Arreola/Minto Williams/Martinez

I said that after the first round I questioned his chin at a higher weight class. He recovered and took everything the rest of the fight. I still think Pavlik KO's him though at mw

 

It was a good fight, and I woudn't complain either way if the fight were judged close. But I thought that Williams looked and acted like he'd been beaten up after the fight. Martinez looked tired and had bruises that wouldn't be visible on Williams, but Williams seemed the worse of the two. Also, Williams was bleeding and busted up before the headbutt.

Another thing about this fight is that Williams and Martinez didn't look like they should be in the same weight class. Martinez was supposedly the heavier of the two, but I don't know where he was hiding the weight. Williams is much taller, and looked bigger, which should translate to heavier. Is anything in boxing as it appears to the naked eye?

Williams was better off fighting Pavlik. I picked him to win by close decision, but I had Martinez winning, and I knew he would give Paul problems.

Gotta feel bad for Martinez though. Dude has been robbed THREE times in his last two fights. First he was robbed on what shoulda been a KO of Kermit the frog, THEN he had to settle for the bullshit draw even though he CLEARLY beat Cintron... now last night he was robbed with the horrific 119-109 score.

By rights Martinez should have wins over Cintron and Williams.

And Tall Paul is a good fighter, but his defense truly blows!

 

1st thing was Williams must have gotten his body protector from Oscar. That thing was up to his chest. 2nd thing Martinez won that fight imo. He landed cleaner harder punches. Williams missed alot of punches and alot of the punches he landed had little behind them because of Martinez's defence. 119-109 is such a bad score that i hope that that judge was paid off.

 

If the so called 'clean, hard looking, shot' doesn't deterr the aggressor or his workrate, then it's not enough to assume that just because it may have looked flashier, or crisp, that it hurt him more than his grinding superior workrate is hurting the negative bitch fighter,..if you're willing to attack your opponent so frequently you will inevitably become vulnerable to walking into the odd 'clean hard punch',.. that's all good if the bitch fighter manages to genuinely hurts the aggressor,..but if they dont,..they shouldn't feel they've won the round while covering up in a ball and sprinting around the perimeter for the majority of it,.. otherwise it's better off for everybody to come into the ring with the strict focus on counter-punching,.. then,.. who knows if there will even be a fight?... who's gunna want to force the action?...

The only way a counter-puncher should win rounds is if he blocks AND LANDS MORE, or evidently hurts his opponent with a particular shot,.. if not, then it is a very, very detrimental scoring precedent for the sport.

 

Paul Williams is the worst defensive fighter I have ever seen. He is one of my favorite aCTIVE fighters though. His fights are just great even when he was fighting a running octopussy like Martinez it was still entertaining. Having said that I think Pavlik will knock him cold although I have more confidence then Kelly does. Rumor has it he gets the runs when someone mentions Tall Paul's name. This is one of the worst duck jobs in boxing history only less offensive than Bowe ducking Lewis.

It's not only about landing more, it's about landing effectively. And I don't think more defensive fighters are bitch fighters. Williams combination of workrate, chin and reach is hard to match for a lot of fighters, they have to move and make him miss. Not stand in front of him and try to win a battle of attrition for your viewing pleasure. Anyway, I've already said I thought Williams won the fight saturday, I thought it was a damn close fight though. Martinez gave a very good account of himself.
