good video on the bbc link for british users Joe Calzaghe retires from boxing Feb 5 2009 Welsh boxing king Joe Calzaghe has announced his retirement from the ring. The undefeated super-middleweight and light-heavyweight champion has called time on his glittering career three months after defeating American legend Roy Jones Jnr in his last fight. The 36-year-old's future has been the subject of much speculation, with Calzaghe refusing to confirm he was to hang up his gloves. But he told the BBC: "It was a difficult decision but I have achieved everything I wanted to achieve in boxing. "I have been world champion for 11 years and I have got no other goals to go for. Tht's why I'm calling it a day." And the Newbridge fighter admitted the wishes of his family had played a major part in his decison to quit. "I had a long think with my family," he said. "My children wanted me to give up, plus my mum. That's why I called it a day and will go on to do something else." Asked if he would consider coming out of retirement, he said: "My decision is to retire. I've been boxing for 25 years and, like I said, I've achieved everything I want to achieve. "You can never say never in this game, but I can't see myself boxing again. There's loads of things I want to do. I'm proud to be one of only a few fighters in history to retire undefeated." Calzaghe, whose final career record reads 46 wins from 46 fights, now plans to concentrate on charity work and a career in boxing promotion.
listening to the interview, he sounds like he's actually trying to give himself fellatio. what a putz.
Damn. I was so looking forward to Calzaghe-Jones II, Calzaghe-Hearns, Calzaghe-Leonard and Calzaghe-Duran.
kudos to calzaghe. he solidified his career in the last 3 years and made the most $ he could. not unbeatable, but a great fighter nonetheless.
let's see, after the frock-taylor fight, if slappy is happy to stay retired. anyway, get this guy outta there, he hasn't done much good for boxing.
I agree. For someone with his record, his stature should be much greater. I can't see any kid wanting to fight like Joe Calzaghe. The same kid would of course dream of having the success Calzaghe had, but not emulate his fighting style. That's hilarious.
Disagree. He's one of the prime examples of the USA not having all of the best fighters. Not that it shuts up all of the dipshits who haven't seen this all along, but it probably has changed the minds of some and shut up a lot.
pussy. best guy he beat was Mikkel Kessler. who knows at this point how good he is. i would've liked to see Sloppy vs. Andrade. Styles make fights. Don't tell me because Kessler beat him easily that Sloppy would've. And Dawson? Tarver? Johnson? So many names out there Sloppy refused to fight. What a puss.
What's with that BS? There are plenty of other fighters who made that statement besides Calzaghe. His seniors tour of the US was a joke.
We Got the HINT about 5-10 YEARS Ago, when Lennox Lewis was Dominating the Sports PREMIERE Division... REED:hammert:
So Beating a 39 Year Old Roy & a 42-43 Year Old Hopkins Makes him the "Best Ever"???.... REED:hammert:
Way past his prime.... Past his prime..but still 25% of the fighter he use to be... past his prime..and not as good as the two above him.... Calzaghe is a good fighter...top 100 all times..maybe...but not all time great....best fighter he ever beat who was in his prime was Kessler...
Not even close. Also, Hatton TKO 11 Tszyu is more impressive than anything Calzaghe ever did in a boxing ring.
lets not pretend the Lennox thing was anything other than a Canada bias:: I agree on all counts, for the record
"Clear"???... Lennox was THE MAN in 1 Division...Calzaghe was THE MAN @ 168 & Beat the Ring Magazine Champ @ '75...Sure, Lennox's Resume is BETTER, but Calzaghe WOULDN'T have Been KO'ed TWICE by Guys the Caliber of McCall or Rahman.... REED is Inclined to Rate Lennox HIGHER, but it's NOT a "Clear" Case... REED:hammert:
