During a ceremony in his honor in Puerto Rico, Miguel Cotto revealed that he suffered a lot after the defeat at the hands (illegally wrapped) of Antonio Margarito. He stated that it was his family the main ones that helped him get through that painful period of his life. He also mentioned that he will give fans "all the big fights you want to see", but also stated that he will not remain more than five in boxing, that he cannot see himself staying fighting beyond five years from now. Later he added that after a well deserved resting period he will meet with Top Rank promoters to discuss his next fight, which could possibly be with Ghana's Joshua Clottey, the IBF welter champion who last Saturday in New York, personally challenged Cotto to fight him. "I am here to stay (as champion). And I'll face anyone they put in front of me."

It's a solid fight/test for Cotto but i just can't get excited to see Clottey fight.

Same here. Clottey is a boring ass fighter. This era's Winky Wright.

Atleast Winky and Clottey are tough enough to defend themselves legally, you got to give them that, they block and parry with thier arms, they dont bend down below belt level and hide behind the length of thier thigh, back, and turned heads.

This is good news! Clottey will be a good test for sure.

Speaking of Cotto, Does Anybody Know if/When HBO is Replaying the Fights from Last Weekend???...

Out of all the elite welters, Clottey is probably the most difficult style for Cotto to deal with. I would prefer Cotto fight Berto and if a deal can't get made with Mosley, then fight Clottey.

    It was on Showtime.

I agree. A Cotto/Berto fight would be much more exciting and attractive.

No, it wasn't on either. It was on an independent Top Rank PPV, so there will be no replay.

PM me for a link to the fights.

I watched the show live. It isn't worth watching, even from a perspective of gauging where Cotto is after the loss.

Cotto vs. Clottey might look like MOsley fighting Winky....Mosley throwing punches Winky catching with his forearms and countering quickly then covering up again.... i woud also prefer Cotto vs. Berto...

Clottey's name is definately in the mix, but it will most likely be Soto-Karass.

Ah. I just assumed it was because they had Jimmy Lennon introducing the fighters. (for Pavlik-Rubio)

I downloaded the fights, didn't watch them on tv live.

Agreed with steve_dave though, there isn't really much worth watching. It was just both guys taking their time dismantling over matched opponents.

rather Clottey than Cintron........as others have said, Berto would be more exciting, but Clottey probably offers a stiffer test

.....Cotto-Hatton/Pacquaio is the bigger fight down the road

I think Cintron or Clottey have a real shot at beating Cotto. Clottey is durable as hell and Cintron can hit and would enjoy a considerable height advantage.

It's nothing close to Margarito's infraction, but Cotto skins his gloves big time. Has anyone noticed how high he tapes them? If I were in the opposing camp I'd defintely not stand for that shit.

It seems like everyone is doing that these days. Cotto moreso than others.

The only guy mentioned here that I think would give Cotto any trouble is Cintron. Obviously, he's got nothing on Miguel's boxing ability, but Cintron is a big guy and can crack. Cotto would kill Berto though, I see nothing Berto could possibly do to beat Cotto. I think Berto might win a couple of early rounds but will slow down after Miguel beats his body up for a while. Clottey is tough but limited and he tends to really slow down late. Cotto tends to slow a bit late too but he'd have more than enough to finish stronger than Clottey. I think Clottey is the easiest fight of the bunch for Cotto.

I agree that Berto has no chance. But given his chin, I'd make him a much easier opponent for Cotto than Clottey.

Clottey tires but he knows how to survive in the face of his fatigue. If he can last 12 rounds against Mr. brick-hands, I'm pretty sure he'd in the very least last the distance against Cotto, if not win.

Berto I can't see lasting past the 5th round, let alone winning.

Basically, anyone who's not six feet who Cotto can back up he's going to beat IMO.

Any fighter who is able to back Cotto up has a chance. Clottey with his hands-up style and durability may very well manage that.

And like I said, although I can't imagine Cintron backing Cotto up, his height, reach and punching power could be a big factor. Let's not forget that his last opponent was not only a south-paw, but was also as tall if not taller than Cintron. I think it was these two factors that accounted for Cintron's poor performance.

Cotto/Cintron would be a big event I would think since they're both Puerto Rican. But as far as I know, Clottey is promoted by Arum so that fight is probably easier to arrange.

I'm still hoping there's a Cotto/Margarito rematch. It will be interesting to see how it plays out assuming that Margarito is without his bricks.

A Mosley rematch would be worth watching but I think Mosley's first attempt was about as best as he can do. I thought he might have won that fight. But I don't see him out-doing himself if there's a rematch.

Cintron looking bad was also due to Martinez using a Sergio Mora style. That was hidious to watch. He basically ran for half the fight.

Cotto would do no such thing. He'd be there to be hit.

Out of everyone at 147, I give Mosley the best chance to beat Cotto. That to me would be a toss up at this point. The rest, you have to favor Cotto.

Also Clottey AND Margarito were both injured in their fight. It's hard to base anything off that fight really.

Yeah Martinez fights like even more spastic version of Mora. The guys style is garbage and his Dragon ball-z hairdo is unbeleivably annoying.

  25. Mitchell Kane

Mitchell Kane WBC Silver Diamond Emeritus Champ

Cotto would be there to be hit?

What is this based on? The fact that Margarito could hit him?

Cintron isn't great at cutting off the ring or closing the gap, and he isn't very good with short/intermediate punches. His technique, and therefore his accuracy, is just very poor.

What about this fella, Antonio Margarito?

  27. *Z*

*Z* WBC Silver Diamond Emeritus Champ

In comparison to Sergio Martinez-Mora that is.

Cotto doesn't have bad defense, it's not exactly great either though. He's aggressive, he comes forward. He's going to be in range more than he's not.

  28. *Z*

We can address that in about 1 year.

  29. *Z*

Ah what the hell, I'm bite. I've got Margarito winning in a rematch too.

  30. Mitchell Kane

Mitchell Kane WBC Silver Diamond Emeritus Champ

Cotto can move enough so that he's not a stationary target, which is basically what Cintron needs. He's not great defensively, for sure, but against someone like Cintron he should be able to use his legs to keep a manageable distance and fight more on his terms...which is pretty much what Martinez does when he fights.

Cintron's height/reach will pose an obstacle, as will some of the odd angles he punches at, but that could just make Cotto more apprehensive and cautious, not trade more.
