He can forget any kind of acting career looking like that. Wasn't that one of his goals. To become an actor?

It's too bad he was ruined by Trinidad's illegally wrapped hands. He was a great fighter prior to that fight. After it, he was a shell of himself. He was clearly damaged permanently by the Trinidad fight. He was knocked down by Rivera and wobbled by Flores, neither of whom were big punchers.

The only reason he was competitive in the ODH fight, IMO, is due to the steriods he obviously used.

Also, I think a pre-Trinidad Vargas easily dismantles Mayorga and edges out a decision against Mosley.

Not only did his durability suffer, but his coordination and speed were compromised. Not all of his down-fall can be attributed to the Trinidad fight in my opinion. For example, I think his tendency to get fat between fights and his long lay-offs didn't help any.

But there's no doubt about it that he was never the same fighter after Tito got done with him.

And for all we know, neither was Trinidad if you think about it. Sure he knocked out Joppy with his straight-armed cannon-ball left hook that was obviously illegally wrapped, but beginning with the Hopkins fight and every fight thereafter, he was never the dominant fighter he'd been. In his case it probably had to do with his moving to 160 and his having to resort to wrapping his gloves legally. I think both factors contributed to his inability to be effective.

Since the Hopkins fight the only fighter he's been able to hurt was Mayorga. And he had to beat the smitherenes out of him to put him down. There was no one-punch power there. And this against an obviously smaller opponent.

Can you get over the Tito Handwrap issue already? WTF man! Sometimes I think you bring this old issue up just to get a reaction from people.

That picture is a shame...it's too bad, Vargas' career did end up being a disappointment.

He was basically ruined by the Trinidad fight - or at least severly diminished - and whatever was left of him as a fighter after the DLH fight was pretty much finished off by suspension and injuries.

He's done a little acting, though I think the only thing I've seen him in was Alpha Dog...and a beer commercial.

You just get mad over it because your favorite fighter turned out to be a cheater. Hey, I was a huge fan of his too. But the hand-wrap issue bears repeating in any discussion involving either Trinidad or in this case Vargas.

By the way, Reid was ruined by Trinidad too. Yeah, his eye meant his career would be short regardless. But he fought on after the Trinidad fight and was never the same.

It's the same let-down as with Margarito. He was one of my favorite fighters and now I have nothing but disdain for him, given his cheating. And my guess is, like Trinidad following the revelation regarding his hand-wraps, will never be the same fighter he had been with every opponent he faces watching vigilantly as he has his hands wrapped.

And that's not to say Mosley doesn't deserve credit for his victory over Margarito, but let's face it: fighting Margarito with his plaster is different than fighting him without it.

Cotto couldn't go to the body because he was being assaulted with a deadly weapon essentially and had no choice but to keep moving. Mosley, on the other hand, was able to stand in there because he was on an even playing field with the so-called Tijuana Tornado.

The same was true when it came to Trinidad's fight against Hopkins and every fight he had subsequent to it.

I understand you want to just sweep the issue under the rug. But given Trinidad's prominence in the sport for so long, you'll have to wait a few more years if not more before it's no longer topical.

Have you heard of punchers that lost their power once they moved up in weight? for example, Roberto Duran? Nuff said!

If you check out Vargas official myspace page all you'll find are photos of his athletic prime. I had to 'dig deep' to find this one below.

He might be fat now, but he still can do things we only dream about!

I dont think he lost his power at 160. He knocked out Mayorga and knocked out Cherifi before that.

He was talking about Trinidad's "super-human power". Of course only Manny Pacquiao hits harder as he moves up in weight...until he gets caught loading his wraps!

How does one get that fat? I couldn't get that fight if that was my life's goal for a year and I had all meals paid. What a pig. Btw, his story is not going to end happily either. Vargas is a little cholo and he also has brain damage. I'd be shocked if he made 40.

Cherifi was a joke. And he couldn't put Mayorga away without hitting him over and over and over again. He showed no one-punch power like he always had had prior to the Hopkins fight.

He never really had one punch power. He never knocked anyone out with just one punch.

Whether one wants to admit it or not, the sport has suffered since Vargas, Trinidad, etc became shot. The sport needs fighters like them to thrive. Exciting fighters who come forward and aren't afraid to duke it out.
    Vargas was fun!
