The man is the most amazing fighter I've ever seen. The fastest, quickest and smartest fighter ever imo. But his passion for what he was doing was never there. He talked candidly about it,...and when Gerald McClellan got fucked up in the ring,...it affected Jones to the point that it took a level or two of Roy's aggression away. Once Roy got hurt for the first time?.........he hasn't been the same since. Scared to get hurt and THUS..isn't a warrior. But if he had the mentality of Roberto Duran? He probably would still be undefeated TODAY, imo.
Nope, it wasn't the mentality. Roy skills were just never as good as his God given talents. Once the talent diminished, the skills weren't there to back him off.
One of Roy Jones problems was that he moved up to division where the talent was scarce...whoever he beat just wasn't good enough....and even the guys he supposedly avoided like MichalShitSky were not good enough to carry his spit bucket.....sorry.....but Jones shoud've still found a way to fight him....*Mosley vs. Margarito is a clear example of "thats why we fight the fight"* Had he been around 130-154 during his prime year he would've accomplish alot more and mighta been consider all time top 10 great.....w/ the Mosley,Mayweather,Trinidad, DLH, Tszyu, Castillo, Corrales, Freitas,Casamayor,Quartey,Winky around those weights...there was no way he could've avoided any of them...... NOT THAT he avoided anyone in his career...he didn't...IMO...
I don't get how Roy became such a bitch towards contact anyway. It isn't like he was brought up that way. He trained hard, his father was treating him like a sweatshop worker, yet when he hits the pros and dumps his dad he turned into Mr.safety first. Look how Shane came up, fighting mexicans and learning that take it and dish it out style that most black fighters like Floyd & Roy seem to want to avoid. Worst thing is most fighters coming up seem to want to be like them and be all finness and safe rather than tough, and aggressive. It's one of the things killing the sport. There is nothing wrong with defense but don't let it affect your offense.
We have to look back and realize rjj went a decade amd a half being indefeated. that in itself say's how good he was
If Roy wasnt a warrior he woulda quit on his stool against Joe. But he didnt wanna be confused for a cross dressing statatory rapist.
Well, let me rephrase the word "warrior" for you. To me, a boxer who is a "warrior" wins at all costs. Sometimes stupid cost. Roy Jones was always a safety first fighter. He probably is the best fighter I've ever seen.........but he was never a warrior in my book.
that must break jones jr's heart. there weren't too many warriors willing to stand and trade punches with the guy, take that for what its worth.
Nice one Lib four lib,... and you stuck to your fella through his losses and are the only TRUE Mosely fan amongst a fuckload of johnny come lately Fraud groupies. You can celebrate Shane's victory with the highest honour.
RJ "wasn't a warrior" because no one could touch him. Most of the light heavyweight fighters that he fought were brawlers and would have loved to slug it out with him but he was so good that he rarely was touched by them in his prime.
yep. and the solid "chin" that RJJ was purported to have had could've simply been a symptom of his quickness, and the fact that he could win fights without taking very many chances.
Why Don't More "Warriors" Fight like RJ???... How Many "Warriors" DOMINATED their Sport for 15-16 Years, thru 4 Weight Classes???... REED:hammert:
Exactly. As if a lot of the "warriors" out there could fight like Roy but choose not to because they are so brave and just want to entertain the fans.
Word. Sounds like Kid Dynamite's old theory that anybody could fight the same way and be as succesful as Lennox Lewis but most had too much skill and pride not to do it
Yep. If i could fight a "certain way" i'd be the undisputed champion for many years but i'm just such a macho man that i won't. :notallthere::laughing:
So true. If we want to knock the terrible negotiations and overvaluing himself, by all means. But to knock a style of fighting (common by Larry Merchant types) because it protects a guy from getting hit in the head while STILL WINNING THE FIGHT (think the difference between a guy like Mayweather or Wright, compared to a guy like Derrick Gainer), it may limit marketability, it may be annoying, but it is incredibly smart. Ironically, Jones has LOST some of that intelligence; enough that he can't see the writing on the wall, due to his ego.
The whole point of this thread was missed. This wasn't to dismiss his vast accomplishments and unmatched speed and skill.. I just wish ....as a Roy Jones fan.....he had HAD a warrior mentality. Maybe his chin wouldn't allow that, I don't know. But IMO, if Jones were a warrior...he would have killed people in the ring.
