Arguello was a B-Minus level fighter and Navarette, Boza-Edwards, Escalera, Chacon and Limonwere C Level fighters.

Boza was a good fighter, and most famously was hit so hard by an Arguello body shot that he involuntarily SHAT himself:bears:

indeed! but I would imagine the protective jock and other underwear is what kept it from ... well... becoming obvious to observers... his corner stopped the fight between rounds

Jaws actually did tell me once that Escalera was a C Level fighter (which most likely means he has never seen Escalera fight) while trying to defend his assertion that Arguello went life and death with journeymen and C level fighters.

Arguello once said that all he needed to do was to land 2 or 3 good punches a round in order to win his fights. This may have given the impression he struggled with lesser competition but I look at it as more a case of his knowing his strengths and weaknesses, and fighting in a style that exploited to the max his strengths.

He was good at setting up big shots - fight changing shots. He was not good at chucking and jiving and moving around the ring.

The best example is his fight with Olivares. For much of the fight Olivares was winning rounds with his movement and quick flurries. But ultimately, Arguello, having controlled the pace with his heavy hands, delivered a fight ending blow.

It also explains how he would've lost to a fighter like Marcel - a very durable and mobile fighter who Arguello apparently never caught up with.

The Snake Man was definitley no C-level fighter, he was as tough as nails

Arguello was one of the greats, there are no two ways about it

I wouldn't consider Olivares "lesser opposition", a C Level fighter or a journeyman. Jaws' comments were strictly meant to put down the quality of Arguello's opposition...which doesn't fly because Arguello fought a lot of quality fighters.

You guys just don't understand the fighters have evolved since Arguello's time, a typical guy today would kill Arguello with hardly any effort at all really. :notallthere:

Just watched Frank Tate vs Micheal Olijide: Fought for the vacant IBF Middleweight title, which Hagler previously had. Good fight, and was a great performance by Frank Tate. He really put on a boxing clinic, and beat the crap outta Olijide late. Tate looked like a real talent in this fight. Makes it all the more impressive how easily Nunn took him apart not too long after.

BTW - goddamn Micheal Olijide was an ugly ass nicca! When he and Barkley fought, it might have been the two ugliest muthafuckas in boxing history in the same ring! The only other two possibly uglier in history are Ebo Elder, and Chris Eubank.

Micheal Katsidis TKO 3 over a prime Arguello.

Trinidad vs Whitaker - Pernell was already a shell at this point, but damn, the guy was still crafty and had excellent survivial skills. He made Trinidad miss a couple times too, reminiscent of his old self.

DLH vs Carr - This was Oscar's lead-up to the showdown with Tito. Carr was no great fighter, but as a fairly decent one, he had the misfortune of running into prime Quartey, De La Hoya and Trinidad at the time he was in a position to challenge for the title. If the holders were guys like, say, Gatti and Baldomir, I think Carr's chances would've been better.

    Leo Dorin-Raul Balbi 1

Overshadowed by Ward-Gatti 1 in 2002, this fight IMO had plenty of brawl without a fierce ending, at the end Dorin's face looking like bloody hamburger and Balbi having alligator skin didn't look like he was even in a fight.

Agreed. A champion that defends his title ten times and his reign is ended by a Hall of Fame Legend like Arguello in a bloodbath back-and-forth thriller is definitely not a C-level fighter. Even Arguello himself has mentioned that Escalera deserves to be in the hall of Fame.
