Sorry guys, but I see Khan being very cautious and using his superior speed and quickness to keep the smaller Barrera at bay. Khan won't have the worry of being KO'd here because Barrera is so past his best and smaller than him that he'll be able to take his time, take no risks, and cruise to a UD. Barrera is going to look old and slow.

Moron is right, mate. As I recall we both basically called Khan within watching about 2 pro fights - physically gifted, ZERO intelligence, zero ability to fight inside or to negotiate range. And this was then most British commentators were talking him up as the new Ray Leonard. Leonard probably had more boxing nous when he was 7 years old than Khan will ever have.

 

It is the single best predictor of pro success that I am aware of.

 

I'm suprised so many are so sure that barrera will splatter him. Khan will dwarf him and is as fast as manny if not possessing a fraction of the game manny has shown recently. Khan showed signs of improvement against fagan, he wasn't as gung ho or wild.

Barrera may be past his best, but he isn't shot a la kevin kelley or fernando vargas. He still had a close fight with JMM and lasted the distance against Pacquiao. I believe that his experience will be the factor. He will find a way to tag Khan and hold him, like he did last time against Morales.

 

It's the only real predictor of pro success that I'm aware of, so that's not saying much. I'd say the carry over from amateur boxing to the pro game is down to about 60% these days. Obviously you need some sort of big time talent to get to the top of either and to that extent it's a fair predictor. But to the extent guys like Khan completely taylor their style to the amateur game (jumping in and out, relying completely on speed and pity pat punches from range, never bothering to learn any subtlety or in fighting) the more they handicap themselves in the pro ranks.

With Khan's physical gifts, if he had skipped the Olympics and flown himself aged 19 over to an LA gym and just started fighting one crafty bum every three weeks like young fighters used to do he'd be 10x the fighter he is today. Modern amateur boxing is fucking cancer on the sport, IMO.

 

Even with his size and reach advantage, Amir Con pretty much has to make as little mistakes as possible and utilize his height and reach to win. We all know what happens when Con's chin gets touched.

 

Make up your mind. Would you not draw too many conclusions from amateur boxing because it is a fucking joke or is it a fair predictor because it takes big time talent to get to the top of it?

The other predictor of pro success is early pro success, a la feeding on crafty bums, developing skills that way, and projecting. Imo, that is far less reliable.

Another predictor is listening to trainers, fighters, etc. and their assessments of a fighter's talents.

Another predictor is your own assessment.

Another predictor is the level of competition fought to date. (Teddy Atlas' favorite).

Another predictor is results of past fights.

Baseball and football would be good examples where amateur success probably isn't as good a predictor as scout assessments.

I just said it has about a 60% carry over. That's about as clear and concrete an opinion as I can possibly give you. And no, success in the pros isn't a predictor of pro success, prior to a pro career, which is quite obviously what I was talking about.

 

He's not as fast as Manny, but yes he's faster than Barrera.

Khan can show all the improvement he wants, but it was against a low level opponent, it doesn't tell us much.

I wouldn't be SHOCKED if khan somehow won, barrera has looked pathetic recently, but I still think khan is a tomato khan with fast hands, I think Barrera is still too good for him, even at this stage.

 

after sparring with pac it seems that amir feels confident that he can beat barrera, i'm sure roach and pac told him so. Maybe he even thinks he can beat pac.

to go off topic for a sec, amir would be the perfect spy to report back to the hatton camp if the hatton/pac fight was signed. i'm thinking thats one of the reasons pac possibly turned down the fight against Hatton.

I find this to be hilarious. Some scrub from the street with total disregard for sportsmanship in general, his supposed role or the Khan/Barrera bout casually butting Barrera in the face for a DQ, if the underlying tone of the report is true. Maybe he just whooped Barrera and was DQ´d on a accidental headbutt.

 

It's hard to believe MAB is still only 35. It also blows my mind that he was in there with a guy who was 1-8-1.

 

That was ridiculous. That's what they get for putting the lesser fighter at risk.

 

Me too, it's slightly surreal actually, a fighter as highly regarded and as high profile as barrera?? I didn't even have a clue he was fighting. How utterly bizarre.
