I think Calzaghe colluded with those tactics for a few years though. I know its playing the psychologist but i don't think its until the second round of the lacy fight that calzaghe regained his balls and realised that he still had the ability to be dominant or competitive at a high level. The years of Jimeneza, Veits etc. probably didn't help, and it wasnt until he struggled with kabary saelm that warren decided it would be a good idea to take on the big fights i.e. cash out....which is pure speculation but there it is
I agree with the Bowe-Lewis thing. He actually let them film him put the title in the trash rather than face Lewis. :: Here's what pisses me off about Bowe. He was a lazy guy but he got up for Holyfield 2 out of 3 times. He can get up for the little guy, but he bitched out against Lewis. You can't make that comparison now. Roy is taking way bigger chances than he was willing to during his prime. I think he realizes too late the actual significance of securing his legacy and I think it's the reason he continues to fight. Even still, comparing a willingness to fight in Australia over Germany even back then is laughable. Plus DM was at the V. Hill fight. HBO showed him and said he was going to fight Roy next. Roy broke that rib and DM hopped on that plane and flew home at warp speed. :: I remember somebody once posted a picture of that. It was pretty funny.
Groupie? The only time you should be allowed to use that word is when it follows the words I-am-a - in a sentence you are in the process of completeing. Don't ever compare me to you. I'm a fan of a fighter, you are a nut licking groupie who has no objectivity whatsoever when discussing Floyd, or Shane for that matter. You've been on the forums as long as I have and yet somehow you still post like a fanboy rather than a true fan of the sport. If you consider me a groupie of Shane's what must you think of yourself when it comes to Floyd?
Bowe-Lewis. Yeah yeah, HBO is partially to blame, and the fight probably would've happened if both guys kept winning. Well they didn't, and we missed out on a potentially great matchup. So :flip: to Newman and Bowe. Thankfully no clowns have come saying "Leonard-Pryor" like they would've on other forums.
If you want to say Floyd ducked Margarito thats cool with me. No way did Floyd duck Shane he wanted to fight him for years, so yes you are making up bs about Floyd ducking Shane. Which isn't surprising since you hate Floyd and love Steriod.
How do you know Shane ducked Floyd? Because Floyd told you so. I've been reading up on this shit since day one and Shane never ducked Floyd. He didn't fight Floyd when Floyd was at 130 because there was never a demand for it. Floyd may have called out Shane back then but it wasn't any reason for Shane to take a fight with Floyd back then because Shane had 2 other belt holders in his own 135 lb division who everyone consider bigger threats than Floyd was. Not to mention Shane moved up and fought Oscar. So you can't be considered ducking someone if you actually move up in weight and take on a more dangerous opponent than the guy calling you out. Shane didn't duck Floyd lately because he'd already said that he intended to take a break after the 2nd Vargas fight. So if Floyd conviently calls Shane out, to fight during a period that Shane already said he would not fight and Shane once again declines just as he previously stated, then it can't be considered ducking. So taking all that into consideration, when did Shane duck Floyd?
Kostya Tszyu ducked: Oscar De La Hoya Shane Mosley Tito Trinidad Pernell Whitaker Ike Quartey Floyd Mayweather Arturo Gatti Julio Cesar Chavez (Kostya waited until Chavez was 46 years old until he fought him) Miguel Cotto
This criticism is pretty weak. Johnson was nothing but an opponent until he beat Tarver. Loss after loss. Thomas Tate? Mads? Branco? Reid2? Come on. These guys are no better than who he did fight. Ottke? Blame both, but I blame Ottke more. Calz and Warren do deserve blame, I agree, but it's pretty hard to pin down why.
I like how you put down everyone who doesn't belong and you leave out the rematch with Vince Phillips which most definitely was a duck job by Tszyu.
I would say the guys I mentioned were at the time better opposition than sobot, mc intyre, jimenez, pudwill, mkrytchyan, thornberry..in fact until ottke retired, his list of defences was superior to calzaghe's IMO...tate had actually been on a good run prior to the first ottke fight and in between the second ottke fight, he was the main american challenger at 168 I would say
I agree that they are better than the guys you listed. I don't think they are better than guys like Reid, Starie, Woodhall and Veit, though. Similar in talent to the guys you listed, though, and the guys you listed would have been better to get USA recognition like the guys on Ottke's resume at the time. Calz did not go hunting for better competition. He didn't travel. He didn't fight too often. He filled slots with some really shitty guys. Lots of good to be said about him; lots of things to criticize. At least he rammed Hopkins in the keester.
Agreed with most everything you said except that I don't think woodhall was ever a legit smw - as tidy a boxer as he could be, he was both undersized and didnt have the resistance at the weight...Starie was only ever a solid average euro level fighter...Veit was one of those guys who would have won and defended a WBO title many times if it hadn't been for calzaghe hogging the belt so long, calzaghe was just the wrong style for him completely
I can't quite recall it totally but it was like a picture of a plane flying away with a long light trail. The picture made it look like the plane flew away at warp speed or something and was pretty funny in the context of the post.
I know anything can happen in boxing but, my god, I think it would have been highly likely that Roy would have used DM as a 12 round punching bag, he'd have played him like an instrument, yes if the oppurtunity presented itself he should have 'proved it' ... but I couldn't see it going any differently than one of Roy's typical mandatories to be honest.
The opportunity was always there from the moment Dariusz beat Hill on free tv. Roy bitched out. I agree that Roy was the pick over Dariusz, but Dariusz brought far more to the table than almost anyone else Roy fought. Personally, I would rate Dariusz as his best win if it had happened. Guys like Froch can beat guys like Dirrell even if it doesn't seem like they should. We all know this. So did Roy
MichalSHITski COULDN'T Even Beat WHOlio Gonzalez...He had 0.00000% Chance of Beating Roy Jones...& MichalSHITski KNEW It, which is why he was CONTENT w/Riding Roy's Coattails for the Bulk of his Career... REED:hammert:
Unbelievable! Darius loses a split decision and Jones gets violently knocked out twice and yet somehow Darius would have 0% chance? This fight would've taken place at Lightheavyweight where Jones has been ko'd twice and knocked down by the light hitting Del Valle so without doubt Darius had a 50% chance of doing the same.
It takes two to tango though,.. I don't remember Dariusz slathering at the jowels to get at Roy, and I doubt Klaus Peter was throwing any paper planes to make it a reality.
Dariusz shares in the blame, of course. I believe that the fight was worth quite a bit more money had it taken place in Germany. With both having titles and great records and lacking other marquee competition, imo the best tie-breaker is money. So I blame Roy...more.
If you play the Gonzalez card, then you should also consider Johnson-ROy, because Dariusz was clearly old, worn and had plenty of weak performances before that one. Sure, even prime Dariusz would have little chance of actually beating Jones, but I do think he would have been Jones' best light-heavyweight win and calling him just a the guy who lost to Gonzalez is not being truthful (to yousrself mostly)
He Lost a Split Decision on what was Basically HIS HOME TURF & this was PRIOR to Roy Losing to Tarver & Glen Johnson...MichalSHITski had ZERO Chance of Beating Roy Jones & he KNEW That... F.Y.I., the "Light Hitting" Lou Del Valle's Record was 27-1, 19 KO's when he Faced Roy... REED::
