WTF is with our current crop of boxers?
Whenever they see that they are losing they quit or look for a way out. Ortiz was more than happy that the doctor stopped the fight just when he was telling the ref he couldn't go on. Lontchi all he did was run like a second coming of Hakkar and decided to quit on his stool. Rocky Juarez decided not to risk himself fighting a bum on Saturday's card because he thought the lefty might cause him problems even if it was a bum. Watching the video of Arguello vs Escalera II we see Escalera giving his all in a fight he was losing big time, but even with both eyes swollen and bleeding profusely, he continued fighting and after being knocked down, he tried to get up to beat the count (he couldn't). That was the kind of warriors we were used to watch in the past. Now is ok, 'not to go down on my shield". That and 'great fighters' like Fraud handpicking safe, smaller opponents. Did Sugar Ray Leonard came back from his retirement to fight an overblown Wilfredo Gomez? No! He faced Marvin Hagler, the undisputed middleweight champion everyone feared! Today's fighters (except for Manny Pacquiao) don't risk anything and just suffer from lack real cojones!:shit:

Totally agreed, there seems to be a lack of commitment generally compared with guys of even 20 years ago. I should mention also that they lack skill.:shit: The pussification of amateur boxing may be a factor in all this, IMO.

yes, the fighters of 20 years ago were tougher but the unfortunate reality is most of them are struggling financially and in poor mental and physical health. the fighters of today don't want to end up like that...can't say it's not smart but it hurts the fans that want to see blood and guts.

I would suggest today's boxer makes a helleva lot more money that the guys of yesterday. Back in the day those guys used the sport as a "way out". It was a do or die situation in order to get themselves to the top.

How many shite boxer's today have plenty of $$$$ in bank

Fighters today have plenty of cajones.

Manny Pac was a safe fight for DLH. JMM has proven himself to be on Manny's level and is a tough fight for Floyd.

When I say shite. I should really say average, and very average compared to the guys back in the day. These guys make good money and for little effort in comparison.

    this is not news.

the heavyweight champion boxer used to be the "baddest man on the planet."

Today the heavyweight champion is a guy that fights like he is terrified of getting hit. has one of the best right hands in the entire sport yet only throws it 3 times per round

i understand that its a clever and efficient way to fight, but who the fuck wants to watch that? why do you think people are flocking to the cagefights?

Well Oscar quit on his stool and Floyd fights every big fight like he's scared to get his mascara smudged.:stir:

No they don´t. Undercard fighters don´t get paid sh*t and they have to pay managers, promoters, cornerman, camps and all sorts of shit depending on how good/bad they negotiate.

Calderon gets paid like 30k-35k per title defense as a unified titleholder. If he fights three times a year, he makes 100k. Take away taxes, sanctioning fees, promoter, manager, trainer, cornerman costs depending on how your contract is structured. How much do you think he has left? Only elite fighters can live off boxing for the rest of their life, while a shitty basketball player like Darko Milicic is a made man before he even played a single minute in the NBA.

Hey! It ain't just Manny who has cojones! Mosley and JMM do too, and to be honest I think Mosley has shown more than any other fighter of his generation. He has throw back like cojones.

Anyway, as for the cause of all this I blame the success of safety first guys like Floyd and RJJ. Those 2 guys were like the MJ of the sport and many other fighters came up emulating them and taking their style of fighting. At the same time, the sport is to hit and not be hit, but too many fighters take the not get hit to the extreme.

You also have trainers like Manny Steward, teaching fighters how to be safety first clinchers.

Someone mentioned Wlad, and he is the perfect example of no balls at all. No matter how overmatched or hurt his opponent is he can't take any chances because his chin is 2x's more unrealiable than Lennox Lewis' was. Wlad is the poster boy for no cojones.

Well, RJJ & Floyd are just emulators of Hector "Macho" Camacho, whose safety first, run, punch & grab technique made him a filthy millionaire. But even Camacho took his beatings like a man against Chavez and De La Hoya and he did not quit on his corner.

  16. Erratic

Camacho took his beatings against Chavez and De La Hoya like Jones did against Calzaghe, and the 3rd Tarver fight. Just looking to last the distance and not get stopped.

Camacho came into the Chavez fight as a loser. He not only didn't believe he could win, but didn't even try. He started rd 1 in survival mode.

I had wanted to see Camacho at his best against Chavez and will always wonder how that fight would have played out.

Not quite a one-sided beatdown but same end result.

Camacho was not as good as Whitaker at any stage of his career.

You know, Victor Ortiz's post-fight interview may be one of the strangest I've seen in some time. He made several comments about how he doesn't go out on his shield for nobody, but the crown jewel of the interview was when he pointed to his face and said "I don't deserve to get beat up like this." to Max Kellerman.

So... it's all going according to plan when you have an easy time beating up the OTHER guy.. but you yourself are above that, and as such do not DESERVE to have a hard fight? You "deserve" easy fights where you take no punishment? Because you are "Victorus Ortizus Maximus"?

I honestly think he has some sort of personality or mental disorder. His pre-fight interview was indicative of this, too, as he just blasted the shit out of everyone who ever did him wrong, especially his dad.

I think he got into boxing as some sort of catharsis for his childhood issues, and beating people up is part of that. But receiving the beating.... that is something different entirely. I don't even know if it's fair to say this guy lacks cojones... he actually lacks a few marbles I think.

Not sure why you found it so strange - his attitude seems pretty typical of a large % of this generation of fighters, generally.:dunno: Only strange thing was that he verbalized it so openly.

Let's face it : getting punched in the face just ain't cool anymore. The days when a man could take pride in taking his licks, standing up to them & overcoming them are over - working's for suckers, y'all! We're the hip hop generation, we want money for hustling & beating the system. And we're entitled to it, dammit! Fuck taking shots to the face or fighting the best when I can make millions dancing around the ring, contemptuous of the boos of the plebs who paid for my Bentley & the criticism of the 'haterz' in the media, stealing 'fights' on the cards against the least threatening opposition I can get away with it against! I ain't gotta go out on my shield for nobody! I don't deserve to take shots! I'm the greatest of all time whether anyone else realizes it or not, I don't need to prove nothing to you!

Maybe the 60's self esteem movement is to blame for all this shit, who the fuck knows.:notallthere:

I wouldn't crucify this whole generation just because of Ortiz. I think he's more a product of a guy being babied, spoiled and given everything easy on his way up. What makes it seem like it's the whole generation is the fact that so many of the so called stars fighting on HBO have been brought up that way. There are lot's of guys willing to take their lumps like Maidana and Malignaggi for instance. You just have too many fighter's out their who've been babied into cojonelessness.

Yeah, it's not the whole generation of course, just a creeping trend which that kind of talk is symptomatic of.

This is true. Very few boxers actually make good coin while the entire rosters of NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL and European Soccer basically become publicly subsidized millionaires the second they get drafted fairly high or grab a full-time roster spot on the team.

A guy like Bojado gets blasted for making a million bucks as a signing bonus and disappearing into obscurity, meanwhile high draft picks who never pan out in the major team leagues retire multi-millionaires in their early 20's.

I remember the Yankees drafted a high school pitcher in the early 90's named Brien Taylor. The fucker made millions and never even made it out of AA ball. Nowadays examples like that are even more exaggerated.

That's so true. My friend's younger brother was signed by the Utah Jazz basketball team in the late 80's for a cool $4 million dollars. He was with them for like three years but NEVER MADE IT OUT FROM THE BENCHES INTO THE COURT! I found that so ridiculous: paying a guy $4 million just to WATCH THE FREAKIN' GAME!!! He later was signed to play for a team in Spain for $2 million, but at least the spaniards put him to play in all their games since day one. The bastard is retired now as a millionaire. Btw his brother, my friend, is currently unemployed and struggling to make a buck to support his family.:crying:
