Floyd sr. is not a great trainer. Much in the way Alton Merkinson is not a great trainer. A lummox could train great talent, as proven by Floyd's prominence.

Cotto is going to have to get faster on his feet Pacquiao won't stand infront of him much...COTTO needs 2 catch/block punches w/ his gloves better...his usual catching w/ his face is not going to work vs. Pacquiao....

Before every Cotto fight..u would start threads..or post about how Cotto looks weightdrain...how he doesn't have a corner..rumors out of PR about his partying..etc..etc... This time u are the confident one...*FAKE confidence IMO*..and i'm the worried 1... Cotto needs to go in with a game plan...hope he doesn't go in thinking let me just throw punches and he will fall over...

Floyd Sr has improved many of the fighters he has trained. His son is a 5 weight champion that Sr trained throught his childhood. Alton Merkerson stole Roy Sr's merchandise.
Yes, if Cotto does not have both a competent trainer and a well thought out game plan, he is almost a lock to lose. There is a part of me that admires the Puerto Rican mentality of keeping very close, trusted, and perhaps loved people in your entourage, whether the going is smooth or rough. Tito was very much like that was with his father. But that mentality needs to be tempered by practicality and an awareness of what is at stake in a boxing ring (not just a win or loss... sometimes you career... sometimes your life). Cotto needs to shell out some $$$ for a trainer and cornerman who can analyze this fight and help Cotto to take advantage of Manny's weaknesses, mistakes, and his predictable patterns, while working on eliminating Cotto's weak points. This trainer should NOT be someone in his entourage nor someone he already knows like his plumber or landscaper, no matter how much he trusts them. Cotto has the strength, he has the punching power, he has a great body attack, he tends to be very accurate with his punches, he can clearly absorb punishment if necessary, and god knows he has the heart - now he needs someone with knowledge and experience to take this and organize it into an efficient attack plan against Manny. Everyone saw what Manny did against Oscar. More of the same is coming. Watch THAT FIGHT, because THAT FIGHT is a peak into the future for Cotto - it shows how Roach/Manny approach a fight against a bigger fighter who can box and has a left hook to watch out for. This will be very similar to how they approach Cotto. Cotto needs to watch that tape and work on ways to disrupt Manny by timing him as he comes in to punch, and by preventing him from moving about the ring as he pleases by doing some cutting off. Cotto also needs to watch for places where Manny is open to body shots so he can intelligently place them throughout the fight and break down Manny's ability to move. Also, watch the tape to see how Manny sets up the straight left and every day work on drills for blocking or slipping it, or even countering it if need be. This isn't rocket science - but every "bigger" fighter who takes on Manny seems to just go in thinking that going in for "another day at work" is somehow going to be enough to best Pacman. Well it's NOT. I hope Cotto understands this.
