I think Mosley is P4P on of the strongest boxers out there and one of the toughest guys in the modern era. I know its seems like a weird but question, but think about it. Everytime there is a dangerous big fight there is a question about it even though he's never been cut or stopped.

When he fought Miguel Cotto, there was a consensus that the younger Cotto was going to "wear down" Mosley and stop him in the late rounds. Instead in the latter rounds it was Cotto getting on his bike against the 37 year old Mosley and retreating while Mosley was ironically the fresher fighter down the stretch of the fight.

When he fought Margarito, many people thought Antonio was going to retire him. Instead Mosley manhandled him and at times seemed to throw him around the ring. At times, it looked like man against boy.

Even when he fought DLH the first time people thought DLH was way too strong for him (But I can understand this reasoning because he was just moving up from lightweight).

I think people use the Wright fights (where he fought a naturally bigger man) along with his age add to this perception. As far his toughness is concerned I've heard people refer to Mosley as a "tough bastard" but it seems like its more referring to his willingness to fight anybody and take rematches. But in a physical sense I think sometimes its overlooked.

No its not. Everybody knows Shane is strong as hell, and has tremendous desire/excellent chin. Its not underrated at all.

How can it be underrated when it's always listed as his strenghts when people talk about him? What has been overrated is the effect aging would have on him. He, of course, doesn't age as fast as people thought he would.

The thing is, I thought Mosley was afraid to let his hands go between Forrest I and Wright I. Joe Goosen got him punching again in the Wright rematch.

Well, he has more left in his tank than given credit for, but that doesnt mean he hasnt aged. He's still fast, but not NEARLY as fast or as sharp as he was 8-9 years ago.

I mean is there ANYBODY on here that thinks Cotto woulda beaten the 2001 Mosley?

Miguel woulda gotten the Antonio Diaz treatement from a prime Mosley.

I agree except for the last part. Cotto is way tougher and smarter than Diaz.

Antonio Diaz was never even as good as his brother Julio.

Let's not forget when Shane caught and ko'd Diaz that fool was doing some stupid dance in the middle of the ring right in front of him. I was glad he got blasted. :bangh:

I actually do think his toughness may be underrated. Sure everyone gives Shane credit for his toughness and chin, but not to the degree that they should. Going off his whole career, Shane is right up there with Marvin Hagler in the chin department, the shit is fucking granite.

Yet you still have several people who thought both Cotto and Margarito would KO him. You even have one or 2 morons on here who give Cintron a puncher's chance of beating him.

So yeah, I do think people kind of underrate the level of how tough and strong Shane's chin/durability is.

Julio Diaz SUCKED! He couldnt even beat Manfredy.

Antonio was considerably better and tougher than his glass chinned baby bro.

And sure Cotto is better than A.Diaz ever was. But he wouldnt have fared too much better vs a prime Mosley IMO. The 2000-2001 Shane woulda lit Cotto up somethin terrible.

I'd pick Mosley too Xplosive, but I think you're exageratting how good mosley was. During 2000-2001, the only notable opponent he beat was DLH, by close but clear decision. Apart from that, he beat Diaz, who was good but was fighting for the first time at 147 and wasn't, IMHO, half as good as Cotto. He beat Stone and Taylor, both stiffs that had no chance at all.

Then he steps up in 2002 and gets thoroughly dominated by Forrest and begins the gunshy part of his career, as Steve_Dave pointed out.

I think Mosley would have beaten Cotto either via a close but clear ud or a late stoppage, but there's no way he treats him like the bums he was fighting during that period(minus DLH of course).

Mosley won that fight 9 rounds to 3, hardly close.

The first half of the fight was even, the second half of the fight was all Mosley.

8-4 at worst, that's giving Oscar 4 of the first 6 rounds.

I think Mosley really was brilliant at his peak. Vernon just had the exact anti Mosley style, and was an excellent fighter himself.

He would have battered Cotto. Sure it wouldn't have been as 1 sided as the Diaz fight, but it would have been dominant.

I don't think any case could have been made for Oscar, but I remember having it 7-5 for Mosley. I can't provide a breakdown though, It's been a while since I've seen that fight. Mosley has always been bothered by the jab and Cotto has a pretty good jab, he also has the habit of pulling straight back, something Forrest exploited greatly with his right hand, Cotto doesn't have a bad right hand either. I'd pick Mosley, but I'm not so sure he would have "Battered" Cotto. The only people Mosley battered at 147 and above are no hopers and Margarito. Cotto's tough and is smarter than given credit for. Let's agree to disagree.

I think it should be. First of all in the first Wright fight Mosley complained of having an off night (monkey on his back) so that's probably why he did so poorly. Secondly after the 2nd Wright fight he went back to 147 and had to slowly work his confidence back fighting and decisioning guys who he would have destroyed just a couple years earlier.

So I think maybe Goosen did help him get it going for the 2nd Wright fight, but Wright isn't exactly a strong puncher and it wasn't like Goosen totally fixed Shane's confidence problem for good.

I agree that Shane probably would have stopped Cotto, but I seriously doubt it would have been similar to the Diaz fight. Cotto's jab and timing was too good for Shane to just dominate him. However Shane at his best before Vernon laid seeds of doubt in his mind was a beast, and I think he would have wore Cotto down like he nearly seemed to do in their actual fight.

Yeah, but the fact of the matter is, in Forrest II, Marquez, Oscar II and Wright I, Mosley was afraid to let his hands go.
