Wow, this is a long time coming. I interviewed Micky Ward shortly after he retired in mid-late 2003 and he said Wahlberg was going to play him in a movie way back then.

Have you read Halloran's book, Irish Thunder: The Hard Life and Times of Micky Ward?

Nah, I haven't. Didn't even know it existed to be honest. I would like to, I really like Micky Ward.

I would buy a movie ticket to see Wahlberg get punched in the face repeatedly.

And now that I think of it, Bale as well.

of all the great fighters I've seen in this generation of boxing they could have made movies about

disgraceful, disgraceful stuff. a mockery of the sport. I wonder if they can get chris rock to play reggie green putting a hurting on ward then getting shafted at the end with a premature stoppage. or possibly they can find an up&coming latino actor to portray antonio diaz thumping that club fighter.

You mean the guy playing Alfonso Sanchez.

Speaking of other boxers in this era, I think I remember there being talk some time ago about turning Johhny Tapia's story, based on his bio Mi Vida Loca, into a movie.

    The Fighter.....pretty bland title

I was never a fan of tapia's but he was 100 times the fighter ward was, and lead a far more interesting life to make a film about.

That's REED's Problem w/this as Well...Ward's Story ISN'T Overly Interesting & he WASN'T an Accomplished Fighter (Unless Beating Shea Neary for the WBZ Crap Title Counts)...

Ward was a NICE Guy & an HONEST Fighter, but NOWHERE CLOSE to Being Worthy of his Own Motion Picture...& ALREADY, U Can Tell that there's Gonna B Some CRIMINAL EXAGGERATIONS that'll PISS Off Hardcore Boxing Fans...

Ward does seem to be a curious choice to make a movie about. His personality seems rather bland and he wasn't a real elite fighter. You have some drama with his brother and also his family life, and of course Hollywood can always change their own things (making a minor jr ww belt into being THE LIGHTWEIGHT CHAMPION) to make a film better.

You'd think guys like Tapia and Ouma would have Hollywood films made about them before Ward though. And also especially in light of what has happened recently, Arguello.

Although an Arguello film, and a Tapia one too, would probably make Raging Bull look like a feel-good movie.

Now THAT'S a Fighter that DESERVES a Flick in his Honor...Tapia's Life was a ROLLER COASTER & he Accomplished BOATLOADS MORE than Ward did....

Like who? Your chickensh*t farce of a hero Floyd Fairyweather Jr? The big mouthed bastard who's scared to death of fighting anybody with a pulse in his weight class so instead opts to call out smaller guys to fight him at catch weights and all the while claiming nobody is worthy to fight him cause they either aren't undefeated and/or don't bring in enough money? That's the great fighter you're talking about? The guy who's done nothing but make a mockery of this once great sport and drive it further into the sh*thole?

Agreed on him being a better boxer and more interesting subject...and if he was from Massachuesetts...

I can't remember what happened with the Tapia bio pic, I think there was talk about it when the book came out a few years ago, but I don't know if it's going anywhere.

He's had more legal problems since then.

That's the sad part of Tapia's story, but yeah, he'd be about as compelling a subject for the big screen as there is in the sport.

a movie about mayweather's life would not be compelling either. it would be about as worthless as ward wouldve been to mayweather jr as a sparring partner.

Bunch of whiny cunts. Who gives a shit who it's about. It's a film with boxing in it. :nono:

If it's well made well, it will be good. If it's made for shit, it will be for shit.

Rocky Balboa was originally a 30-something clubfighter who wasn't worth a shit.

Marlon Brando was a bum in "On The Waterfront".

Mountain Rivera was a bum in "Requiem For A Heavyweight"

James Braddock was a below average champion in "Cinderella Man".

Jake Lamotta got raped 5 out of 6 times by Sugar Ray Robinson.

Toro Moreno was an overhyped bum in "The Harder They Fall".

    All Classic Films.

I'm really sick of this "deserves" shit when it comes to boxing movies. It's about who can write the best screenplay.

I've also heard from people involved with this film that it will be more about Dickie Ecklund then it will be about Mickey Ward.

No it will not be about Dickie Ecklund becoming a World Champion. It will be more a family drama then anything.

Dumb shits!!! Maybe Transformers 3 will be right around the corner for you pricks. :shit:

I always thought Tim Roth would be perfect to play Mickey Ward.

you make some valid points nobleart. if movie producers were seeking an average clubfighter to glorify, they found him.

What else have you heard about it?

I mean, my guess would be the movie culminates with Ward-Gatti I.

The movie will end before the Ward / Gatti fights.

Honestly, it doesn't make sense to me..........but like I said, It sounds like Ecklund is going to be the main focus of the movie.

Hollywood Racist Moment - The minute they decided to make this movie.

Obviously it helps that Micky is white, but let's be honest, if this movie were about an average black fighter the movie draw would be the same as the draw an average black fighter would get in the ring.

I don't think anyone who doesn't know anything about Mickey's life really has a right to judge. I never read his bio so who knows, maybe his life will translate to a great story.

I think I heard once they were going to do a movie on Ouma's life story. I think it'd bomb.

kasim ouma is another guy who was a better, much better, fighter than ward with a better story for a film, credit ward for having the proper location and complexion

I also think the Gatti-Ward trilogy helped too. To be honest Ward deserves that movie for those fights, Gatti did too. They should focus on the Gatti Ward friendship that developed afterwards and can even put the Gatti death in their somewhere.

Speaking of that has Ward ever said anything about Gatti's passing?
