From the BBC, video on the link too. 'Option' in the title can be a bit misleading....it is not 'option' in the contractual sense

British boxer David Haye is targeting a September showdown with WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko. Haye had been due to meet Vitali's brother, IBF and WBO champion Wladimir, on 20 June but suffered a back injury which led to the fight being cancelled.
Wladimir will instead meet the joint WBA champion Ruslan Chagaev in Germany, leaving Haye to pursue other options.
"David's looking to fight in September. If Vitali wants to fight he would be up for it," said his manager Adam Booth.
<!-- E SF -->Haye picked up the injury last week while training at his Cyprus training camp and returned to the UK to have "intensive physiotherapy" on Saturday.

He insisted he would be ready to fight Wladimir Klitschko on 11 July, three weeks after the original date, and when the fight was called off Haye said he was "gutted" and "devastated".
Booth said they had tried everything to get the 28-year-old fit for the fight, which would have been a 60,000 sell out at German football club Schalke 04's Veltins Arena.
"He picked up the injury last Tuesday shadow boxing," said Booth, who is also Haye's trainer.
"It's an injury he had when he was a 16-year-old amateur, and it's come back.
"He tried painkillers, anti-inflammatories, tried everything he could. But he's struggling to sit down, can't pick things up, struggling to get in and out of the car.
"He's had treatment since. He goes into hospital on Tuesday for final treatment and will have eight days rest and then will be back in full training in 14 days from now."
Booth also denied the fight's cancellation had anything to do with the fact that sports broadcaster Setanta, who would have screened the fight, is struggling financially.
The postponement left thousands of British fans who had bought tickets for the fight disappointed, but Booth said they could get refunds if they contacted the agents they bought their tickets through.
Haye, the former undisputed cruiserweight king, was hoping to become Britain's first heavyweight world champion since Lennox Lewis retired in 2003.
Vitali Klitschko has only lost two fights, first when he was forced to retire with a shoulder injury against Chris Byrd in 2000 and the second when he was stopped on cuts by Lewis in 2003.

Haye himself has admitted to being distraught at missing out on the fight.
"It's the worst few days of my life," Haye told BBC Sport.
"My whole life has always been about becoming heavyweight champion of the world, and I've been denied that opportunity.
"I'm absolutely gutted. It was the biggest selling indoor fight in history. It doesn't get any worse than this.
"I've had back problems in the past that were manageable, but last Tuesday I did some shadow boxing and after throwing a right hook my whole back cracked and I couldn't move. It's sickening."
The 28-year-old now plans to return to action in September and hopes an announcement on an opponent will be made by Booth in the next couple of weeks.
"Adam will be beating the drum now to try and find an opponent and in an ideal world it will be for a world title," added Haye.
"All I can do is get focused on getting fit and fingers crossed in the next couple of weeks we will know who and where I will be fighting next."

    hard to inmagine.

But I still won't lable Haye a punk. I just can't inmagine him going through all the bullshit since last year to make this fight happen and moving up in weight just to pull out.

    It just doesn't make sense.

It could be possible that David has a serious problem that we do not know about. I'm not believing for one second that he is faking injury. Like Latin said not after everything he did to secure this fight.

IMO a Vitali fight will be more entertaining for the fans - I for one hope he gets this fight.

Maybe he just faked it because of the shit with Setanta.

The rumor is that Haye faked it because his purse would've come from Setanta and they're about to go under.

Thing is, Haye might finish the fight standing now, but his chance of beating Vitali is even less than it would've been for Wlad. At least Wlad was chinny. Vitali will absolutely dominate Haye.

Let me ask you this? How do you injure your back from getting punched? It actually makes perfect sense that a back injury could flare up from shadow boxing.

A Back Injury is MORE Likely to Happen in SPARRING, MITTWORK or HEAVYBAG Work, where U're Actually Throwing "HAYEmakers"...U DON'T Really Throw those Heavy, Back Twisting Shots During Shadowboxing...

As for GETTING Punched, a Consistently STIFF Jab can Eventually Affect an Opponent's Back...

Still, I have no problem understanding how someone could pull a muscle in their back while shadow-boxing.

In my mind, shadow-boxing too hard can strain your back mucles more than if you're hitting pads or a bag because you have to use muscles not only to throw the punch, but to stop it too. This obviously isn't the case when you're hitting a bag where you're using your muscles only to throw the punch. The bag absorbs the punch - there's no effort required by the fighter to stop the punch.

REED, it says in the article that Haye has had back problems in the past. It's probably a reoccuring injury. It doesn't take much to hurt your back if it's not 100%.

so you don't understand how a previous injury can be irritated by shadow-boxing? think about it. depending on how hard you're throwing, i can get more winded shadow-boxing than hitting pads or a bag. again, it's the fighter's having to use force to stop their punches in addition to throwing them that can put them at risk for an injury. it seems like it would be a rare event - i agree. but it sounds like Haye had had previous problems with his back making the story more believable.

plus, if he really is willing to fight Vitali, which we all know is a harder fight than Wlad, what are you suggesting?

not to mention, there's no bigger pay-day in the heavy-weight division than fighting Wlad. there's a huge pie whenever he fights. very few heavyweights would pass on the opportunity to fight Wlad just because as far as opponents, there's no bigger payday.

I was about to say, if Haye's hurting his back from shadow-boxing, what's a Klitschko jab gonna do to it? It might sound like Mosley-DLH I in his corner between rounds.

I'm not sure what's more surprising, that Haye may hurt his back shadow-boxing, or that he actually said so publicly.

This may be an even better story than when reports came out that Sammy Sosa injuring his back from sneezing.

    At least shadow-boxing is voluntary.

WTF are you talking about? the guy leaves cruiserweight and in his second fight since moving up chases down both Klitchkoe brothers. He gets injured then immediately chases a rescheduling and failing that tries to get the other (tougher) brother for a couple months later. No spine? the guy has the biggest pair in the entire sport and if it has a heavyweight division to speak of in 5 years it'll be down to him. He got injured these things happen. :flip:

british fighters can make easy money fighting bouncers in bingo halls. haye blitzed maccarinelli in a lucrative british unification fight, and instead of milking it - a la slappy, hatton, fraudley, khan't, and a thousand other british boxers - he chased down the heavyweight champ for a face-to-face confrontation. "spineless", "chicken", ... they just don't apply. not to his fighting style, his matchmaking, or his attitude in general.

the setanta story on the other hand, maybe... haye is after all a promoter, and so a shrewd guy. if he realised he was going to risk his box-office power and not get paid for it, it wouldn't be surprising if that caused him to pull out. there's not a boxer in history who'd fight wladimir klitschko for free.

the casual fan - who makes up the majority of the money in boxing - would hold a grudge if they heard he was just pulling out for money. they're more likely to forgive haye and buy his next fight if they just hear he's injured.

i don't know how likely this angle is. but the journalists seem to be skeptical about the injury, and haye was not good at deflecting the accusations. for a man who's usually so verbally proactive, he was somewhat sheepish. and it seems a heck of a coincidence - haye pulls out, then about a week later the bombshell drops that his paymaster is going bust.

I find it laughable that you guys are saying Haye has willingly pulled out of this fight.

If anything Haye shoots from the hip - If Setanta is going under and Haye was not getting paid. You'd get your bottom dollar the Haymaker would let us all know about it.
