Not to mention HBO...Berto nearly lost, Angulo lost, Kirkland was arrested, Ortiz stopped. Hell of a year for their new "legends". Time to build more, I guess.
What were the odds in this fight and the over/under? You can't help but like both guys. If not for the arnaoutis fight, I would have picked Maidana with some confidence. As it was, I was hoping Maidana, but thought it was pretty much even. Maidana's body work was the difference. Ortiz wasn't going to last 12 rounds. Maidana is a better fighter than he showed tonight and he still looked pretty good. Ortiz's power threw him off of his game, i think. Ortiz still has a ton of potential, but he really needs some help. Once Maidana stopped being so sloppy, Ortiz started giving him openings and started to get tired. Those kinds of flaws can probably be fixed. Maidana should parlay this into another HBO or Showtime fight. Devon Alexander (if he gets past Witter); Bradley, Petersons, Campbell...there are some nice opponents that could make for some really nice money.
Yeah! He should have just gave short answers and give full interview later. Now he looks like a guy that went from the next G hungry champion to; I don't want to get punched in the face for a living?! Of course in a few days or weeks he'll want a rematch, but how are the hardcored Mexican fans going to recieve him? They will never come to Home De for him again!
wow. I would have been surprised at 3-1 for Ortiz and would have predicted the HBO factor would have made it 2-1 for Ortiz in what is pretty much an even fight. 5-1 is nuts.
The rabbit punches... That both guys were getting hit with...I was thinking that this could be one of those fights where both fighters walk out of the ring yet ends up in the hospital a couple hours after the fight. Those were some of the most vicious rabbit punches I've ever seen, and they were both throwing them, yet I'm not so sure they were intentional, or a by product of the holding going on. I do think Ortiz has lost some fans with the way the fight ended, AND what he said after the fight about not going out on his back. Not gonna go all StinglessKarl on the guy and say he should be willing to die in the ring, but it appears he might actually be too nice of a guy to be in the square ring...
Its really a shame that it has come to this. Watching the Showtime card I got a similar vibe, that they just take guys and choose to make them house fighters, as a way to promote the few people they put on TV. What should really happen, is these guys should fight more often, and then HBO can show cards every weekend and there'd be 30-40 names floating around of regulars. Instead they have these old DLH/Mosley/etc. stars that are the only stars, because they try to hard to talk up lesser guys. Let Ortiz or Juanma or Abraham put up a definitive win over another great fighter,...and then do it again....and again...we will get the hype if these guys are doing it in the ring. Why tell us who is good?
.... People bet it up. Ortiz started a bit over 3-1 got bet clear up to 6-1 before getting closer to 5-1 before the fight. The reult was very good for sportsbooks. Especially sportsbooks that have parlays.Arnaotis getting a real close decision over a bum kinda tipped me off that Ortiz hadn't really beaten anyone.
Ortiz is an exciting fighter, but his post fight interview said it all. I had a friend who was a beast and actually lost in a high amateur tourny against Reed's boy Charles Hatley. He had the same attitude as Ortiz. He would always talk about not getting hurt and if you are a fighter that is death I don't care how good he is. Ortiz doesn't like the life. Ironically, he reminds me of Jefferey Resto whom Ortiz defeated.
Yup, it doesn't sound like Ortiz really wants to be a fighter unless he can get his Dad in the ring with him.
Too much is made of people having legitimate anger issues. It is an athletic contest. Anger gets you so far. It is a tired story. Look at Vargas, he was an angry prick and lost ever big fight he was in. SRL and Ali both grew up middle class. Ali started boxing because someone stole his bike sounds like a story any white teen could come up with. Being a fighter is obviously genetic. You need talent unlike the UFC/MMA a BASTIAN FOR WHITE TRASH who think tattoos make them tough. You have to want to be a fighter.
ortiz showed he is a front runner, but he's still a front runner with a lot of offensive ability. at 140 there still aren't too many guys that can fuck with him. maidana is a tough guy, and the comparisons to barrios are way off base. he's a lot better than barrios.
I think after tonight its a disgrace to compare the two. Nando had all the heart in the world and woulda NEVER quit.
Wow. Just watched the fight.... if I was watching live, I would have come on here after the 2nd round and said "SHIT, say what you want, but Ortiz is a real fighter" His quitting and post-fight interview blew my f'n mind.
Yeah, even with the opening segmant on Ortiz's life, made you want to root for him and and built him up like a some warrior who has been through hell. Then this fight and he isnt sure if this is what he wants. Maybe his father was there the whole time.
Yeah, and even early in the fight.... the guy gave all indications that he was a true warrior. It'll be interesting to see if/how he bounces back. It seemed to me, based on his comments to Max, that he doesn't even want to be a fighter.
Keep in mind Ortiz had just been humiliated in front of 1000's of fans. His interview and opinions were all said in an irrational state. I agree though. He stated he wants nothing of the life of a fighter. Tomorrow, he will realize this is his job.
agREED... Ortiz's Post-Fight Interview was Probably THE WORST Response to a Loss that REED has EVER Heard... REED:shit:
I hope you refer not to me? I am on record, here and elsewhere, as saying that I think Kotelnik stops Khan late... MTF
Nah, but you hear that talk a lot. Easy fight for Khan blah blah blah. Nobody ever had an easy night with Kotelnik, but it´s true at least it should be a nice styles match up for Khan unlike Maidana. ::
Most of the people saying that have never seen Kotelnik fight. He's a tough fight for anyone. Maidana is EXACTLY the kind of guy Khan should run a mile from. He might actually die in that fight...:: MTF
Damn. Fuck that surprises me. I'll admit, I thought Ortiz was probably the best prospect in boxing. And you may have noticed, I'm usually quite conservative in my praise of prospects, I like to wait until they pass a solid test etc. Ortiz looked like the goods though. Which offensively, he is, but he obviously doesn't have the toughness. Maybe he is Bojado part two.
