Monthly shows are a prescription for failure. . I'm very surprised that Top Rank and Telefutura couldn't work something out. It has to be one of Telefutura's highest rated shows, doesn't it? Plus, they kill an hour on Galavision each week for replays. I wouldn't be surprised if Telefutura reconsiders getting rid of boxing rather than let Azteca step up or another competitor.
Another installment of this tonight on Versus if anyone's interest. It's also here: http://www.ringtv.com/fight_night/
I think I wrote this once before but I'll say it again. Big fucking deal. It seems every quarter we hear how boxing is headed back to tv again. New flash it's already on tv. You have Friday Night Fights, and VS, and you had the contender. None of them have made a fucking dent, and nor will they, not when tv companies have to compete with HBO, Showtime, and PPV to land the kind of boxers that will make mainstreamers tune in.

' YUP.....I don't give a fuck about Prospects from So Cali...don't care...I want to see 'em...not unless their is a bigger name on the card..i won't tune in...
Golden Boy's supposedly interested in a Wilson-Huerta rematch. Abner Mares is expected to continue his return on the Club Nokia card later this month.
It's an ambitious plan...hopefully he doesn't revert (Andre Ward-style) if he gets tested out of the gate. I'm trying to think if I remember much about Diaz from the last Olympics. Name sounds familiar, like one I'd taken notice of....but I didn't see much about him in the Olympic thread. Found some video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuI-DfZf3T4 Debut: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEF7K1aRLlA&feature=fvw
According to The Ring, Abner Mares will fight Carlos Fulgencio in an 8 rounder on August 27....David Rodela-Gamalier Rodriguez in a 6 rounder.
Boxing back on Versus Thursday night...Fight Night Club at the Nokia features Luis Ramos 12-0, 7 KO's and Charles Huerta 11-1, 7 KO's against a pair of losing records...Cristian Favela, 17-21-6, 10 KO's and Rodrigo Aranda 8-10-2, 2 KO's, respectively.

The fight night club shows are pretty crappy. Versus is off of directv still, I think, so them getting out of boxing isn't as bad as it could be, but with a name like versus, how the hell can you not be into boxing? The only way to make it work on the small time level is to align with a promoter and put up with their shitty matches so that you can have some quality prospects...a la top rank boxing/espn. Otherwise, it's going to be tough to keep a regular show going. Ballroom, Broadway...they do okay, but they have gaps in the schedule and I think regularity is important.
I don't have a problem with the idea of it, it actually shows some initiative on G's part, and in some ways, it is a grassroots approach...but the problem is none of these fighters have any name recognition and you need at least one fight or fighter of some kind of notoriety to get some attention. If some of them were '08 Olympians like Andrade or Yanez, it'd be one thing...like if Golden Boy featured Deontay Wilder, it might draw some interest or at least curiosity (although given the way he's matched, maybe not). But because there's not a lot of money in this, they're doing a lot of the costs and so they're keeping the budget small...and so they're hardly even drawing interest from boxing fans. Eventually, though, this could develop along with the fightrs. We'll see. Schaefer said in that Steve Kim article that they'll look to branch out into other cities. There's been a similar thing tried at the Fight Night at the Tank at the HP in San Jose, with four-round fights...someting I believe Roy Englebrecht has been a part of putting together.
