Yeah, I might have picked the wrong example with Hatton. Still, a bit of rest might do wonders with him, it's hard to infer physical condition from fights because the damage that counts is internal. You see guys getting KO'ed once and never be able to overcome it and other guys that suffer beating after beating and seem pretty healthy nonetheless.

I wish it was like that in boxing, but it's not. A fighter who goes 24-0 then loses, is perceived as "exposed" or a fraud.

When boxing craps on guys like PBF or RJJ and MMA hypes up guys like Forrest Griffin, we are on the losing side of promotion. Even HBO craps on their own fighters.

and part of that which was mentioned by Barron i think - is one of the problems - Hatton spent so much time building up this undefeated record that by the time he fought the top notch fighter he had already been thru so much punishment and so many rounds. He might be an example of someone who should retire, but i don't agree with anyone saying Cotto should retire just yet

Why dont you all just muzzle into the tits of illegal peer 2 peer downloads gentleman, and laugh hysterically at the concept of robbing good people like Bob Arum, Wilfried Sauerland, Don King, Oscar De La Hoya and HBO of thier money? :dunno: I do it all the time and I feel GREAT.

I'm not sure how the US schools system works, but kids aged 12-16 are being offered boxing as a weekly module in the physical education classes. Literally TENS OF THOUSANDS of kids are in the school gym, every week, hitting the pads and working the heavy bag.

    But yeah, boxing is 'dead'...

Is it really the case that a loss = huge detriment to drawing power?

Is that what happened with Pacquiao?

    He was "built up"?

He built himself up by smashing everyone in his path. If he didn't get that shot against Barerra, who knows what would have happened. Matchups need to be made and the fighters will sort themselves out.

I'm trying to understand your point...so who built up Manny Pacquiao..himself or 'boxing'?

He fought Ledwaba before he fought Barrera.

He fought on both HBO and pay per view before he fought Barrera.

He was part of the biggest ppv card in history before he fought Barrera.

Is marketing the only reason why a 'protege' is matched cautiously?

MMA's popularity isn't going to get higher than it is now. There numbers are down all the time.

It doesn't make any difference to me, but I am a boxing fan and so I watch almost any boxing I can get my hands on.

It does, however, make a difference to the casual fan. Hatton is a good example in the UK. His PPV figures up to and including Mayweather sold far, far more than his PPV's up to and including Manny.

Amir Khan is another example of a guy who can't sell eggs after his brutal KTFO by Prescott; a guy we now find isn't actually very good.

From a promotional point of view, fighters with an '0' in the loss column are more marketable. That is why they are so anxious to protect their fighters.

    So it seems.

MMA makes a LOT of noise, and there is no doubt that it has attracted a committed and hardcore following, but the numbers they put up aren't per se the threat to boxing that many in our sport seem convinced they are to be.

Floyd vs Manny will sell about 3 million PPV's in the US alone. When a UFC event comes close to that figure, there will be a debate to be had. Until then, boxing fans should calm the fuck down.

So it's the getting knocked out that causes the drop in numbers?

Its the losing. The manner is often irrelevant.

In all regions or just the UK?

And does this hold true for David Haye as well?

Or did he ever come back from losing his "0"?

Well that is not true. UFC PPV events do steadily well almost every time out. And they fluctuate with the quality of the card/main event

Haye came back from losing his '0' because most people didn't see him lose it, or at least don't remember it. Khan and Hatton spectacularly lost theirs in well publicised bouts beamed to the nation. When he lost, it wasn't even deemed newsworthy- just another prospect who lost a fight. When Hatton lost to Mayweather, the pictures of him having a nap were on the front of every single daily newspaper. The difference is massive.

I speak for the UK as someone who lives there. I have no idea if the same is true elsewhere.

So far as I can see, you are simply making mischief here in any event. If being undefeated doesn't matter that much, why are promoters so reluctant to throw their fighters against other, evenly matched fighters at a regular basis?

Are you actually trying to say that being unbeaten is NOT a major issue in marketability?

I don't think boxing is dead. I do feel, however, that it is in a very bad state right now. Not many marketable stars, shitty cards, alphabet title soup, shitty matchmaking, politics, etc. Bring in more marketable stars wont fix shit. The foundation of the sport needs fixing.

I was doing nothing of the sort- I was offering opinions based on observations and publically disclosed PPV figures.

You, on the other hand, have offered your usual contrarian rubbish, committing absolutely nothing worthwhile to the thread and ignoring a very simple question:

Do you disgaree, then that having a unbeaten record aids a promotor of a particular fighter?

I don't proclaim to know much about how fighters promoted in the UK, so I can't say I've formed much to form an opinion on the question, simple or not.

Boxing needs, not only a very discrete description of Floyd Mayweather's upcoming purse, but a streaming audio file, so that you can hear how much it is in coins, one at a time, dropping onto a table.

This is one of the main reasons I have argued that mma will have trouble overcoming boxing--the dearth of undefeated, seemingly unbeatable fighters. I still think it hurts mma, but they (re ufc) have managed to overcome this problem by keeping the pool of fighters small and focusing on fighter personalities. Only HBO really does this for boxers, but they focus more (or solely) on wins rather than personalities. Only a select few can lose and stay on HBO.
