Presuming this fight is actually on, Khan deserves props for taking it, because it seems clear that Roache wants no part of it and there is no doubt that Maidana hits plenty hard enough to potentially give Amir fits.

It could be a very, very good fight to watch though...

This will be easier for Amir than alot of people think, regardless of what Roach said

I prefer not to second guess Freddie Roach on the matter of how hard fighting Marcos Maidana might be.

Should be an easy win, seeing that Khan is unquestionably the second best 140 pounder on the planet.

Who do you actually think is going to win?

I'm not sure. Khan has looked a little better since getting with Roach, but Maidana is tough and can punch, and presents a more difficult challenge than Kotelnik, despite losing to him.

Khan could quite easily stink the life out of Maidana for 12 rounds by throwing girly love taps and running away a lot en route to an unsatisfactory decision win IMHO.

Either that or Maidana punches him and his glass jaw into next year. Take your pick

I think Khan will fight a smart fight and if the knockout comes then it comes. The knockout will probably come for Khan because Maidana will take more chances than a Kotelinik for instance. If Khan stays disciplined and fights smart he should knock this guy out. Or of course Maidana could prove to strong and too good and knock Khan into bolivion.

Maidana didn't take the chances against Kotelnik, though.

I like this fight because it is an excellent matchup. I dislike it because I like both of the fighters.

Maidana's last fight was televised on TyC back in December and he looked like he always looks against overmatched opponents--damn good.

Props to Khan for taking a dangerous fight. Khan is obviously more skilled than Maidana, he needs to fight smart in this one though cause Maidana can crack. I'm not sure who I would pick, safe bet is probably Khan by UD though it wouldn't surprise me if he KO'd Khan. Maidana is certainly a better fighter than Prescott....by miles.

Roach had his big year as have his fighters. 2010 is going to be the year Freddie starts to lose and it will start with Khan and end with Pacquaio.

    From Dan Rafael

    • Schaefer said he's talking to HBO about junior welterweight titlist Amir Khan's American debut taking place April 10. "Amir will have his own date and one fight HBO is very interested in is Juan Manuel Marquez," Schaefer told ESPN.com. "Amir facing Marquez live on HBO, now that's a big fight isn't it," he said. Other bouts being discussed for Khan, include Paulie Malignaggi and Juan Diaz. But Golden Boy also needs to sort out the situation with Khan's mandatory against Marcos Maidana during a two-week window it has received from the WBA. Schaefer, who co-promotes Maidana, said his manager is coming to Los Angeles to meet with about the situation.

Thank you was just about to post this...

Juan Diaz - Lightweight - no power

    Paulie Malignaggi - light welterweight - 5 career KO's

Juan Manuel Marquez - lightweight - coming off on sided loss - aging smaller fighter

Count on Diaz or Marquez getting the fight...both are Golden Boy fighters. And before anyone starts talking about Marquez coming down in weight let's look at the size difference...Khan is at least two inches taller than Floyd and has roughly the same arm length. We all saw hom much trouble Marquez had closing the distance against Floyd.

I imagine the Marquez fight would be at 140, but i wouldn't rule out a lightweight bout or maybe a catchweight.

Either way, even with the size difference, it will represent a tough fight for Amir....he's not fought anyone who has anything like Marquez's hand speed and sharpness. And against Amir, an abundance of power isn't necessary

Marquez has decent power at lightweight at least.

In fact, I think Marquez would beat Khan.

btw, not that i thought i'd ever say this...but i have a little sympathy for Warren here. I think he's brought Khan a long pretty well...and not too many stiffs along the way. He actually made a few fights that had me picking against Amir.

Khan's size and speed (hand and foot) would completely nullify anything Marquez could do. Khan is a giant in comparison to the career featherweight, who's now clearly on his last legs.

Khan would handle him with ease....like he did Barrera, who's not so much more removed from his best than Marquez is.

This doesn't mean Khan is great or anything, it simple means he's being matched very carefully, against old, has-been fighters who have fought their career's at drastically lighter weights, in who's primes were around at least half a decade (or more) ago.

Well, thinking about it, you're probably right. Significantly bigger, faster, younger, fresher etc, he'd probably make Marquez look his age.

Marquez got some impressive KO wins at 135, but he did look his age against Floyd, and like you say - he is a career featherweight, Khan is a natural 140 pounder at least, probably more like a natural 147 pounder. He's a solid 5'10, once he fills out a bit more, he'll probably be ideally suited to welterweight. Well you know, apart from his chin :kidcool:

Marquez is, what, a year or so removed from smashing the shit out of two of the best three (at worst) 135lb-ers in the world. Sure, he looked old against Floyd, but he was fighting at 147 FFS.

He didn't exactly look like a busted flush against Diaz or Casa, did he? I disagree with comparisons between JMM at this point and MAB. Mab is MILES past his best. JMM is somewhat passed his best. The difference is HUGE imho.

If Khan was to fight and beat JMM, even at 140, I would consider that a very good win indeed.

    Huh?

Diaz was laying a beating on Marquez early in that fight, wobbling Marquez like a drunken sailor and out speeding him of all things. In the end, the class of Marquez shone through, but thats Juan Diaz. Paulie Malignaggi and Nate Campbell showed what his real quality was and neither of those guys were getting drilled like Marquez was and needed the come from behind KO to do it.

As for Casamayor? :shit: You're joking, aren't you?

What Diaz was doing early does nothing to detract from the fact that, in the end, JMM had taken control of the fight and ended up putting a controlled, systematic beating on Juan. That is before you consider the fact that Marquez ALWAYS starts like he's somehow in fallen into the wrong place instead of him meant to be a professional boxer.

As you say, though, his class shone through. JMM is a much classier fighter than Khan is. He's at least a level above him in that regard. At least.

The fact that Juan Diaz was overrated is fairly moot. I was never that impressed by him either, but not so long ago he was the unified champ at the weight. That was an excellent win for JMM, regardless of what Paulie has subsequently done.

As for Casa, you can call him all you like, and I have plenty of times over the years, but you cannot detract from the fact that he has always been a crafty bastard and, prior to JMM beating him, he was still at WORST a level better than Khan currently is and a top three 135lb-er.

I'm not necessarily saying that I'd pick JMM to beat Khan. I agree with your analysis of his considerable advantage in physical attributes. I just can't for a second agree that beating JMM at this point is not much more than beating MAB was. The difference is marked IMHO.

Honestly, Im not sure that Casamayor would have beaten more than one or two top ten ranked 135 pounders at the time Marqquez fought him. He was/is completely washed up and looking back, had been past it for probbly five years prior to that fight.

Every single "win" he recorded had an amount of controversy of some kind of another to it.

There wasn't much controversial about his knocking Katsidis the fuck out not so long ago.

Whilst Katsidis admittedly isn't exactly brilliant, he's a tough little bastard and Casa is the only person to have stopped him.

Not disagreeing. Doesn't detract from the fact that it wasn't a straightforward win, does it? In fact, it was an impressive win. By a guy that subsequently JMM knocked out.

I dunno about impressive. It was a win and a conslusive one, but I don't think pulling a hail mary shot out of your ass in a fight you got shit kicked in, against a guy of Katsidis' caliber is impressive.

Remember, this same dude got WHIPPED by a dude with half a chest a few months prior to that.

You're are on record as saying that a win by KO is as conclusive a win as a boxer can achieve- something I agree with in fact. Hail Mary shots? :shit:

The name of the game is to KTFO the other guy. If you do that, you win impressively, regardless of how the rest of the fight went down. I mean, really, what percentage of championship bouts actually end by KO? Very few compared to those won by decision, certainly.

Katsidis was KTFO. That is an impressive win.
