The old "Who Made Who" argument.

Freddie Roach: "I'm the best trainer in the world as I have the best fighter in the world"

Sir Roger Mayweather: "I dont have to tell Floyd how many rounds on the bag, cos he gone do it anyway"

Evander Holyfield, speaking on his trials with Manny Steward, once said that he wasn't going to pay anyone "Any more than $250,000 to remind me of what I already know"

So, do these trainers know shit?

    It VARIES...

Nacho Beristain is Obviously a GREAT Trainer...Manny Pac Becoming MORE than a Southpaw 1-2 KO Artist is a TESTAMENT To Freddie Roach Being a GREAT Trainer...But then U Have a Guy like Alton Merkerson, who DIDN'T Actually Teach Roy SHIT...EVERY BIT of Merkerson's Success as a Trainer is DIRECTLY RELATED to Roy Jones...

Yes, but with Merkerson staying out of Roys way may have allowed Roy to remain unrestricted by conventional training and helped him blossom. In that regard, Merkerson may be "great" in that he stayed out of the way.

Despite having a fair few champions from his gym, Brendan Ingle is one of the most overrated trainers around. He just happened to have some talented fighters walk in over the years.

With Enzo Calzaghe, never really rated that dude either, just happened to have an exceptionally talented son.

I think McDonnell will prove to be a very good trainer.

If there is a good example of a trainer who may make a difference, it's Ingle. You don't just 'happen to have talented fighters walk in over the years' who all employ a similar style unique to Ingle. And who are successful at the top levels with it.

Na the style he gets his fighters to employ are successful upto a certain point but comes apart badly against the top guys, Graham, Hamed, Witter, Rhodes, it's always the same story.

SND....i think you are doing Ingle a massive disservice. You can argue that he's not the most versatile of trainers, but his record speaks for itself.

Depends on the fighter and trainer. People for years kept talking about
"Mike Tyson needs to get back with Kevin Rooney". Rooney isn't some great trainer, that was a chemistry thing as they worked really well together.

Freddie Roach is a very good trainer as he usually comes up with good strategies for his fighters. I don't think he taught James Toney much though, as Toney already had all that experience and it's hard to imagine him learning many new things. I remember Roach actually saying that trainers are overrated since it's ultimately up to the fighters to perform. Angelo Dundee said a similar thing.

An average fighter with a great trainer isn't going to be a top level fighter. A great fighter with an average trainer can, however.

Enzo Calzaghe is deffo a bum. How he got "trainer of the year" is beyond me.
How many World Champs does he have right now, less than 2 years after Joe beat Hopkins? NONE.

He's very good, don't get me wrong, but only up to a certain point, at the very top level that style unravels badly.

It's near impossible to say how much a trainer has helped a fighter from an outsider's perspective unless you see some major changes to their game. Often times big changes aren't suitable for certain fighters and seem to backfire.

Other times trainers all of a sudden get a big reputation for a string of victories with different guys. A good example would be Buddy McGirt. He was highly sought after for a while. Now looking back how much success would you credit his training for alone?
