Getting knocked out doesn't mean your chin is glass. A lot of the time it's due to accumulation, tiredness, a heavy onslaught etc.

But getting knocked out early in the fight, in your prime, with 1 punch?

Tell me how many fighters there are that got knocked out in these circumstances, that have a good chin. There's certainly not many.

Marco Antonio Rubio. Might not have the best chin around but he's durable enough to qualify.

Yep, I'd say he qualifies. He's certainly durable enough.

Statistically though, he's certainly in the vast minority.

Going by statistics, I think it's safe enough to assume that someone who gets KO'd in the first couple of rounds by 1 punch, in their prime, is pretty chinny.

Is it possible that Linares proves to have a decent chin in the future? Of course, but statistically - it's unlikely.

    Agreed. It is unlikely.

It's not simply about his chin; it's also a matter of experience and ring smarts. I didn't watch the Linares fight so I don't know the details. But I do know that it's important for a fighter who's hurt to give himself time on the canvas to recover and also for him to know how to hang on and survive when he's unable to fight back.

Some fighters by the time they get hurt for the first time know either instinctively or otherwise what to do in order to survive (Cotto). Others do not (Linares apparently).

Also, when it comes to first round knock-outs, there's also the possibility the knocked out fighter wasn't properly warmed up or mentally prepared. This is another opportunity for a fighter to learn from his mistake and not make the it again.

We'll see. But it's stupid to say Linares has a bad chin because he was stopped in the first round. Especially when by all accounts it was from a shot to the temple.

Duran, John Ruiz, Forest, Michael Spinks, Joe Frazier, etc...The jury is still out on his chin. The fact is that this is boxing and this kind of shit happens from time to time.

    Duran?

He was knocked down by De Jesus in his prime with 1 punch, but he wasn't close to being out, he got back up and recovered.

The only examples you cited that count are Ruiz and Spinks. They were both blasted out with 1 punch, but both ended up having decent chins. Spinks hardly counts either as he was a light heavy really.

Joe Frazier doesn't count. He was never KO'd in his prime with 1 punch. Neither was Forest. Forest was hit with a barrage of punches and stopped.

Well Larios was pretty much out with one punch against Vasquez and he proved to have a very tough beard...
    His defense is just shit...

 Come on Barri. Duran was not in his prime, and he was fighting a much bigger guy. And even then, it was not really a 1 punch KO, he took a beating for 2 rounds that ended with 1 punch.

I have seen the first Mayo - Forrest fight, I seem to recall a barrage against the ropes, not 1 punch KO.

Gonzalez? I don't recall him being KO'd early with 1 punch.

Whether you think so or not Tam, Lennox was KNOWN as a chinny fighter, from those two 1 punch KO losses. Not a good example. Personally, I think his chin was average, but he's certainly not someone you could consider durable, especially given his reluctance to engage.

Rahman is also a bad example. He's hardly known as a durable fighter.

Spinks doesn't really count because he was a light heavy, fighting Tyson.

When did Arguello get KO'd early with 1 punch?

In fact I've just realised, you've completely misunderstood me.

I'm NOT saying if you get KO'd, your chin is shit, that would be ridiculous.

Here is a quote from me in this very thread -

As I said there, most of the time a KO is actually due to fatigue, accumulation, or a sustained attack.

What I'm saying is far more specific, I'm talking about people who have been KO'd just like Linares was, just knocked senseless with 1 punch, early in the fight.

Out of your list, the only 2 that seem to qualify are Lewis and Rahman, and neither of them are what I would consider to be a durable fighter.

All I'm saying is 9/10 times, fighters who get knocked senseless with 1 punch early, don't have a very good chin.

Sure there are exceptions, but they are few and far between.

If you were a betting man, you would bet on Linares getting KO'd again in the future, when he steps up the comp or faces a legit puncher.

    Was it?

That's a fair enough example then, Vernon did have a good chin.

Regardless of what happened early in his career, Gonzalez got KTFO out with one punch in his last fight. One of the KO's of the year so far.

Would I ebt on Linares to get KOed again sometime? Sure. 99.99999% of fighters get stopped in their career and if it happens once, it tends to happen again. There's the theory of "cracks forming" and so on, that seem to have some amount of merit to them.

Who's seen Salgado before this fight, that can make an assessment of his punching power?

15 KO's in 21 wins...been the distance with Ivan Valle, also went the route with Marcos Licona and Christian Favela, both pretty durable.
