Joe Calzaghe: "I Can Beat Wladimir Klitschko"

    By Mark Vester

He said it - not me. The retired, and undefeated former champion, Joe Calzaghe, believes that he can beat any of the top fighters at super middleweight and light heavyweight - and he is so confident of his talents that he also believes that he can rise up in weight and beat the 6'6 WBO/IBF heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko.

“I see the guys fighting now and I know I could beat them all,†Calzaghe told Walesonline. “That’s always the case. I’m Joe Calzaghe, I could beat anyone. I could step up and beat Wladimir Klitschko if I wanted."

As far as retirement, Calzaghe does not miss the training or the fighting. He does miss the money and the roar of the crowd.

“At the moment everything is still good,†Calzaghe says. “I’m not missing fighting one little bit. I don’t miss getting punched in the face, I don’t missing starving myself and I’m not missing running up those big hills. I am missing the pay cheques and having 50,000 people screaming my name though.â€

Calzaghe did not miss the opportunity to take a few shots at his UK rival, WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch. Calzaghe doesn't think much of Froch or his talent and doesn't give him much of a chance in Showtime's Super Six tournament. He feels Froch will take a bad beating in the tournament.

“If you are asking what I think of Carl Froch and whether I’m tempted to come back and fight him, then my answer is simple. I’m watching him getting beaten up already, so I don’t need to bother. I watched Jermain Taylor kick his arse for 12 rounds the other week. All right, Froch did well in that last 12 seconds, but I’m not fooled. He is in that Super Six series now and I don’t even think he will know his name by the time that’s finished. It doesn’t need me coming back for that to happen,†Calzaghe said.

    ---------------------------------

:boohoo: This is the second time Calzaghe and his father have had a go at heavyweights,.. I'd love to see the smart arse get in there and fucking prove it,.. he wouldn't be rising from this particular first round knockdown, that's for sure.

Nothing worse than smaller fighters taking pot shots at heavier divisions they wouldn't dare venture into. Adhere to your place, cowardly ankle biters.

Sums up why, despite all his talent, no one will miss him...after all his achievements, all the money and attention, he's still a whiney bitter cunt

Calzaghe's the only prize fighter or superfighter whom I never gave a darn about watching. His style just didn't work for me at all. Excellent talent and everything and deserves respect for his accomplishments. I just think it's easy for a guy in retirement to talk sh*t, knowing full well he'll never get called out to put his money where his mouth is.

Calzaghe spent the majority of his career avoiding any kind of challenge now he retires and expects people to care what he thinks...and for the record Wladamir would punch a hole through this clown.

I think even the harshest Wlad haters out there would actually jump on the Wlad-wagon for one night if it meant beating the f*ck out of Joe Calzaghe.

:boohoo: It's just irritating that heavyweights cop shit for thier mass and the force of gravity on thier shoulders and yet,... smaller, naturally more agile fighters get praised as "REAL warriors",.. 'unlike those shitty, skilless, sloths',... well simple.....prove it, dont talk shit in hiding, fight Wlad, and let's see Calzaghe take one of the stiff robot's left hooks, ...it's gots ta be softa???.. look how 'slow and sloppy' it is.. not much ''quickness'' about it,...speed = power!!!.. If any heavyweight boasted about how they could beat smaller fighters they'd be labelled classless cowards, but it's alright for the ankle biters.

Calzaghe is retired now...therefore his opinion is irrelevant. Nobody cares what retired old farts have to say about anything. He's a dreamer.

Calzaghe could barely make it at 175  and against old timers! If he had a slow start against Wlad like he always does, he'd hit the canvas Hatton style.

Did you see Calzaghe standing next to Lennox Lewis at the commentary booth a year back? Looked like a f*cking child in comparison. Wladimir would eat his asshole alive!

I remember Toney turning down that fight.

Calzaghe should call out Haye if he beats Valuev. Give the Brits a heavyweight title fight. I know, I know, very likely scenario.

He was considered a top 3 heavy by many after beating Holyfield and Ruiz.

Ya know...the hilarious thing is, if Hopkins and Jones had retired instead of treading on and eventurally facing Joe.....his status wouldn't be NEARLY as high as it is now.

Jones in his prime would have annihalated Calzaghe. Hopkins in his prime would have most assuredly decisioned him handily.

    Fuck Joe Calzaghe.

Agreed about Jones, but not by annihilation,... I dont know when Hopkins prime is supposed to be, but he's severely overrated, if you dont blindly follow him around while he runs around potting, clinching and nut crunching, he's fucked,...he'll fake an injury, a low blow, or dive out of the ring, especially if his opponent has swift hands. Keep that disgraceful bitch out of this thread please.

I would also beat up Wlad.
Unfortunately I am retired, so you'll just have to take my word for it I suppose.

This is a new one. Calzaghe has previously been blamed for ducking non-existant contenders, for fighting lots of bums and for not fighting in the US. Now he's beeing criticised because two of the guys he fought didn't retire before they fought him?

Now there's an idea! Perhaps Kessler should have retired too, and Lacy, and Mitchell, Brewer, Reid, Woodhall, Eubanks...In fact, if EVERYONE had retired, then think of how low Calzaghe's status would have been! He'd have been undefeated, sure, but with no wins to speak of he would barely have been mentioned...

For the record, Hopkins would not have beaten Calzaghe in his "prime". I saw nothing to suggest that when they fought. People like to rag on Calzaghe for fighting bums in his super-middleweight days (which I don't argue with), yet somehow Hopkins gets a free pass. His opponents were fucking shocking.

Joe looked terrible against an old Hopkins. A younger verison with younger legs would have won easily...Its not really debatable.

People rarely look good against Hopkins. But Calzaghe looked fine and Hopkins was so desperate late on that he tried to get Joe DQ'd.

    What's not debatable?

Kessler is the only good fighter of the bunch...Eubanks was on his last legs when he faced Joe. Should Roy get respect for beating Mike Macullum?
