Unfortunuately, this is gonna hurt MMA a lot and shows, as I have believe for a while, that the striking in it is really poor and that the talent pool is very very shallow. Still, we shouldn't look at this as anything other than a fluke, let's not kid ourselves into thinking it's anything more than Merce caughting Sylvia with a big shot

"I'm not going to be kicking," Mercer said. "I'm going to wear shoes and all that. I want him to know straight up where I'm coming from. I am a boxer, I'm not a MMA fighter."

"This is my world," Sylvia said. "He was going to pull out all the stops in boxing, all the little dirty tricks he has. He's been doing this for 25 years. He was going to come in and try to hurt me. Now I'm going to teach him a lesson."

i dunno, but he beat Sylvia quicker than Fedor did....so draw your own conclusions from that

If anyone still needed proof that Sylvia was done, here it is. The same Mercer that was choked out with ease by Kimbo, and was KO'd in seconds by Remy Bojansky, just put him to sleep.

Maybe it's the curse of Fedor. I guess we'll see Barnett get KO'd within 10 seconds in his first fight after getting his ass whooped by Fedor.

i just think that any fighter can lose if they come in so out of shape....he came in aboout 40lbs bigger than he did against Fedor

You didn't say this BEFORE the fight so shut the f*ck up, TFK. Nobody ever said Tim was done before this fight. It's just a travesty that a 2 time UFC heavyweight champion and a guy once billed as a 'good striker' by UFC standards got stretched from 1 punch by a way shot over the hill retiree like Mercer.

  9. TFK

Nobody had to say it. He got dominated by Couture, he lost to Nog, and he got destroyed by Fedor. What really needed to be said?

You make it seem like it's surprising. Fedor is a whole other beast. At least Tim gave Noguira a hellacious beating before succumbing. We could almost say that Tim is the man who turned Nog into a shot fighter. Nog hasn't been the same since that fight, he's regressed in every way...basically looks and moves like a zombie.
The fact is, Tim despite his weight, should not have been wiped out so quicky against a retiree boxer. Tim's taken punches before from many heavyweights including Arlovski, Couture, Fedor, Ricco, etc. But he was never knocked clean out at any time.
Anyway, did you notice something funny in the video? When Mercer nailed him with the right hand, he immediately went for Tim's left leg for a takedown and jumped on top to do some G n P.
Mercer is learning MMA on the job it seems.

Just the fact that Sylvia weighed 310 lbs for this fight tells you he's done. He obviously just doesn't care enough to even get into shape. He couldn't have done any kind of serious training and come in at that weight.

Sylvia is just another one of the 'Old Guard' of fighters like Liddell, Hughes, Cro-Cop, etc, that the sport is passing by. MMA is constantly evolving, and the fighters of yesterday just aren't good enough to compete with the more well rounded fighters of today.

I don't think Sylvia is done, maybe a little over the hill but not by much, he just came overconfident and got caught, I would still like to see him fight Buentello ( who I think he beats ) even thought it's pretty much a given this fight won't happen as he will be put on suspension

Yes, 50 year old Ray Mercer's skill level is too evolved for a 2 time UFC champion I noticed.
Come on TFK, read what you write before you post it. Tim is a young dude and lost to a f*cking 50 year old shell of a boxer from 1 punch to the head.:dunno:
Even at 310lbs, he didn't forget to keep his hands up and guard his face or throw a punch. And what's hilarious to me is that I was going at it with FourHooks 2 years ago leading up to Tim/Couture when he was going on and on about Tim being one of the UFC's most dangerous strikers.
And you had Joe Rogan calling Tim a phenomenal striker.
Tim isn't a 40 year old hanging on, slurring his speech and suffering from brain damage. He was recently a major player in the UFC's heavyweight division and a 2 time champion. And he's still a young guy.

He definitely didn't have any problem timing Sylvia there.

  17. Hanz

    Hanz Roberto Duran

Boxers usually are trained in that. Mercer can still throw. A fight with Kimbo today might be very different now that Kimbo knows he's got no chin along with Mercer knowing a tiny bit more of the ground. He went for a single leg on Tim after the punch and then did some ground and pound.

Sorry I should have added something to relay sarcasm in my previous statement. Just mentioning that his whole path up until the knockout was telegraphed.

But you can't deny that this same method worked very well for him during his UFC tenure, winning the title twice. That's a pretty big deal no matter how you spin it and he beat some of the best fighters around at the time using this same lumbering telegraphed style of stalking forward slowly with hands up.

Was this under standard MMA rules or was anything modified? I saw a lame promo for the fight and Merer said he's not going to let Syliva "beat him at his own game" but this didn't appear to be a straight boxing matchup.

nah, it was changed to an MMA fight at the last second because the ABC wouldn't sanction it as a boxing fight. Mercer, at the press conference, tried to bait Sylvia in a gentleman agreement to keep it a boxing fight but he would have none of it. :crying::crying::crying: Guess he should have accepted as it would have been far less humiliating for him

Tim Sylvia had almost every advantage going into this fight. It just shows how terrible MMA 'striking' is.

    Thank you Ray!!!:cheer:

Great fight. Sylvia has always been an embarassment to MMA... the fact that a slob like that could be the champion of the UFC really destroyed the sports credibility. Not that a 2-1 fighter holding the current title is credible.

I figured you'd be loving this.

    It is quite hilarious. :atu:

If this was a prime Sylvia i think he could made it to about 16 seconds though.

  27. Hanz

    Hanz Roberto Duran

Not quite the sport's credibility, steve. Only the UFC's credibility. When Tim went outside the UFC to test his skills, he was mauled within 60 seconds. So it moreso was humiliating for the UFC organization that a slob would represent their championship belt.

Thats awesome. Almost as good as the time Hermes Franca beat up that dude for $1 because he talked mad shit about him.

The UFC heavyweight division has been a shit weight class for years...that's why Sylvia's done so well there.

185 is actually worse than the heavyweight division, which is an accomplishment in itself.
