Good riddance. I wanted him to lose before he retired but at least boxing will be spared of his ugly amateurish style from this point forwards.
It was a one-on-one interview with Curtis McCormick shortly after Jones beat Ruiz. Curtis is on my facebook page and has been writing for years. Forgot where the Calzaghe interview was posted but feel free to hit him up and I'm sure he can provide you the rest of the interview.
Joe's win over Hopkins might well be his best win; Pavlik was demolished and all and sundry had Kelly in their top ten P4P. You and I have picked Joe over all-comers for a good while now. There isn't a single fighter I'd pick to beat him. Not one. That's how good he was. MTF
hahah...nice find mate. I have to say I've never been so disgusted by a match up as I was with Calzaghe-Jones. That he retired on the back of that really cements my contempt for the guy.
I hope he just opens up a resturant in germany or something then he'll really have come to what was his real calling... bussing tables in Germany
:bears: I hope he's a hands on business owner. When I think of the fact that Calzaghe will never have to work another day in his life, I want to puke.
:bears: Exactly. If you look at the haters in this thread you'd see the same names that picked easy wins for Lacy, Kessler, Hopkins, and RJJ. Didn't happen for them. Now they're :crying: artie:
Indeed, and I do remember you and I and maybe one other FB poster picking Calzaghe against all the above. The haters can come to this thread with their attempts to detract status from an undefeated 46-0 champion who they picked to lose in the big fights (And most of which admitted they were huge fights prior), but sometimes sour grapes instills hatred in these mooks.
uh no Tszyu was actually undisputed champ in the division he was fighting in, having actually beaten more than one guy from the division in which he occupied.....not like Hopkins fraudulent stay at 175
I thought Jeff Lacy was going to knock his head clear across the Atlantic, and he beat the dogshit out of Left Hook. The man is a truly great fighter, even though I never liked his style.
If this is it for Joe Calzaghe, I wish him all the best. He has had a fine career: notched a 46-0 record; was the “world†champion in two divisions; made millions of dollars; remained loyal to his trainer/manager/father; scored wins over fellow champs like Roy Jones, Bernard Hopkins, Chris Eubank, Mikkel Kessler, Robin Reid, Richie Woodhall, Jeff Lacy, Byron Mitchell and Charles Brewer; and he gets out with his looks, money, a lot of fame in his homeland and all his marbles. Good job, Joe. The more guys who finish on top (like Calzaghe and Lennox Lewis) the better it is for the sport. More athletes may start to see boxing as a game that you can compete in, have success and get out without suffering a debilitating injury. I think the guys who hang on too long, go broke, and live up to the negative stereotype do more damage to the sport than most of us realize.
I can understand that, but fighters vacate titles all the time to move up weight classes. The natural progression is broken then, too. And a lot of fans get frustrated when a guy stays in one division too long and doesn't move up to take on bigger challenges. Calzaghe was a top fighter for the better part of a decade. Engaged in some big fights. He had a lot of adoring fans. Made a lot of money. Never lost. And he's retiring on top. The sport seems to need more ambassadors like that. More power to him. It's a great way to exit the stage.
If you clean out a division, it bothers me far less, but I also don't like moving up with real challenges left, a la Floyd never fighting Casa or Freitas. Right now, Calz has some real challenges out there, particularly Dawson.
Kessler is currently the number-one rated super middleweight in the world by Ring magazine. Hopkins will be the number-one rated light heavyweight in the world by Ring -- he's currently number two behind Calzaghe. And that's after Calzaghe has beaten both of them. Joe has beaten the top two guys in the last two divisions he's competed in. It's not like he left without fighting the top guy in both divisions. He left after beating both. No need to overstay your welcome. People miss you more if you leave early, as opposed to staying too long. It's best to leave them wanting more. Chad Dawson would have to win his next 19 fights in a row, all via successful title defense, to equal Calzaghe's 46-0 record with 22 successful title defenses. Calzaghe has been fighting since he was a child. He fought who he fought. He doesn't need to prove anything else ... especially to the third-best light heavyweight who may never come close to equaling what Calzaghe has done. Just because people "think" Dawson might give him a tough fight, doesn't mean he needs to stick around. The same people thought Jeff Lacy would run Calzaghe out of the ring, and Lacy didn't win a minute of any round. There's always someone around who thinks they can beat you. If Calzaghe wants to leave the ring, then I congratulate him on a fine career. He's earned it.
Wow, Dubblechin...long time no talk. It's David L from Boxingpress/Secondsout. I haven't seen you post here in ages.
everyone and their fucking daddy were screaming for the lacy bout. calzaghe beat the fuck outta him then all of sudden lacy is a bum. he beats kessler in the biggest 168lb. fight ever and outpoints hopkins in a close fight followed by an icing on the cake and a very lucrative win vs. jones. is there a better way to retire?
