two big name players from one of the two Light heavyweight golden ages (1940-1950 and 1975-1984) ...

John Conteh-- wonderfully athletic Brit champion with excellent boxing skills, fast and fairly heavy hands... battered Len Hutchins, lost a very suspect decision to Mate Parlov, Used a second half display of great skill and aggression to beat tough Jorge Ahumada, at times battered Matthew Saad Muhammad before coming apart at the seams in the 15th, two victories over the game Chris Finnegan... inexplicably struggled with the ordinary Jesse Burnett

James Scott-- the famous Rahway Prison resident, aggressive and busy fighter who outworked opponents... upset Eddie Mustafa Muhammad (nee Gregory) and Yaqui Lopez, stopped tough Richie Kates... struggled mightily with tough Jerry Martin, rising from two knockdowns to lose a close decision, outmuscled by Dwight Qawi in his last pro fight

for the sake of realism, lets just assume this takes place at Rahway, because that is where it would have taken place given Scott's obvious lack of choice in the matter.

Let's call it a 12 rounder... who do you think wins it?

It's a very good matchup. From what I've seen of Conteh he could probably win if his hands hold up. But that's a big if.

Sorry if its not Michael Spinks or Bob Foster, no one here seems to know any other Lightheavyweight.

Your knowledge of the sport was just a waste on this topic...
    Too bad though.
    Good matchup.
But to be said on my own part, I can't recall many fights so therefore have to refrain from my judgement on this topic.

I haven't seen a whole lot of Conteh, so I am a little hesitant. But if I had to make a pick with both fighters being at their peaks, I would go with Conteh. He seems to be the better all around fighter, where Scott was more of a tough guy pressure fighter type.

Conteh faced a lot of good fighters, including an even better and tougher fighter than Scott in Saad Muhammed, so I don't see him being intimidated by Scott...who I think was a bit more famous than he really deserved to be due to his fighting his fights in Rahway.

I watched both these guys back then and I find it hard to predict an outcome due to the different opposition they faced. I was big on Scott and if Conteh had to fight in Rahway I'd favor Scott. However Conteh had good boxing ability and outside the prison might able to box well enough to take it.
Still overall on their best night Scott was the more hungry, determined fighter and it would be hard to pick against him.

I kind of feel the same way. Conteh's boxing ability and combination punching would be a good deterrent to Scott's pressure

    Non-Title Fight

The Title fights back when these guys were on top was 15 rounds, not 12.

Therefore, I am assuming this is a Non-Title fight for 12 rounds.

Conteh, as mentioned before had a very bad right hand, and Scotty was a bull unleashed.

Very difficult to predict, but in a Non-Title fight over 12, I feel that John would have butted the onrushing Scott to a TKO defeat in about 6 or 7 in a brawl where the rulebook was thrown out the window, as Conteh loved it down and dirty.

John would lace, hit low, hit after the bell, and butt the shit out of a guy billygoat style, and IMO would just outman Scott in a streetfight.

that was my intention, and that is why i made it 12 rounds instead of 15, and because Scott never fought in a title fight
