Bernard Hopkins was on the Calvin Murphy radio show last night and an associate of Roy Jones Jr. got hold of Roy so he called in to join the conversation that soon turned into a fight negotiation. Jones came to the conclusion that “Bernard is scared,†and here are some highlights…
Bernard Hopkins: Money has been the issue for the past ten years with us.
Roy Jones: How much will you give me
BH: I will make it a 60:40 split
RJ: How about 60 to the winner and 40 to the loser
BH: Now you want to make a contest out of it. I don’t need Roy Jones. It could wind up in the judges hands and you never know what will happen.
RJ: You pick the judges.
BH: If RJ will take 40, we can get it done before the year is out. But if not…
RJ: He already has an L on his record from me and he is trying to make me take 40 so he can prove that I am the lesser man. But if will make it 60 to the winner and 40 to the loser I will take my chances with that.
BH: Do you think I would make more money fighting Roy Jones than I would a young stud like Adamek or Dawson?
RJ: Bernard doesn’t want to fight me. Why would he want to fight me? He’s having fun now at this point in his career. He doesn’t want to take that gamble.
BH: Is Roy willing to go on record to take 40% win, lose or draw?
Show Producer: How about the winner-take-all?
RJ: That’s even better for me.
Show Producer: Bernard are you there?
RJ: No. When you said winner-take-all you ran him off the phone. He’s been doing that to me for 5 years now. He disappeared. That’s what happens to me. every time.

I admit Bernard comes off looking bad in this exchange but I think he's having fun just toying with Roy now.

Used to be anybody was lucky to get a 90/10 split with Roy and now he's running around desperate since he's not on top anymore.

Yeah,.. fucken 60/40 ..when Roy holds ownership of bitchkins birth certificate, and has been the bigger draw his entire career. Hops knows that Roy can punch from all angles, his handspeed is superior and very frightening for him in particular, he also knows that Roy isn't going to follow him around like a slow robotic idiot, it's toe to toe, centre of the ring, or nothing. Hopkins cant win.

The transcript doesn't do it justice. Hops clowned himself. He brought up Roy talking to him in 01, but Roy countered that too by making Hopkins admit that Roy was giving him career advice and not avoiding the fight.

 

I thought I was reading talk from 2002 when this would have been vaguely relevant. Who wants to watch two middle aged fighters rematch a fight from 2 decades ago?

 

I think Jones offer is fair! He said Winner takes 60% the loser takes 40%.

 

I agree.. Even though Roy isn't what he was there are still way more people who wanna see these 2 fight then the Dawson and Adamek.. Thats a fair deal.. Winner takes the 60.. The money should be good.. Hopkins always finds a way to get out of not fighting Roy..

Nope. And Hopkins knows it better than any of us. I don't think he could beat Dawson either. But if he faced him instead of RJJ I'd understand seeing as how Hopkins is with HBO and also that at this stage I think Dawson is the better fighter. At least he's perceived to be.

 

Hopkins is calling out Paul Williams and negotiating with Tomasz Adamek.

I think he nows the deal.

because then the fight would actually get made: something Hopkins has no interest in happening. and there's no way Hopkins will fight Dawson. i'd be shocked if he made that fight and Dawson's status as champion is no doubt the only reason Hopkins is considering fighting Adamek at 200 pounds.

 

Well,.. pot shotting Adamek to a decision win, will give Hopkins a little more credibility in being 'worthy' to challenge Dawson you see,.. afterall,.. Dawson has already shut the 'cruiserweight champ' out,..and beaten Hopkins career best win Tarver, TWICE,.. so you know,...Hops has alot to prove, this is a good first step.

What if the alternative is HBO wanting Hopkins to fight the winner of Dawson-Johnson II?

He can fight Adamek, he can fight Dawson, he could possibly fight the winner of Valuev/Haye. Hopkins is not the one dressing like a queer pirate to get attention. ::

 

Adamek's camp isn't just waiting around for Hopkins to make a decision, they made it known that if the Hopkins deal wasn't solidified in time they'd go ahead with Golota.

And if Hopkins wants to fight Jones, that may suggest how much interest he has in Dawson.
