how good was this guy...I looked at his boxrec record and he had like 11 or 12 WBA Jr. Middleweight Title defenses and also he beat the tar outta Winky Wright...was this guy really that good?
He was pretty solid. Beat up some names that turned out to be a hell of alot better than they appeared at the time he took the W's. I enjoyed watching him fight. Whitaker beating him like he did was probably the most impressive performance of his career, IMO.
Even Though he was a Considerably LARGER Man, Vasquez Gave Sweet Pea Whittaker (& REED who was Watching from Home) a Pretty Good SCARE @ a Time when Pernell was Pretty Much UNBEATABLE... REED:hammert:
I saw him in person on the undercard of Julio Cesar Chavez-Sammy Fuentes card. He knocked the shit out of a stiff by the name of Troy Wortham, and it was memorable because the whore that Wortham had bought the night before sat by me after the fight was over. The hooker came late after the fight and said "I met a guy last night named Troy!" I told her he got knocked the fuck out and she said "NO!" and I said ""Yes!" and me and los vatos sitting around me had a great laugh on this puta! True story from Caesars Palace back in the day!
a 21 year old kid named ronald wright went to france & won eight rounds vs vasquez, a virtually unbeaten champ with 50 fights. great fight actually.
That fight made wright rethink his style. He got dropped silly a couple of times. That's when the high guard style was born.
yea, whitaker fought dangerously at times. he still won like 8 or 9 rounds. i don't understand why gil clancy was so disappointed w/ that performance.
that was an awesome fight. winky threw some fluid combinations. vasquez did fuck him up badly in the 12th that secured him the W.
I remember reading in KO Magazine that Wright was wearing new boxing shoes for that fight, and that the shoes were slippery, contributing to the 3 knockdowns counted in the bout.
:bears: Great magazine!!! Vasquez' fists put Winky down...unless of course he was groggy because he slipped and hit his head.
I remember Vasquez being rugged and a bit dirty, but to his credit he clapped for Whitaker when Whitaker took his belt. Too bad him and Terry Norris never fought. Vasquez had clubbing power and a pretty good chin, and I don't know if Norris would have been able to stay away from it for the whole 12 rounds.
Norris at his best would have beaten Vasquez, probably in a similar way he beat Brown in the rematch, but you're right...Vasquez had the bombs, a good chin and his shots tended to come at bad angles if you had the glass temple like Terry did. I don't think Vasquez was dirty, but he sure as hell was rugged, so I agree there.
I agree. If Terry was at his very best, I think he'd have outboxed Vasquez handily. Goddamn ppl act like ANY sonuvabitch in history with a halfway decent punch beats Norris. I'm no Whiskey, but Norris is pretty underrated on boxing forums nowadays.
one couldve been ruled a slip. and wright certainly dropped vasquez legitimately in one of the first few rounds that wasn't scored a knockdown.
