    Gran Torino 8/10

Excellent film. It starts a bit slowly and at first it seems Eastwood falls in the trap most old guys too and explains things too much. However the dialogue is great throughout and Eastwood's character is great. Eastwood also acts better than perhaps ever along with Unforgiven. The movie makes it moral very clear but the ending is a good one and that saves the movie from being too preaching. A must film if you have ever been a fan of Dirty Harries

    PUNISHER 2 WAR ZONE

    SCORE: 5.5/10

PREMISE: Frank is back to continue his vegence against the mob. This time he's going up against jigsaw not to mention a rogue cop hell bent on getting even with him, but is this cop really a foe, or is he a friend?

CRITIQUE: Typical one man army against many flick here. I'm not a big fan of these types of movies but after reading some reviews I was intrigued. Just as informed, the plot, and acting were subpar but the action is what made this good. The acting was over the top funny at times and Punisher lived up to his unstoppable badass rep from the comic.

Still though, this felt more like a big action B movie with the Punisher character thrust into it, rather than what it should have been, a movie about the Punisher with action installed around a well worked plot. This doesn't do Marvel movies justice, but is still a decent flick for mindless killing and the end was nice.

THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL

    SCORE: 6.5/10

    PREMISE:
An alien comes to earth to find out if mankind needs to be exterminated due to the slow polluting man made destruction of the planet that we are doing. He has a big ass robot body guard that is indestructible with him. After determing that mankind does need to be destroyed he teams up with a woman and her son, who try to convince him that mankind is worth saving. Will they succeed in changing his mind?

CRITIQUE: Either people tend to be overly critical of sci fi movies or I just have a special place for them in my heart because this movie wasn't nearly as bad as everyone has made out. It wasn't the most action packed movie but it wasn't super slow either. I think it showed good development of the characters. I especially liked the robot body guard and the technology that was used to wipe out the humans. I think this movie falls more into a drama sci fi than an action one and maybe that's why I liked it so much and most people didn't because I love sci fi and I love dramas.

i ought to open my eyes a bit more: didn't even know about this new genre of british social commentary-horror that's emerged over the past few years. eden lake, the children, donkey punch, mum & dad, hush; each a projection of 21st century britain's anxieties - teen anti-social behaviour, child violence, domestic torture, human trafficking, holiday sexual excess. the cathartic vomit brought up from the depths of sick, broken britain...

Have you watched the original THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL? Because the original 1952 classic is still a damn great film even if it is in black & white with primitive SPFX. And it shits over this abomination. A mostly forgettable film that should never had been made in the first place.

YES MAN Not among Jim Carrey's funniest films, but it is a pretty good movie and had few hilarious scenes. Very predictable though. 7/10

BEDTIME STORIES If you have seen the trailers you have seen pretty much the best of it. Adam Sandler plays his usual self in his first Disney family film. An okay movie that even my children couldn't watch entirely. 7/10

THE WOLFMAN Irewatched the original 1940 Lon Chaney Jr classic just to prepare for the upcoming remake with Benicio Del Toro later this year. Oh, boy my memories of it weren't wrong. When I watched it for the first time as a child I didn't thought much of it. As the years passed I thought maybe I was too immature to appreciate it. Well, it is still a very mediocre film. I know that at the time the character and the make up were great and it made a lot of money and is considered a classic. But honestly this is a failed film. It fails to convince you that midget size Claude Rains could be be towering tall Lon Chaney Jr. father. Chaney was a very limited actor (unlike his legendary dad), his acting makes you cringe. The movie moves at snail pace. The wolfman doesn't show up until half through the film. The first transformation is ridiculous: Talbot is sitting on a chair with certain color pants and an undershirt when he turns into werewolf. Next scene the wolfman is seen roaming the countryside wearing an entirely different clothing! That means that after he turned wolf he went ahead and changed clothes?!! :dunno: Like that there are many scenes that really don't make any sense. An overrated classic. The new film could be head and shoulders better, but you never know with today's remakes (see THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL or Mary Shelley's FRANKENSTEIN). 4/10

THE DUCHESS This was a pleasant surprise. I avoided it for a while since I can't stand Kiera Knightley. Always thought she was just a pretty face with not enough acting chops to handle a starring role in a costume period drama. Well, I was wrong. She did an Oscar winning performance in this story about an aristocrat girl who enters a family arranged marriage to this older duke (Ralph Fiennes in a memorable hateful cold character) who demands from her two things: a male heir and unconditional devotion. Well he basically treats her with much less care than he does to his pedigree dogs. In fact he doesn't make love to her: he just rapes her and walks away. She gets bored and resentful as he commits adultery with other women and she can't even complain about it since he is the lord of the house. She gives birth to girls much to the duke's resentment and after he seduces her best friend she decides that the younger guy and possible future prime minister is yummy enough to find carnal pleasure and maybe love. Based on a true story this is a powerful drama about unhappy marriage, love, hate, loss and the tragic consequences of adultery. Good movie. 8/10

JCVD I haven't watched a Jean Claude Van Damme movie in over a decade. I saw the trailer of this one which was heralded as a drama-comedy in which Van Damme plays himself and was curious about it so I rented it. Well the best thing about it was the initial one long shot action sequence which was just the shooting of one fictional film. The rest of the film with him being held hostage with other people in a building was boring and uninteresting. The english dubbing was atrocious. Couldn't finish watching it. 3/10

How do you guys rate the x-men movies? For some reason I am excited about the Wolverine movie, and might watch the three X-Men movies before I watch that one.

Great movie and in a way as far as doomsday movies go this was more believable.

i caught some of it on a plane flight about a year ago, and thought it looked pretty turgid. but after hearing the recommendations i watched it in full yesterday. it definitely isn't a slick, smooth movie experience, and plenty of things are undeveloped. the mechanics of the storytelling are clunky, but the direction, and the movie's ambition and conviction in dealing with such important issues (the oppression of the dispossessed, and the need for hope in a broken world nonetheless) just had to be admired, imo.

and the scenes between owen and moore, and between caine and his catatonic wife, just plain worked.

Gatti, fuck the reviews, Wolverine is no worse than Iron Man and these so-called critics were giving Iron Man good reviews last year.....well worth the $6 osfan paid to spend 2 hours for it.

7/10. I found it quite enjoyable. Alot of people pissing and moaning over how another character is treated in this rather than the movie itself. Seeing as I couldn't give two shits about the other character, I have to say this was good. Better than Xmen 3 for sure.

8/10. Liked it. Like the new direction and the twist. Plausible job on the psuedo reboot. The new cast did a great job and all in all, I'm interested to see more from this series.

No comments since I have not watched WOLVERINE yet, but people who have watched it and liked X-Men told me it was just so-so. I'll judge for myself soon.

STAR TREK I already posted my review on the other thread. For once trust the critics: this is a great, great film. A rollercoaster ride since the opening sequence. One of the best films you'll ever watch (and if not, at least THE best movie of the summer!) All the previous TREK films pale in comparison. Go watch it and take some friends with you. You'll have a good time. 10/10

THE SPIRIT Awful, awful film. It looks as gorgeous as SIN CITY and Frank Miller co-directed SIN CITY. But that is where the comparison ends. This is a talking comicbook which is not good. All the characters are one dimensional, flat and uninteresting. The plot moves at snail pace and still you don't get much a clue what's going not because is complicated, but because the whole thing feels disjointed. The only positive thing about it: We get to see again Eva Mendes magnificent gorgeous naked ass for a brief moment. But still her ass doesn't save this turkey. Eva Mendes ass = 10+ . the movie = 2/10

Seabiscuit. Got hold of this after reading the excellent book. My word, this is an absolute shocker of a movie. It is a floating turd. They've managed to remove any storyline from it, and any sense of drama about any of the events.

    To summarise:

    Seabiscuit (film) - utter shiite.
    Seabiscuit (book) - utterly superb.

    fucking terrible

the CGI in this movie was horrific, hanzy could have done a better job with photoshop

the scene in the bathroom where logan is checking out his claws is terrible

the end where he gets shot and loses his memory makes no sense whatsoever

This is the poster boy of Box Office Disaster of 2009, the movie is actually not that bad. The 3D effect is just so-so though, too bad in the next 4 months there will be at least 5 3D movies in the lineup, making this one easily ignored by the public.
