As far as I know off the top of my head, there has only been 1 death in a sanctioned MMA fight. I remember hearing about another in an unsanctioned, underground fight in Europe a few years back.

As for injuries, other than some broken bones and missing teeth, I can't think of anything too severe. Nothing life threatening. I should have some free time at work today, so maybe I'll look into it.

That would be cool. I'm taking off in a couple of hours to do a TV panel about MMA from the perspective of a boxing guy. Should be fun.

Sammy Vasquez is the only fighter who has ever died in an MMA bout.

Douglas Dredge? i think, died in an unsanctioned bout, as no athletic commission would sanction him to fight due to his very weak stature, and the fact that he commonly feinted.

Oh I will. It's a guy who runs a local MMA organization, a politician who is firmly against MMA.... and me, the middle guy. Can't wait, hopefully I can figure out how to post it here.

I don't know a good source for the OP.

I do know that there are so many more boxing matches than mma bouts that the 'safety' of mma might be misleading.

For example, heavier weight fighters tend to have fewer ring deaths in boxing. (pretty sure) Well, mma is skewed very much to higher weight fighters and it has almost no fights below 135. So comparisons should reflect this.

6 rd boxing matches last 18 minutes; 3 rd mma bouts last 15 minutes...so the danger per time participating could be a factor. (or not, depending on the argument)

Health risks besides death are also worth looking at, but mma doesn't have the numbers or longevity to compare. I think it's fair to assume that there will be a lot more limping, back-problems, and joint related problems in mma than in boxing. Or is it?

Regardless, there are enough dipshits in boxing and mma that I expect the debate will be far less sincere than agenda-oriented
