The highly rated trainers Ronnie Shields and Buddy McGirt continue playing strongly as potential candidates to replace Joe Santiago on the corner of former WBO welterweight champion, Miguel Cotto[IMG] , who succumbed in his last fight by TKO in 12 rounds against the Filipino Manny Pacquiao.

According to reports, Shields and McGirt, is not only being considered to head the corner of someone nicknamed 'Junito' who according to plans by the promoter Bob Arum, president of Top Rank, will reappear on June 12 at Madison Square Garden[IMG] against Yuri Foreman, owner of the WBA 154 lbs.

But Joe, who is also the match maker of Promociones Miguel Cotto, would not be out of the working group as neitehr would be South African Phil Landman, his conditioning coach, who allegedly would begin to train the former champ in the Añbergue Olimpico in March .

"We will be sitting down to talk more specifically on the corner and his next fight with our pormoter,"said Gaby Penagaricano legal counsel.

Incidentally, the corner of two-time world champion in different categories has a vacancy with the passing of his father recently Miguel Cotto Carrasquillo, who was acting manager in addition.

For the Pacquiao brawl with Cotto Carrasquillo worked well in the red corner his brother Jose Miguel and Santiago as head coach and cuts expert, Joe Chavez.

Its true. Flipper would drown under McGirt.

Sure, he would stick the jab out like never before, but drown.

And if he looked like he was going to swim.........McGirt would throw in the towl.

Shields is a good choice. Cotto only has about 2-3 more fights then he's retiring.

nice that he waited until after the most important fight of his career to get a real trainer.

I don't see a trainer improving Cotto. Get him into shape and let him fight.

i agree. still, doesn't mean waiting until after the pacquiao fight to get a real trainer was a good idea.

I disagree. I think a good trainer can help Cotto make a few adjustments to his game.

Maybe they can bring in some quality sparring partners for a change instead of the two guys that came with the gym rental in Miami.

Brian Perez should be forced to lace'em up. I could watch an entire week of 24/7 with that fat fuck being tortured by Miguel in training camp. Hanging around in Miami eating Nachos Del Fuego Con Carne with that blimp isn't going to make Miguel into a better fighter- I dont care how adept at paper work Fatty is.

If he chooses Shields, Miguel will have to come to Houston to train at Savannah's.

Shields will definitely have Cotto moving and boxing much more than he does now, that is for sure, and Miguel will get much better sparring here than he will up north with McGirt.
