How many fights has Jones had?....and for how many of those has Al merkerson been in his corner?.....so all these years he has had a corner with an in sufficient 'skill set'?

I stopped reading when it said that RJJ took the worst beating of his career against Calzaghe. Also, his Dad couldn't help him beat Tarver in the rubber match. How would he have helped him against Calzaghe? RJJ is so full of shit. He's delusional.

I think there is no doubt Glen provided the worst beating of Roy.

2nd place? Not sure if Tarver's KO is worse than Calz's outclassing.

To this day I'm still amazed on how Jones Jr Declined and lost. In his prime it was difficult to imagine/see him lose.

 

Maybe, if his had held Calzaghe's hands while Jones was punching. Well, at least Jones might have won some rounds like that

It's hard for me at times to understand what motivates boxers to say the things they say. I understand an active boxer, young or in their prime saying questionable things in order to help rationalize a loss and return to the ring with confidence. It may be necessary in some cases to the psyche of the boxer. "I only lost because I had the flu that night" or "pulled muscle in sparring" or "ate bad oysters" ,etc., etc.

But once age has caught up with you, I was never able to comprehend why that would be considered something BAD or somehow derogatory towards one's character to admit it? Watching Pernell Whitaker and Mark Breland on FNF last time around was kind of refreshing because they made comments about how sometimes it's "time to get out of the way and let the younger guys take over". Not like you are losing, or quitting, or admitting you stink. He didn't say "let the better guys take over" - he said "younger guys".

Roy Jones would do well for himself to admit it's time, and he lost some fights, quite badly, because he got old and he started to lose some of what he had. Why he keeps on twisting himself in mental pretzels with this confounded crap he spews is beyond me. I think it's actually very honorable to admit when you don't have it anymore, and move on. You don't need to say you're no good anymore, and you don't need to explain your losses at the tail end of your career. It's understood. The more he babbles to somehow justify his losses, the worse my opinion of him becomes.

 

But Roy's legacy is really in need of one more big win. It would change a lot for him to beat Kessler or Dawson or Hopkins. Many people have jumped off of his bandwagon. A great final performance would help.

And no, Lacy isn't that guy.

 

i think if he has one more big win, then that actually gives his defeats greater prominence........Jones fans and most astute boxing critics realise that post-Ruiz, Jones was never the fighter he was before he bulked up to heavyweight.....but that notion would be undermined if, hypothetically, Roy is to have one big win....cause how could Roy be shot vs Johnson/Tarver/Calzaghe......but not against Dawson/Kessler or whoever.

I agree.. not even that long ago, like 6 or 7 years, he was basically unstoppable. He was percieved in much of the same light as Floyd is, only Roy losing was 5x further from the realm of possibility.

I can't believe Roy at 35 moved from heavyweight back down to 175... that was the most bullshit retarded move made in the history of boxing. He should have retired after Ruiz fight and called it a career as one of if not the greatest fighters ever.

 

Roy had too much ego to retire. That is the reason he is embarrassing himself till now.

He has money, fame, and a great legacy in boxing. But the guy just can't call it a day.

And what's funny about that is back in the day Roy was saying he would probably retire around the age of 30, and that he didn't want to wind up punchy so he wouldn't stick around long and here he is doing the exact opposite of what he said.

I felt he should have came down to Cruiserweight snatched up a title there alot of them guys like Tarver and possibly Calzaghe or sumone would have been following him up there for a fight instead of draining himself going back to Lt. Heavyweight.. Damn that was a bad move..

I didn't think people thought Holy was shot after the 3rd Bowe loss. That was a rough give and take fight and it just looked like Holy came up short if memory serves me correct. Is that really what the scribes were saying? Now the Czyz fight I can't comment on because I don't think I even saw that one.
