Definitely NOT a Bad Comparison.... The ONE Time REED's Seen Gamboa Hurt on a Knockdown was when the Guy Clipped him w/an ELBOW on the END of a Punch...& if REED's NOT Mistaken, Gamboa KO'ed the Dude N the Very NEXT Round..... REED:mj:
gamboa looks like he could get KTFOed. pryor usually got right back up from knockdowns and didn't appear to be hurt. that jap who put him on his seat was huge.

:: WOW!!!... Is this REALLY your ONLY Response to the PERTINENT Contrarian Boxing Points that MANY Posters Raised, Jaws????..... REED::
what point? Pryor has a good chin because he overwhelmed an old, once great fighter? Arguello's power is a myth. 14 rounds of big shots to stop Ray mancini Stopped Bazooka Limon and Chacon on cuts, not by finishing. In 1982, at 140lbs, he's not some bruising puncher. His technique looks great, but he did not carry power up from 126 in a way that would've handled Pryor. Save Arguello and Cervantes (which is debatable) Juan Diaz would be a favorite over everyone else Pryor beat. Aaron took some big shots against Arguello, but so did alot of lesser guys with average chins. He is blisteringly overrated, especially in terms of punch resistance.
pryor took serious leather from dejuan johnson (who was a BIG puncher) and even in his old age getting handled by bobby joe young he was never knocked out. it doesnt take a guy with a 75% KO ratio to be a hard puncher. pryor was absolutely NAILED by arguello and cervantes and johnson and young with shots that would KO 95% of professional fighters unequivocally. and he was never KOed or even badly hurt...i think that in itself is proof of a solid chin. bad balance/unorthodox attacking = lots of balance knockdowns (see Prince Naseem Hamed, younger Manny Pacquiao, AARON PRYOR) bad punch resistance? = being in good position to take shot and crumbling anyways (see Thomas Hearns, Fernando Vargas, Joe Louis)
dsimon writes: Arguello is also overrated now? Jesus if you keep putting your feet in your mouth you will look like munche's the scream guy!!! Keep going junior, whose next Ali? he was overrated too? who else? ::
Wow, you are amazingly off base. This has nothing to do with feelings, it has to do with you not knowing what you are talking about Now you say Arguello was an overrated puncher.... hilarious Never mind that his opponents all seem to think he hit like a freight train But you know better than they do
Ezzard Charles a "solid" Lightheavy?? C'mom Jaws, you're smarter than this. I know you are prone to exaggeration (for and against fighters) when trying to prove a point, but Charles was certainly much more than a "solid" fighter. I hate to say it but that sounds like something Kid D would say.
Valero is slow and doesn't have much of a workrate. He doesn't wail away like a windmill at all, he's just a sloppy puncher, his workrate is average. They are not similar in the slightest. As Neil said, if anything Gamboa is slightly more similar to Pryor.
to stay on the subject, kostya tszyu probably is the most accomplished jr. welterweight ever. i consider him the best, but one could make a case for chavez, pryor or cervantes.
How many guys can boast a record of 19-2 in championship fights over 10 years? He had his short comings, but that's an impressive run by anyone's standards. The one measuring stick I always hate is the "he never beat an elite fighter" line of crap. How do we know that guys like Judah, Pineda, Hurtado, etc don't go on to be elite fighters if not for the Tszyu beatdowns?
Because they didn't take savage beatings, and if they were elite fighters, they would have proved it since. That's one of the worst arguments you've ever come up with Trpl.
Is it that his 2 best wins are over Zab and Sharmba that seals the deal for you, in regards to him being the most accomplished jr welter ever? Or is it because he is half Korean? ::
140 isn't exactly the who's who of boxing. Nobody had TWO championship runs like he did (over the course of almost a decade) and unified the division like he did either. For a guy who had less than 35 fights or so, he had around 20 of those being title fights. Thats impressive in this day and age.
he's only 1/4 korean, but usually that will suffice in order to earn my favoritism. :: tszyu is pronounced 'chu' by koreans.
what was impressive to me was that he was towards the end of his career when he twice defied the odds in the division's most signficant fights against slicker and faster black fighters who were favored to beat him. he's also had one of the best amateur careers ever (when ammys were still relevant). from beginning to end, the guy's had a great BOXING career.
Going purely by numbers it's impressive, but he fought very infrequently, and against sub par opposition. Like Azazel said, when your 2 best wins are against Zab and Sharmba, and you're being called an ATG, something's wrong. Tszyu never tested himself beyond the call of duty. Even Hatton tested himself at 147, he basically came up short on both occasions, but at least he went for it. If 140 wasn't stacked, 147 has had a slew of quality fighters over the years, he should have moved up and fought the big boys.
Marvin Hagler never did and middleweight at his day was not a very stacked division either. Ditto for Hopkins who only moved up when he was old. What is wrong with cleaning up your division and ruling it. Apart if the fighter is question is ugly of course?
Actually I think it IS a legit point. If Tszyu wasn't as great as he was, maybe guys like Hurtado or Judah become great fighters down the road. Getting dominated and stopped by a great 140 champ might have derailed their careers from being much, much better. If you replace Zoo with an average champ at 140 like Roger Mayweather of Vinnie Pazienza from the 80's, maybe Zab Judah doesn't have that career-altering, Dance-inspiring, knock out loss to rebound from. Maybe he then goes on to greatness.
Tszyu could have done a calculated move up in weight like alot of fighters do...beat some crappy champion and then boast of ruling 2 divisions he could have moved up to 147, beat Mayorga or Spinks...then have guys like Mitchell and Hatton move to 147 to fight him, beat them...and it'd be on par with Hopkins move to 175 :atu:
