I think yes. One bad beating is enough, but Cotto has now taken TWO horrific beatings, not to mention he took alot of punishment against Clottey. In my mind he goes down as a very good fighter, who fell short of being great... similar to Vargas.

Nope. Get a new trainer, take a year off and come back. You lost to the greatest fighter maybe ever. and you gave him a very tough fight. No shame in that. A loss or two shouldnt mean its time to retire. that is why boxing is on a decline. When the best fight each other someone loses.

Should he retire?.....that's up to him. I think you can only say a fighter SHOULD retire, when it looks like that they are finished. Is Miguel finished?....no way. Yes he got beaten, and by the end, beaten badly last night, but he fought the best fighter in the world.

His next fights will show us how much long term damage was inflicted last night.

No, Cotto SHOULDN'T Retire...He's STILL in the Mix & Can Make for Some Good Matchups...REED Still Wouldn't Mind a Cotto-Floyd Matchup (but Only AFTER Floyd-Pacquiao), Cotto-Berto would B Pretty Good (ESPECIALLY if Berto Shocks the World by Beating Sugar Shane), an All Rican Affair w/Cintron would B Decent as Well...

But Having Said All that, it's DOWNHILL from here for Cotto...We've ALREADY Seen his Best....

I agree X. Me and my cousin discussed this earlier and just like you mentioned Cotto should retire. He has taken 2 beatings along with hard fights with Torres and Mosley. He's done. Good fighter but short from great. He has made good money and he should start focusing on his kids and family. The ride was good while it lasted.

He lost to someone with loaded gloves, then he lost to one of the best fighters of all time.

    So no, he shouldn't retire.

NO......take 8-12 months off, but keep his weight in check...get a new TRAINER may i recommend Roach, Nacho or Nasir(Mosley trainer)...easy comeback fights..back to back vs. Soto-Karass and Delvin Rodriguez...then back to the mix maybe a rematch w/ Mosley....or if Berto becomes "da shit" fight him.

I wish I were a mod, ex I would ban you for this. Stupid fucking thread. You are the type of clown that would have urged Holyfield to retire after he lost to Bowe. This is the worse type of fan reaction. As I have always said, Cotto was never a great fighter and he will ALWAYS lose to a great fighter. Cotto would still beat Berto or Cintron and maybe even Mosely again.

Agree. Cotto is not going to get any better. But he still has some good fights to offer.

I think a long rest is the first order of business. Then its time to get a REAL trainer who can organize a fight strategy.

A fight vs Ricky Hatton would be the perfect tune up for Cotto.

Blah. Cotto isn't that diminished. He just is not a great fighter and he has an awful defense. Put him in with Floyd and he will lose but look unshot. Who is there a welter anyway. Cotto is still a top five welter. Hell, move him up and have him fight that scrub Angulo and he will win or Angulo's daddy Kermit.

He could still have a big money fight with Hatton, a rematch with a plasterless Margarito. He still has something left. Cotto would have always lost to Pac or Floyd or any truly elite guy.

as a fan, I hope he doesn't retire as he can still give us some great fights. But if I were Cotto or a part of his familly, I'd urge him to retire, he's well off financially and already accomplished alot, why risk his health

I have to say - this is an odd thread.

Most fighters don't retire after only their second loss, at only 29 years of age.

He didn't look remotely shot yesterday either, he looked as sharp as he ever has, until Manny took over and bludgeoned him.

He can still beat almost everyone at 147.

I'd like to see Tito and Cotto go at it. Tito would use his head as a pinata.

Pack it up Cotto, you suck.

He should try and fight Hatton. Easy payday for Miguel.

I think a year off or so would do wonders for him. It worked for Roy.

Its how boxing fans are now. A fighter loses, its all over. The pressure to go undefeated in Boxing is ridiculous. Should pac have retired after his second loss?

STFU Ike! 1st off... Holy is a rare case, and a special fighter, and its a pretty safe bet that Cotto will NOT have a Holy type career resurgence. And I agree with you that Cotto is not a great fighter. To me he's the welterweight Vargas. Very good, but falling short of great. But after the beating he took vs Manny, I wouldnt make him a safe bet vs either Cintron or Berto. He had already looked dimished vs choking ass Clottey, now he'll be even more diminished.

Yeah Cotto would always stomp Hatton. But I doubt Ricky ever goes up to 147 again. But Ricky is so fuckin fat nowadays, but that if he comes back maybe he cant make 140 anymore.

Thing is, Cotto face has changed a lot due to the punishement he took throughout his career. If he continues fighting he will end up looking like Wanderlai Silva in a few years. While, as a fan, I want to see him continue fighting, there's no way in hell I would if I was in his situation

Thats why you need to stick to hair gel and body waxing and let the real fighters fight. You think Cotto gives a fuck about his face? He is in the fight business.

well, Wanderlai Silva, who is about as much a fighter as you can possibly be, cared enough about his face to get some plastic surgery on it to try to look like he used to. And considering the tattoos and the fact that he pluck his eyebrows, I think Cotto cares about his face too

I think he should take some time and think about stoping. He was on top for a long time and really has nothing to prove. I'm sure his money is fine and he has a beautiful family to enjoy. He is a victim of a crime that Margarito should be doimg time for. His skills are still top level but his mental is not right.

I agree with this, in fact I was talking about this just the other day.

Plasterito got off fucking lightly. Not only should he never fight again, he should do time for it.
