Unbeaten but unheralded Mexican Juan Carlos Salgado (22-0-1, 16 KOs), 130, greatly shocked the boxing world when he scored an unexpected TKO over previously unbeaten WBA super-feather champ Jorge Linares (27-1, 18 KOs), 129.75, a prohibitive favorite, at 1:13 of the opening session to capture the belt on Saturday in Tokyo, Japan.

I always stated Linares was overrated, so there is my proof.

    Really? How often?

Name a few world title fights over the last few years, where the huge favourite and champion was knocked out cold in one round. :dunno:

I knew that was would be your answers.

It´s just one of those boxing cliches. And judging by the rest of his resume Salgado is probably a little better than Prescott and not much else, but we´ll see.

Larios got stopped in 1 round vs Vasquez in their first fight then stopped him in a great fight in the rematch, buddy, 1st round KO's happen, evn Quintana was KO'd in one with a guy he schooled to an easy 12 round decision.
Doesn't mean shit, but good win none the less.

Dude that was seven years. How many world title fights have happened during that timespan? 1000? Williams was still favoured to beat Quintana in the rematch. Lopez and Ponce de Leon is the only recent example of an underdog catching a favourite and stopping him in the first round. It happens maybe in 0.3% of world title fights and with the first serious punch thrown? Salgado was a 10-1 underdog, too.

Not sure of the odds, but the most recent example I can think of not mentioned so far is Viloria-Ortiz.

Not disagreeing with your point, however.

If you count headbutts...maybe you could include Kendal Holt...again, not sure of the odds.

What about the Willie Jorrin rematch?

That's actually one that came to mind when he mentioned Larios.

In Sacramento, no less...out in one round his hometown.

Doesn't get much worse than that.

Although givent he first fight, I doubt Jorrin was favored.

Holt was favored pretty good in the rematch around -250. I am not as sure on Viloria but I know I bet him and he was the favorite. Around -200 I think but none of my damn accounts go back far enough but he was definantely favored.

    "First round KO's happen".

Yes, they happen to people with shit chins.

Salaco cited a few examples, but most of them weren't 1 punch KO's, and they are truly the exceptions to the rule.

If you get KO'd with essentially one punch in the first couple of rounds, chances are your chin is shit.

The most recent two are Khan and Linares.

I like Linares, and I felt he was legit, but he obviously doesn't have a chin.

I saw the fight, and he didn't even come close to recovering.

Lopez was mostly unknown outside Puerto Rico at the time. Only hardcore fans knew he was a real threat to Ponce.

Yes, nobody knew Lopez. The ones that had seen Lopez up to that point said his defense was suspect.

why does he have to have a glass chin?

he traded knockdowns when he won his first title against sotelo. he went ten rounds getting hit solidly every round by oscar larios.

maybe he just took a hard punch? seems like nowadays if you get knocked out, it means your chin is glass.

I mean hey Rocky Juarez got knocked down against Joe Morales who has 0 KO power...does that mean his chin is glass as well?

    Exactly.

Flash knockdowns are something that actually I don't think are that indicative of a bad chin. Sometimes it's due to balance, or shock etc, and as long as they get up and recover, I tend to think their chin is fine.

Getting hit with 1 punch, being out on your feet, and not recovering is something completely different.
