Don't know anything about Mizugaki. He is a fill in for the injured Brian Bowles. Nevertheless, it will be good to see Torres again. I really like Fabiano and hope they televise that fight. You and I should both learn from our mistakes and remember these shows always run long. Record the following program as well.
He got his goods kicked pretty good for 3 rounds by that late replacement. Was down 2-1 after three rounds and had a nasty gash over his eye. To his credit he pulled it out thanks to his incredible stamina and chin, but in the two fights I have seen on him that is what he needed to win more than anything else. The japanese dude made a huge tactical error, too. He basically won the fight in the middle of the ring with his superior striking, but lost it against the ropes in the last two rounds. At that stage he could easily have won leaning against the cage by punching, elbowing and headbutting at that cut during clinches. If his corner told him to attack the gash Torres would have looked like Frank Ribery in no time.
I agree that he should have kept it in the middle instead of against the cage, but something tells me Torres had more to do with keeping it against the cage than Mizugaki's "tactical error" Great fight, it was good to see the champ pushed.
Probably in the 4th and 5th round, at that point he should have used every legal and illegal tactic during the clinches to open that gash and make Torres bleed like a pig. I think he could have forced a cut stoppage that way.
I didn't thnk Torres was ever behind in the fight unless you gave Takeya Mizugaki the first round. The first couple of rounds were close, but Torres was getting stronger as the fight went on. I thought he won 4-1 in rounds. There really wasn't a single round that Takeya won clearly. Torres did have some clear cut rounds. Another exciting fight by Torres who seems like he just cannot be in a boring fight.
Who are you? Frank Mir? Mizugaki CLEARLY won the first round. Maybe there is an argument Torres won the 3rd round, when Mizugaki opened Grand Canyon on Torres forehead, but MOST experts/fans had the fight 2-1 Mizugaki after three rounds, and 3-2 Torres in the end.
Except only 1 official judge scored it 3-2 and two of them scored it 4-1. I'm not saying the guy got dominated, I'm saying the round or rounds he did win were not real clear. How dare you compare me to Frank Mir! I'm 200 times the poster he would be on here! ::
I scored it 4-1 for Torres, but I wouldn't argue with someone who said 3-2 for Torres. Z is right some of the rounds were close. If Torres has a weakpoint, its his takedowns.
I gave Torres every round except the first. He just did so much more work. The dude is an animal. He's the champ and he was constantly taking the fight to Mizugaki. Mizugaki was competitive in every round but Torres just kept doing more. The elbows, knees and shoulders against the cage won the fight for Torres in my opinion. Another FOY candidate for Torres. Anyone else wanna see Torres and Benavidez next?
I would love to see it, but it sounds like Bowles(sp?) is next in line. Torres will take him out early.
I agree that Torres' weakness is his takedowns. He needs to work on that. If he was able to take Mizugaki down, it would have been over early. He wanted nothing to do with Torres on the ground. He avoided the ground like the plague!
I just remembered something funny that Frank Mir said during the WEC broadcast. I forget which fight was going on at the time but one guy went for a leg lock and Mir said something to the effect of "Yeah it would suck to be beating a guy up bad only to get caught in a leg lock and lose" Kind of ironic Mir would say somethng like that. I wish I could find it, it thought it was funny.
He said that during the first televised fight. The Rafael Assuncao vs. Jameel Massouh fight. I immediately thought "Frank certainly knows what he's talking about with that one." Hilarious.
I bet he wished he could take that back after he said it. It's almost like he admitted he got lucky. ::
