I think El Indio has a very good chance to repeat what happened in the first fight. I never bought much into that first round stoppage in the rematch. Thoughts?
I think Williams has him figured out to be honest. Martinez is a bigger, better version of Quintana IMO. Williams looked like he was fighting in mud up to his knees that first fight. I've never seen him look that slow before or since. I wouldn't argue with a rubber match but I think Quintana only has a chance if it's at 147. It's probably not worth the risk for Williams to go back down to that weight for what would probably be a low income bout. I'd rather see him fight Martinez again if he can't get Pavlik in the ring with him.
Quintana is scared of Williams. This fight will never happen and doesn't need to, Williams KO 1 if it does.
I think Quintana gives Jesse Feliciano a rematch first after he fluked into a cut stoppage win after being dropped by the awesome Feliciano. :atu:

Of course there's a reason for a 3rd fight between Williams and Quintana but as time passes, it is less and less relevant. The first one wasn't meaningless but was it more meaningfull than the second? It depends on who you ask. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't protest if the fight was made, but I think there are better fights for Williams right now. Because it's the only time two fighters come in to fight a fighter like any other. Rematches change the dynamic totally and are then unable to be compared with any other kind of fight. For example, you can't compare Barrera's rematch with Morales to his fight with Tapia. Barrera went into that rematch having fought the guy before and thus had a different gaeplan that he would have had they been without that advantage. There's a particular kind of fighter who excels in rematches and there's a reason for that.
Interesting. I honestly don't know if I agree that it's as absolute as you say it is. Surely there are some cases where a rematch means as much or more than the original.
i agree that rematches don't count :hammert: and a lucky first round KO in the rematch means shit all too...it's unsatisfying and reveals nothing as to how the fighters match up
I figured that you'd say that and I think it's a pretty reasonnable take. However, you gotta take into account that some particular circumstances may make a fighter fight less good that he usually does. Also, a fight could be taken when one of the fighters is not fully develloped. That's why I don't think the first fight is the only meaningfull fight when you want to evaluate how 2 fighters really match up together. Just think about Marquez-Vazquez, Lewis-Rahman, Morales-Pacquiao. Just a few examples among a lot of other where you could say the first fight isn't the most meaningfull. Just my opinion of course...
