Sanchez's favorite thing in the world was for fighters to come right at him so he could pick them apart with jabs and those ridiculously accurate straight right hands... but he would have his hands full here because of Pacquiao's speed. Pac-Man definitley wins some rounds here, but Sanchez is too tough to be rattled by his power and too skilled to be overwhelmed by his speed... A competetive and entertaining fight but Pac's style is all wrong for Sal Sanchez... Sanchez by unanimous decision in a good one
Agreed, but in a 15 rounder I am thinkin a 13-14 round stoppage for Sanchez... I think Pacman wins alot of rounds and makes it vcery competitive, but I think he can stand up to Pacman's power, what lost JMM the fights with him was the fact that he could be hurt by Pacman...and often...keepin him from comin back with strong counters at all times... Sanchez's straight rands would land all night he would then later pick him apart. But no walk in the park whatsoever.
I don't know. I think Pacquiao's unorthodox attack, the angles he gives, and his willingness to trade would make this a pick-em fight. And while Sanchez may prefer fighters who come at him, Pacquiao himself prefers and performs much better when he's allowed to come forward. So in that sense they play into each other's hands. I also don't think Sanchez was quite as quick as JMM. But as people have said, he did have a seemingly iron chin that would surely affect the complexion of this fight. But Sanchez, though he won a lot of fights against good competition, struggled mightily with opponents that you'd have to consider infererior to Pacquiao. He went tooth and nail for example with Ruben Castillo, Laporte, Nelson and Cowdwell. With the exception of Nelson, all of these fighters not only went the distance with Sanchez, but also won a considerable number of rounds against him. It's difficult to pick a winner here because Sanchez never faced anyone who fought remotely with the style that Pacquiao has. On the other hand, you could make the case that Pacquiao has fought and overcome styles similar to that of Sanchez's, although I make no claim that any of his victories came against any fighters that were as good and as durable as Sanchez, and certaintly none who were better.
Actually a good post, the only thing I would pick apart is the arguement about Sanchez's opposition and those who gave him trouble, cuz there are many fighters that weren't in the same class as Sanchez that gave Pacman quite a bit of trouble. And lesser fighters with less of a chin and power have put Pacman down as well, and hurt him. Not to say any of that is extremely valid...but if you put up that arguement about Sanchez I could definately use that against Pacman.
Excellent post. It's an interesting fight, that's for sure. I too have to lean towards Sanchez by decision though.
Nelson proved his quality by giving Sanchez the fight that he did. The number of fights he had was immaterial. Evander Holyfield won his first title in his 12th fight. I don't know that Pacquiao does much (if any) better than Nelson did against Sanchez. Sanchez by late TKO or unanimous decision.
I also give the edge to Sanchez but what a fight this would be. No matter who won, a rematch would have been demanded.
I remember this fight came up somewhere else (BF) in like 2003 or 2004. I was the only one who made a case for why Pacquiao losing wasn't a forgone conclusion. The board reacted like I said "Taco's taste ick". Not looking so silly 4-5 years later.
you'rensaying a more experienced Nelson would not have made it even harder on Sanchez? also, Sanchex was much slowe than Pacquiao is and much less mobile, not to mention that he is a southpaw.
Pacquiao could have stopped Sanchez. Sal's often went for large portions of a fight half asleep, not worrying about defense, or moving his head. His willingness to accept punishment could be a catistrophic mistake against someone quicker and stronger than he.
Care to say why? Or is it just cuz Pacman is your favorite fighter and nothing more? Sanchez had one of the greatest chins in boxing followed by one of the best right hands and some of the best technical skills that there ever was.... And somehow...he gets stopped...
Pacquiao is faster and i guess better than Marquez...but in 2 fight and 24 rounds he could not beat him decisively. Sanchez is better than Marquez....Morales...and MAB...

Marquez is better...he isn't faster nor have the chin or the punching power of Pacman...thats the difference... But Marquez definately has the better arsenal and skills, probably one of the best of all time. Sorry just needed to say it. And as far as Pacman being better and faster than Sanchez....oh yes, cuz that worked out so well for him against Morales in the first fight right? And I agree with Cdogg, I doubt Alabama man has even seen anything more than a couple of highlights from Sanchez.
Bama is no fool. He's trolling you guys. The only fools here are the ones that discount Manny's chances. He's a greater and better fighter than Sanchez ever was. There is absolutely no doubt about it. Styles can be an issue for Manny, but to act like he couldn't stop Sanchez, or even beat him is hilarious. Sanchez had a great chin but he never saw anything like Pacquiao. Morales had some beard too and he probably doesn't remember his fights with Manny.
Morales beat his ass the first time around...and then he lost to Raheem, everyone saw the decline with Morales except the Pacman nuthuggers...and Erik was still very competitive in that fight until the later rounds... And Sanchez was better than Erik was...Pacman is a GREAT fighter...but I'm not quite sure he beats Sanchez...not yet.
Ok now I sound like a hater...he didn't beat his ass but did give him a boxing lesson in most of those rounds and won a clear decision...
