take off the headgear, put on smaller gloves and showcase all of my skills."

Russell, who was 190-11 as an amateur, will continue to be trained by his father, Gary Russell Sr.

His Olympic flameout notwithstanding, Russell was a decorated amateur. At 16, he won a U.S. national title and national Golden Gloves title. At 17, as the youngest member of the U.S. team, he received a bronze at the 2005 world championships. To make the Olympic team, Russell came from the losers bracket to win six consecutive bouts to earn his berth.

Egan set to stay as amateur

Olympic silver medallist Kenny Egan has announced that he is to remain an amateur boxer and target the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The Dubliner, who captained the Irish boxing team in Beijing this year, confirmed his decision at a press conference this afternoon.

He said: 'It's been a crazy four months for me with the media and everything else. When I came home from the Games I was a hero and I was on the back of the papers, then I was on the front of the papers and all sorts.

'It's been a lot to take in and it's only been in the last six weeks that I've had to make a decision (on whether to stay amateur or go professional).'

There had been initial speculation that he would follow his international team-mate Darren Sutherland into the professional ranks.

Sutherland began his pro career last night with a first round stoppage of Bulgaria's Georgi Iliev at Dublin City University.

But Egan, who says his style is more suited to amateur boxing, is determined to add to his already impressive haul of amateur honours and go one step better in London in four years' time.

'At the start of it, when I put on a pair of gloves I just wanted to qualify for the Olympic Games. I just wanted to be an Olympian.

'I achieved that and I got to the Games and I've won my medal. Then I was saying, 'let's turn pro', but with all of the people around me and probably the wrong people - some of them were.

'Some of them were talking through their rear ends saying I should go pro and make millions and everything else.

'It was only in the last few days where I had to give myself a good shake and say that the pro game is not suited to my style. I have adapted to the amateur game perfectly and I know it inside out.'

The 26-year-old revealed that he had offers from three different promoters to turn professional but turned them down in favour of an improved deal with the Irish Sports Council.

'I've learned so much through the High Performance (Unit) over the past five years and not only am I a senior over the last five years, I'm senior the past eight or nine years.

'But I think through the High Performance I've gotten better, much better, and I have to hold that to my coaches Billy (Walsh) and Gary (Keegan), who set up the whole thing too. Without them I wouldn't be here today and my family as well - my mother, father and brothers.

'This is my decision, I'm sticking by it 100 percent for the next four years. Hopefully I can remain senior champion for the next four years - it's going to be tough.

'There are going to be young lads coming through the ranks who will be nipping at my heels but it is up to me to try and put the hard work in and go out there.

'I didn't have a focus last week or the week before about what I was doing. There was talk of me making my pro debut in Madison Square Garden in March.

'Then there was another one where I was getting back into the ring for the seniors. But now I know what I'm doing.'

Irish Amateur Boxing Association President Dominic O'Rourke was clearly delighted with Egan's decision not to turn pro.

'Kenny's decision is fantastic news and the fact that he is remaining in the amateur ranks is a tremendous boost for the IABA,' he said.

'His presence and experience on the Irish team will serve as an inspiration to all the talented young boxers coming through up through the systems we have put in place.

'This year has been a year of unprecedented success for Irish amateur boxing as we have won medals in every international tournament we have entered in 2008.

'With the continuing support of the Irish Sports Council, I believe we can build on that success next year and Kenny's decision to remain amateur can only help us in that regard.'

Egan's focus is now trained on the Irish National Senior Championships and retaining his light heavyweight title.

'I'm getting ready for the National seniors on 5 February. I will be going down to the (National) Stadium and weighing in at 81 kilos, please God if I can take off a few pounds. I've the blinkers on and I'm good to go.'

Casting his mind forward to London 2012, Egan is evidently keen to lead by example once again and help the Irish team better their three-medal haul from this year's Olympics.

'Boxing is all about ups and downs and I know over the next four years, I mightn't win every fight but that's what the amateur game is about.

'I'm looking forward to every fight and getting in the ring with a vest and a headguard on and with the Ireland singlet on.

'Please God I'll lead the Irish team - I don't know who is going to be on it in four years' time - hopefully I'll be a part of it and lead them into London 2012 which is only across the water.

'I think it's going to be a great Games for Ireland personally. I'm not just thinking about the next four years, I'm thinking about the future here.

'Because another reason why I'm staying amateur is that I would love to give back what I have learned over the last number of years straight back into the sport and become a coach with the High Performance. Hopefully lead all the other boxers.

'I know myself the standard we have now, it's brilliant and you've seen it yourselves this year. It's been the best year in Irish amateur boxing history ever.

'It's just going from strength to strength, especially with the lads and even Katie Taylor. I hope to God I'll be over in London with her in four years' time as well,' he added.

Sutherland makes quick work of debut

BOXING MIDDLEWEIGHT BOUT:IT MIGHT not have been the most important fight of the card in terms of titles but Darren Sutherland was the headline act last night after a stunning professional debut in Dublin City University's Sports Hall. The 26-year-old entered the ring to a chorus of approval from the home crowd and swiftly gave them a brief but impressive glimpse of the future when the referee stepped in to stop the fight after just two minutes and 44 seconds of the first round.

Wearing emerald green shorts with white trim, Sutherland faced the thickset Bulgarian, Georgi Iliev, whose only other visit to Ireland had resulted in the knockout of Castlebar's Keith Cresham.

But this was a different stage and, more importantly, a different opponent and from the very start of the fight it was clear not only was Iliev out of his depth in class but he was less physically in shape. Very quickly his porous defence became evident and Sutherland exploited the latter at will almost as soon as the fight began.

Sutherland staggered his opponent for the first time in the opening seconds and almost immediately a cut appeared under Iliev's left eye. After a minute of back pedalling, Iliev was blowing hard as Sutherland was landing dangerous straight lefts at will both to the head and body.

Another clean punch that put the Bulgarian backwards prepared the crowd for what was looking very like a much quicker end than Sutherland or even his fast-talking manager Frank Maloney could have imagined.

When Sutherland landed a right coming up to the three-minute mark, the referee jumped in to end the match. Iliev was bleeding, had taken three punches that had knocked him backwards and frankly had no future whatsoever in the same ring as Ireland's new Super middleweight.

There was only ever a slim chance of the Irish Olympic medallist losing out to an opponent who could be best described as having a patchy record and Sutherland came into the fight having spent his first four weeks as a professional in Maloney's base in London. Maloney had spotted his new fighter during his bronze medal-winning middleweight run in Beijing last summer and offered him a two-year contract shortly after the Games ended.

That his first fight was staged in the campus where he had been a student helped attract a close to capacity crowd of 1,400 with many of Sutherland's student colleagues present to add their support.

After his brief debut, Ireland has another professional to add to an ever-growing list. An Irish title bid at the end of next year and the world after that? Sutherland has never been one to aim low.

"In the dressing room I felt naked without the headgear," he said afterwards. "It felt good out there. I was maybe a little disappointed I didn't get more rounds under my belt and I took a couple of silly jabs.

"My objective is to improve with every fight. This is my first professional fight and there was a lot to take in, but we will step it up from here. People ask me what I want for Christmas; this is it right here, I love getting into the ring and fighting."

In the EBU Super bantamweight title fight Rendall Munroe beat Italian Fabrizo Trotta. The man, who Bernard Dunne has claimed is ducking him, won in the fifth round by a TKO. Trotta pulled up sharply holding his right hand after hitting Munroe on the head with a straight shot.

The fight that was billed as the bin man (Munroe, who comes into the ring wearing a high viz yellow vest, is a bin man) against the cabby ended after 1 minute and 27 seconds of the fifth after Trotta was examined by a doctor. In the Commonwealth Bantamweight title fight Nottingham's Jason Booth stopped Pontefract's Sean Hughes in the 10th round. The title holder floored his opponent with a body shot before his corner pulled him at the end of the round.

Dublin's Ken Egan is expected to make an announcement today on his future in boxing. Ireland's silver medallist from Beijing has openly spoken about a move from amateur boxing into the professional ranks but was taking time out to make up his mind.

The middleweight has not boxed since the Olympic Games.

I do weird things while (only technically, it appears) on vacation. Like, for example, wonder if the sport of boxing is alive and wonder if Duncanville fighter Luis Yanez is well.

The answer: Yes. And Yes.

A lil' boxing birdie whispered to me this morning that Yanez - who flamed out amidst much controversy at last summer's Olympics - will make his professional boxing debut during a six-fight card February 20 at American Airlines Center.

There will be a Jan. 30 press conference and the fight will be televised by Fox Sports Net. I've now exhausted my knowledge of Yanez, the event and boxing.

I didn't think Russell looked particularly good for a US olympian making a debut. He got hit way too much and didn't show me anything special...at all. He didn't suck or anything, but it was only a C performance, imo.

Super-Heavyweight bronze medalist David Price has turned pro with Haymaker promotions. Price is 6'9.......i'm not convinced that he'll go all that far but he'll be a handy sparring partner for David Haye.......Haye-Wlad is close to being finalised for June 20th in London.

Australian Olympian Paul Fleming, a highly-decorated amateur ranked #1 as a featherweight in Australia, has signed with Top Rank.

Todd duBoef, president of Top Rank, made the announcement today.

Fleming, 20, is very popular in the SunCoast area of Australia. "He's exciting, a very tough southpaw with a whole lot of pop in his gloves," said co-manager Cameron Dunkin.

Fleming, born in Tully, North Queensland, Australia, had an amateur record of 83-17. He won many gold medals and was only the third Australian fighter to medal (bronze) in the 2006 World Junior Championships. Fleming was the first Australian to win the gold at the Pre-Olympic Chemistry Cup. At Bejing, Fleming lost 13-9 to silver medalist Khedafi Djekkhir of France. Fleming is the only Australian Olympian to sign a contract with a major promotional company. He has a 1-0 professional record.

Guillermo Rigondeaux, a two-time Cuban Olympic bantamweight gold medalist (2000 and 2004) who defected in February, is preparing to make his professional debut May 22 in Miami on "Friday Night Fights" (ESPN2). The 28-year-old southpaw is one of the most decorated amateurs in history, compiling two separate streaks of 200-plus wins to go with his two gold medals.

He is finalizing a promotional agreement with Arena USA, director of boxing operations Luis DeCubas told ESPN.com. DeCubas has vast experience with Cuban fighters and "to me, he is the greatest Cuban amateur ever and maybe the greatest amateur period in the history of boxing. He's like a Pernell Whitaker that can punch with either hand."

Rigondeaux, who will box professionally at junior featherweight, idolizes Whitaker, who will be part of his training team, DeCubas said.

Rigondeaux hasn't boxed since a failed attempt to defect during the 2007 Pan American Games in Brazil. He was caught, returned to Cuba and kicked off the team. Despite all the amateur fights and long layoff, DeCubas believes he'll be a top pro.

"He's had some time off and that sometimes helps a fighter," DeCubas said. "He's just a terrific fighter."

Considering the dredge that is most of the HW division right now, I think Price might actually do well. The guy is BIG, reasonably quick and has plenty of pop.
