No Problem... "I'm a big Roy Jones fan and to be honest, he's the only guy in the world that I really don't want to fight. He seems to be the perfect fighter and you just can't hit the guy. Look at what Jones did to Richard Hall who then fights Dariuz Michaelczweski and bashes him up for 11 rounds. I like to watch Jones fight and see his moves. He carries an aura that he takes into the ring with him. It's 100 percent confidence and he knows he's going to win. You can tell that he doesn't take his talent for granted though because he obviously trains very hard and keeps in tremendous shape." - Joe Calzaghe, June 28th, 2003 It was Posted by IMDAZED Last Year...Post # 11 http://www.fightbeat.com/forums/showthread.php?t=25245&highlight=Imdazed REED:hammert:
Yeah Joe was never the greatest at evaluating the current status of a fighter. Just like he thinks Hall fought a prime Darisuz, he thinks he himself fought a prime Roy. He can talk all the crap he wants, but the truth is he hasn´t fought a single great fighter of his generation at their peak. He was just able to preserve himself a little longer by being at least 2-3 years younger than Ottke, Dariusz, Roy and Hopkins.
I've been watching fights since 2000? So you say I'm a nobody but you act like you're bringing up facts about me? Add creepy mofo to your list of traits. Even though you obviously want to know more about me then you lead to believe, I honestly think you should pick Chad Dawson for your new mancrush. I have been watching Boxing since before 2000 and have the handles on other messageboards to prove it. Just know that Calzaghe did what I said he would years ago.
firstly, he doesn't say what you said secondly, it is an unattributed quote from another poster and thirdly, i don't buy it.....google any segment of that quote into google and all you get are forum posts.......i think it is made up... ...Calzaghe has spoken on the subject of Roy Jones so many times, and whilst always full or admiration, i can't recall, or imagine him saying anything like that......one of Calzaghe's strengths is his own feeling of invincibility....he hasn't lost since he was 14/15....he always believes he will win....i find those comments utterly unbelievable that not only would he say those things, but that they would go so widely unnoticed... ..but if someone wants to back up their own point so much, it is very easy fabricate such a thing
YOU Said YOURSELF that Mosley-DeLa I was the Fight that Made YOU a Boxing Fan...That Fight Took Place N 2000, Homegirl...REED DOESN'T Care to Know SHIT about U; that's Something YOU Revealed... So Like REED Said, Considering Roy Jones was on the Radar Beginning In 1988, it's NOT Surprising to REED that U're NOT High on Him...To YOU, James Toney is just a Name on Roy's Resume, but to Those that were Actually ATTENTIVELY Watching Boxing Back Then, we KNOW what a MONSTER Toney was Perceived to B, Going into that Fight w/Roy... It's Called PERSPECTIVE, Mija...& You DON'T Have it... REED:bears:
Sorry to Ruffle your Calzaghe Feathers...IMDAZED is a Boxing Writer Named Kenneth Bouharie....Last Time REED Checked, he had a Pretty GOOD Reputation & ISN'T Known as the Type to "Make Up" Shit... Shit, REED that Particular Thread & Notice how NOBODY Disputes Bouharie's Quote.... "He's THE ONLY Guy in the World I Really DON'T Want to Fight" U ASKED, REED DELIVERED...PERIOD... REED:hammert:
I said DLH-Mosley 1 made me a hardcore fan, difference being fan and hardcore fan, so what were you saying about perspective? :: You should read your own previous post and see how much of a weirdo you come across like:laughing: Since you obviously want to know more about me you can ask TexMex, I remember that dude on boards since like 98
Exactly... So U're CONFESSING to Being a CASUAL Fan of Boxing, Until LESS than 9 Years Ago...NO Casual Fan has the PERSPECTIVE of a HARDCORE Fan, No Matter WHAT Sport it is....Yet U Talk SHIT on Roy Jones as if U were Paying Attention During his PRIME, Which U WEREN'T by YOUR OWN Admission... U're an EMBARRASSMENT to your Posting Handle, Homegirl...U're Only Qualified to "ANALyze Matchups" from the Year 2000 to the Present... REED::
I hold my hands up..... .....no seriously i do.......i just dug up this little nugget i found on one of the aforementioned forum threads.... "I could probably give Jones a tough fight, probably the best fight he's ever had," said Calzaghe. "But I know my capabilities and unless I got paid the crown jewels I wouldn't want to risk it." http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/sport...ls/I+am+the+best,+says+honest+Joe+/article.do ....very surprised, as i mentioned earlier, i think Calzaghe surprised himself in some of his later performances and gained a greater self-belief that was lacking and perhaps evident in his opponent selection for quite some period ....yet, he is probably right.....i don't dispute that a pre-heavyweight Jones would beat Calzaghe.....and at that time, Calzaghe was humble enough to draw the same conclusion .....glad i pulled you up on it, because as i said those quotes have gone largely unnoticed......i'd love to hear what Calzaghe would say now, in retrospect
If you can quit gargling Roy's ballsack for one second, you can see clearly that I have not disputed being a hardcore fan for less than 9 years ago. So I cannot talk shit about a fighter unless I followed them their entire career? No it doesn't sound stupid to me:laughing:
A wise move by Joe, there will always be the "next" guy to fight, I like many will criticise Joe for his early career but he did finish strong against Lacy, Kessler, B-Hop....
Calzaghe has always been a fan of roy, that quote seems legit to me. He retired after beating his idol. I hope the man keeps his fortune and his health. Thanks to Joe for some good fights.
Ottke was about three levels below Calzaghe as a fighter; he stayed at home as much as Joe did and needed help from judges and referees to beat the guys that Joe beat with ease (and was mocked for even fighting in the first place) Fuck Ottke MTF
I remember thinking the same thing when I first saw it last year too. You could tell how much Joe respects Roy- I felt that in their 'fight' Joe stopped really trying to hurt him after he cut him in the mid rounds. Itwas almost like he felt bad for Jones (which I sad at the time and thought reflected poorly on the fight having took place at all) In 2003 etc, Joe would have given Roy plenty to think about, but even his most ardent supporters would admit that he would have lost to Roy. No shame in that, but truth nonetheless. MTF
so we all agree: prime roy > prime slappy > prime ottke & adolf eichmann > the belgian ref for ottke-reid
I'm not sure that Joe would, truthfully, say anything different now mate. Joe comes accross as arrogant, and maybe he is a little now, but I agree with you in that until the Lacy fight he didn't really think he was as good as he turned out to be and that goes some way to explaining the mooks he defended his title against for so long. I always thought that Werren and Joe thought the Lacy fight a cash-out fight and both were surprised with the ease with which Joe handled Jeff which in turn led to Joe finally taking the kind of risks he should have been taking for years beforehand. The shame, of course, is that he wasted a whole chunk of his career building his record rather than taking the big fights, which will always count against him historically. MTF
:: The ref for Ottke-Reid was beyond corrupt. I'll never forget that wonderful moment that he docked Reid a point for having the temerity to throw a jab at Ottke... MTF
The fights with Mitchell were a few months apart anyway, so who fought who first was irrelevant really- though I really should stop posting when very drunk...:: What counts is that Mitchell might well have gotten the decision against Ottke had he been fighting anywhere bar Germany, whilst Calzaghe stopped him inside five minutes. MTF
Jesus Christ! A Judge! That's like removing Hanzy from his job at the kindergarten and installing him as head of an orphanage. :notallthere:
i didn't get that sense at all. Calzaghe was mocking RJJ and clowning him. I don't think he carried him at all. I think he just didn't want to take any chances having been knocked down in the first round he knew RJJ, even the hand-picked geriatric version, could hurt him, and he was way ahead on the score-cards, so why try to finish him? Or put himself at harm's way? He had RJJ completely intimidated. He did to RJJ what RJJ had done to many of his opponents: tamed them into pussies and then rode out the rest of the rounds. Shame on Calzaghe for not fighting any top fighters until they were well beyond their best, and then acting like he's some kind of all time great because he beat those guys. Kessler was the best fighter Calzaghe fought his entire career. That should tell you all you need to know about how good he was. Not that good. Certainly not an all-time great. He falls under the category of one of the all-time greatest managed fighters. But if he were truly a great fighter, he wouldn't have a 0 in his loss column. Just doesn't happen.
By the way, Tszyu is so fucking overrated it's not even funny. I picked Hatton to beat Tszyu and it was a good win, but the 40 something Hopkins is a far, far superior fighter to any version of Tszyu, and that same hopkins would beat any version of Tszyu P4P. That same hopkins went on to dominate the shit out of Pavlik in his next fight. Hopkins is a much better win. Kessler not as high a profile a win, but Kessler is probably at least as good as Tszyu was, probably better - ability wise.
So he retired knowing he beat the shadow of a great fighter he knows would beat him in his prime. I think that pretty much says all about Joe's character.
