thanks artie: too bad there's no replay of it on a similar note here's Lamotta's knockdown http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ta3GFGc250E
Yeah bullshit KD. But I do agree that he was stunned a bit in that 2nd round, recovered quite nice though.
Seemed more of an off balanced shot...looked to me to hit the glove a bit more, and Hagler is clearly not hurt, and also didn't think it was a kd. Though I wish there was a replay.
Hagler was clearly bothered ALOT in the Roldan fight. If thats what this video is, he was legitimately hurt, IMO.
i dunno...he wasn't off balance before the punch was thrown, he slipped off the end of of a punch and it got ruled a knockdown.....good timing....happens all the time
Bullshit KD in my opinion, Hagler clearly looked like he slipped, and it just happened to be when Roldan was throwing a punch BUT, he was definitley troubled by Roldan's bullish strength and power Hagler's image as a fighter has been revised mroe than anyone I can recently recall... thanks to his physical appearance (goatee, bald head, permanent scowl) and his KO of Hearns, Hagler is often depicted as this big brutal middleweight who outmuscled everybody Nothing could be further from the truth, Hagler was not a big middlewieght at all and was outmuscled and pushed back by several fighters (Roldan, Hamsho, Antuofermo among them... not to mention Willie "The Worm" Monroe in their first fight) and relied far more on his refined skills as a boxer and his accuracy as a puncher to beat guys down... When one watches Hagler, one sees a defensively careful fighter who used a terrific jab and excellent counterpunching skills to chop guys up slowly but steadily... This is not to say he isnt one of the greatest middlewieghts, because he definitley is, but he was great in a different style than he is commonly remembered... he was a terrific boxer, a good puncher and had a tremendous chin but he was no big, strong brawler
Juan D. Roldan was a bum and almost had Hagler out of there on several occasions. Was Roldan ever a champion? I don't remember, but I'm pretty sure he got KO'd everytime he stepped it up. Tito was a world class fighter with legendary power, he would've smoked the Hagler who fought Roldan.
Just watched that clip and agree the KD was bullshit mainly because it appeared to be from an illegal downward blow to the back of the head after Hagler ducked, which in turn pushed him straight down towards the canvas. However, I must have missed the parts where Hagler was stunned, much less hurt by any of Roldan's punches. I'd like to know you guys definition of the word hurt, because I did see where Roldan hit Hagler with some hard punches, but Hagler went right back to work immediately. I also agree Roldan's strength and aggressiveness was a slight bother to Hagler, but only from a physical standpoint. Mentally it didn't seem to bother Hagler at all as he seemed to be totally confident and totally in control the whole time.
Yeah, Hagler looked vulnerable and pretty hittable in this fight. Usually, Hagler had good parrying skills, and slipped shots well. But Roldan, with slow hands, was tagging him with consistency. The "Hagler was a brawler" myth is a pet peeve of mine. He was a boxer-puncher for most of his career. People acting like Hagler was always some pressuring mauler because of the Hearns fight is like people watching Mayweather-Judah and coming to the conclusion that Mayweather was generally a guy who came forward, or watching Leonard-Duran 2 (or Hagler) and thinking that Ray was always someone who retreated and danced on his toes. I would also like to add that the decision loss to Bobby Watts was bullshit.
Actually Hagler did a very good job of blocking, slipping and parrying most of Roldan's shots while also keeping just outside of the guys punch zone in that clip. Sure he got hit occasionally but who doesn't in a boxing match? For a guy who never saw many of Hagler's fights I actually came away thinking "wow Hagler was a pretty knowledgable boxer who had very good defense." Are you people watching the same clip that I did? :dunno:
