At their bests... I think Mosley gives Duran a competitive fight actually and it wouldn't surprise me if at some point he's up on the cards. But going down the stretch I think Duran just holds up much better, especially in a 15 rounder....

    Duran via UD...

Duran indeed holds better than Mosley but it wouldn't win him the fight. Mosley is quicker, punches at least as hard, can take a punch and has the strength to deal with Duran's clinching. Mosley by convincing UD

Duran also has about 15 times more skill. Also Mosley clinches at least as much as Duran ever did.

    Duran by competitive UD.

Duran was more skilled than Mosley who relied on his natural talent more, but it is not like Duran was a master technician either. Or if he was, the fabulous skills disappeared against almost all of his best opponents

Yeah he looked like a real bum against Leonard, Hagler, De Jesus, Buchanan, Cuevas, Moore, Barkley, etcetera, etcetera. A total winger.

Leonard he beat (questionably) once when Ray slugged foolishly and when Leonard started to use his skill, Duran became clueless. Hagler beat him handily. DeJesus also beat Duran. Barkley-win was a gift and Iran wasn't very good fighter to begin with. The others are solid bunch of guys Duran defeated one way or another. That is just what I was talking about: against good opponents his skills worked. Against the very good opponents he usually got slapped. I never said he was a bum, you did that:kick:

This is an utterly pointless conversation. Nonetheless....

    A) nonsense on all counts
    B) Yes, 10-5 or so in a very competitive fight against one of the greatest fighters 4 classes above his prime weight.
    c) And was dismantled in both rematches
    d) nonsense
    e) if you're talking about the Hearns and Benitez defeats you're, as you know fine well, talking about fights 3 weights and many years past prime and a guy who was training extremely inconsistently.

You mays well bring up Maradona's performances in USA 94 to show that he wasn't as skillful as people think....

This is a welterweight (mythical) fight and to analyze it you have to take it into account that Duran was not nearly as good and consistent as he was at lightweight and lesser opponents. If you judge Shane Mosley based only on his fight against Adrian Stone he seems pretty much unbeatable too.

Well in a mythical match up I'd match the best version against the best version. And I'd take the Duran who beat Leonard and Palomino over the Molsey who beat Oscar every time, though I think it would be competitive due to styles.

If you wanna match the out of shape, demotivated later versions of Duran against Mosley at his best then I think Shane wins quite comfortably.

Duran only lost one fight at Welter and that was to Leonard. He didn't start being inconsistent until he got to 154 and above. The win (and it WAS a win....anyone who questions that win is either crazy or just hates Duran) over Leonard was huge and he also toyed with Carlos Palomino @ 147 who was a very good fighter and former champ and much better than anyone Mosley beat other than DLH @ 147.

Since Margarito's resume is certainly open to speculation, I'd say broadwayjoe has every right to make that observation. Margarito's biggest win was against Cotto, other than that there is Cintron who absolutley blows. Palomino dismantled a very solid John Stracey as well as defeating Armando Muniz, one of the better welterweights to not win a title (just ask Jose Napoles, who decisioned him by razor-thin margin) and the rest of his comp is no worse than even with Margarito's. He also did it without loading his gloves. I find it hard to believe that Margarito decided to start loading his gloves to face an older former champion that most thought he would beat. His accomplishments have to be called into question the same way we might wonder about the late career accomplishments of Barry Bonds or Roger Clemens or Rafael Palmeiro. Their actions call everything they have done into question.

"questionably" WTF? And SRL's fight-plan was only foolish in hind-sight. Going in, he was the bigger man. The bigger fighter.

Personally I think people over emphasize the change in tactics between the first and the second. Duran was making a brawl out of the first one no matter what approach Ray took.

Duran was too crafty for Shane, and will apply constant pressure while beating him to the punch inside. Mosley is a sucker for right hands and Duran could land those constantly. Duran by a comfortable UD.

    Spot on post.

Carlos punched from the inside out, while Margarito punches from the outside in.

Carlos was at least a level above the guy, and was a first ballot Hall of Famer, something the cheating Margarito will never be.

I can see this as a classic fight, but we need to distinguish it between being a 12 round fight and a 15 round fight before I make a call between these two brilliant gladiators at 147.

Then why didn't Duran do it in the next fight or in the other bouts where he got boxed silly?

You don't think the Barkley fight was a gift?:lol:Barkley won that fight by at least 3 points clearly. It was a robbery.
Both guys loved to hold more than punch. It would be an awful fight and hard on the eyes uch like the majority of Mosley and Duran fights. Come on though, Mosley has no chance here none. Mosely beat a prime DLH once and has lost nearly all his big fights against good guys in his prime. This is a fact. I disagree that a prime DLH is better than a welterweight Robverto Duran sorry.

actually, he didn't get boxed silly. that's a myth. SRL, in my opinion, definitely made a conscious decision to use more foot movement in the second fight. and he had more success as a result. but it's not like he won every round. or that Duran wasn't landing punches.

if anything, the impact on Duran that SRL's strategy had was more mental than anything.

not sure how you can discredit Duran's win over Leonard and not Mosley's win over DLH

DLH fought a much stupider fight by trying to walk down the "smaller" man and prove to be a warrior after the Trinidad fight...and even then the fight was quite close

^^^It wasn't just that.. Mosley set a good pace and he forced Oscar to fight at that level. Oscar tried to stay behind his jab in the 1st round but changed up after Mosley landed some right hands.

Mosley and Roberto Duran are not even close to the same level of fighter. People talk shit about Duran losing to every great fighter he fought. Mosley beat Oscar once and that's it for his career.

He got humiliated in the rematch
Got humiliated by Vernon Forrest twice
    Humiliated by Winky Wright.
Lost to Cotto , COTTO!! ALthough, I felt the fight was a draw.

He beat a dead Vargas, a deader Mayorga(and needed a last second kayo to do so) and Margarito. Duran should punch people for comparing the two. Duran is an atg. Mosely is not even close.

Hmmm well tho I agree with most, lets actually put what actually happened in those fights.
Mosley did get the decision against Oscar in the 2nd fight but yes I and as most did agree Oscar won. Vernon did beat his ass in the first but he made a very close fight out of the 2nd, lets not discredit that, that was a very close fight, yes Vernon won, but he didn't get humiliated, in anyway.
And yes Winky beat him up the first fight but again the rematch was again extremely close, and yes Winky did win but again did humiliate or blow out Mosley, it was a 7 to 5 rounds type of fight...
Suran is one of my favorites of all time, but dont discredit Mosley in order to make your point, Mosley has done alot in his career.

Incorrect. The second fight with Forrest was certainly not close. It was one of the most cowardly performances in history and one that I haven't seen since grade school. Shane ran from Forrest and grappled with him like he had knife in his hand.

I am glad you brought up the Myth of the "closer" Winky rematch. Sure, the judges were corrupt, one was that ridiculously called it a draw. wINKY WON THE FIRST FIGHT 10-2. HE won the second 8-4 in real life. So in 24 rounds Shane won at most 6. Winky barely even tried in the rematch. For a guy who gets alot of shit. Winky made Shane and Tito look like sparring partners literally.

Forget you Ike. You want to hate Shane with a bias go ahead, I don't care. However I won't let you do it by lying. How can you argue a fight you only saw once. I watched Forrest-Mosley 2 several times and it was a closer fight then the first and wasn't as overly clinchy as you make it seem. Same thing with the Winky fight. It was a hell of a lot closer than the first fight and Shane even hurt Winky in the 11th rd.

2 other factors when discussing the Winky fights. For one thing Winky was way bigger than Shane who was fighting in a division that wasn't nearly his best. You guys give Duran that alibi but not Shane? Also in the first Winky fight Shane clearly stated he didn't feel right after the first rd so it's quite possible he wasn't at his best then. I admit Shane losing to Cotto was dispicable and really hurts his resume but your hatred is so biased you actually have to twist up any positive factors Mosley has into a negative.

I have seen the fight a couple of times. Shane fought like a coward. He has shown heart in several fights too, but not in that fight. He basically quite 25 seconds in the fight. He threw a bomb as the opening exchange started and then basically quit when Forrest stood up to it. Shane was terrified that night.I can't stand Duran either you can ask Jaws I talk shit to him once a month. Duran still was a great fighter, Shane is not.
