When he said: "I don't deserve to be beaten up like that," I wasn't sure how to interpret it. Did he mean boxing isn't for him? Did he mean he shouldn't have been matched so tough? Or did he mean he needs to improve so as to avoid getting beaten up like that? It wasn't clear what he meant when he said it. My knee-jerk interpretation is that his having experienced it, he wants no more of it (i.e. he is quitting boxing). But he's Mexican/American. Maybe his English isn't as precise as one might expect, in which case it's entirely possible he simply meant he has to improve so as not to be hit like that. One thing's for sure. I don't thin the statement wast clear.
so you think he "was" referring to possibly quitting the sport? what did he think he'd signed up for? a career of two round knock-outs where he doesn't get hit once and his opponent just lays down for him?
Speaking of which, hopefully someone can provide the text of the entire interview so we can parse every word like it's Shakespeare.
To be honest I didn't quite get what he meant with the "deserve" bit either. But it had nothing to do with his English, which is absolutely fine.
I hope you're joking. He annuciates perfectly, but that doesn't mean he uses words in the correct context. And if he didn't, it might be a perfectly fine explanation that English isn't his first language. I never made a sweeping statement that all Mexican Americans can't speak proper English. What I did say was maybe that's why he made a statement that to several of us was ambiguous as to what he meant. You're a dick if you're not joking. I'm no racist.
Like I said, it's possible for someone to annunciate perfectly and still not have a tight grip on the connotation of certain words. I don't know if that was the case or not, but like you said, it was an odd choice of words that left me puzzled as to what he meant.
Ortiz is from Oxnard right? Just thinking about Vargas and how respected he is in Oxnard as the ultimate warrior. Just inmagine the shit Ortiz will get when he goes back if he still lives there.
If Ortiz has any brains he wouldn't care what the Oxnard crowd has to say about any so called lack of bravery He has to listen to his corner and the professionals in the fight game, not some dumb ass cholos. Vato from the barrio with his "Oye holmes, next time you got to show some huevos" aint helping his career.
yeah but the biggest criticism from fans and all of the boxing world is that Huevos is exactly what he was missing last Saturday. I'm just saying if he still lives there it's the worst timing to live there for him. Funny Arum was saying that his match maker from Top Rank told him that he knew Ortiz would fold under pressure eventually. Probably Arum just taking advantage to talk some shit.
I'd wager arum was speaking the truth. trampler knows the game and that company is not in the business of letting future stars/gate attractions just walk. golden boy has built a total of zero guys in the game into money makers. top rank has nutured countless guys to that level. they clearly knew what ortiz is made of
Good point. What indication do you think there was though, that Ortiz didn't cut it in the testicles department?
He can say all he wants, but he'll be a quitter forever now. Sucks for him, but he made that choice. He could beat the Maidana, but he's already fucked himself over.
I´d rather compete in MMA for one reason only, that their fans don´t hate you and brand you forever for tapping/quitting in a fight. Far more people die in boxing from sustained beatings, but when a guy says, that he had enough, and admits to himself that he lost to a better man that night, he gets major crap for it. Ortiz was badly hurt at the end of the 5th round. He sat in his corner with glassy eyes. He was getting battered in the 6th round, he had a bad cut over his right eye, and a badly swollen left eye. If he continued he would have been KO´d within the next two minutes. He didn´t make any excuses afterwards and gave all the credit to Maidana, and he didn´t parade around the ring like Freitas. He gave as good as he got for five rounds of what many call the FOTY and still some fans complain.
Maidana took far more punishement than Ortiz and never stopped trying, it's quite obvious that Ortiz is a front runner and can't take what he dishes, and for that he deserves criticism. In the 6th, his will was far more broken than his body. I don't have a problem with a fighter quitting when it's obvious he can't win, sure it makes me lose some respect for him as a fighter, but considering some guy's are literraly willing to die in the ring before giving up, it's only a objective evaluation. But what tickles me about Ortiz quit job is that he seemed to give up not because he didn't have any chance to win and was getting battered, but because Maidana didn't fall over ( well he did sometimes but he got up) when he hitted him with his sunday punch and that he would have to suffer to win this fight, something he wasn't willing to do. Anyone would find boxing fun if they were the one dishing the beating, but not so much when the opponent hit back. Everybody hates a bully and Ortiz showed major tendencies toward being one last saturday night. BTW, was anyone else outraged by Raul Caiz action after Ortiz quitted, instead of stopping the fight when he told him he had enough, he brought him to the doctor to make it looks like it was the doctor stopping the fight. Awfull bias
I think a lot of people are overlooking the body punching that Madena did. Qrtiz was almost strictly head-hunting, but Madena never stopped throwing to the body. I think that played a big role in making Ortiz quit.
Z is a big fan of MMA. MMA fighters can quit whenever they want like you said and nobody says shit. I liked what Max said at the end of the fight Saturday. In boxing more is expected of you than in any other sport. More then is reasonable. In no other sport are you expected to go to the death like in boxing. Ortiz fought a hellava fight up to that point and people act like hes nothing but a pussy and a quitter. He says he wants a rematch and i believe him and thats good enough for me.
And the final knock-down was a body-shot. Right to the liver. I don't think it was trivial as many claim. I think he was legitimately hurt by it and that it, along with his cut and the shiner below his other eye contributed to his decision to quit.
I disagree! Every fighter has the oportunity to redeem himself I think. It's all about how much they he is willing to try to redeem himself. If Ortiz fights and beats Maidana then what more do you want from him? Sure the loss will still be there and we all know in which fashion he lost. But to fight that same guy he quit against and beat him will say alot.
I have heard rumors and Kellerman alluded on the telecast that he had heard the same. Fighters talk. A buddy of mine went to a training camp with Francisco Bojado and he told me that he had no chance of being a successful fighter. He said he was lazy and though people were going to lay down for him andif you stood up to him he would always submit. I went on and on about his talent and he told me what he saw with his own eyes. It is pretty obvious who won that debate.
