Bad move by the UFC. Toney isn't a PPV draw in boxing, why do they think he'll be one in MMA? Besides, he's way past his prime, has never been known as a big puncher, especially as he's moved up in weight, and his conditioning has been embarrasing. This kind of move is better left for Strike Force, Dream, Shine Fights, the kind of organizations that need the freak shows to draw attention to them. Unless they really line some cans up for him, look for Toney's MMA career to be one and done after he gets subbed, GNP'd or his head gets kicked into the audience. Probably within the first 60 seconds of the fight. TFK
Finally MMA got some real shit talkers in Mayorga and Toney. Too bad both are shot and beating them proves noting. MMA is still years away from being a legit sport. Right now it's where washed up athletes from other sports go trying to get lucky.
Should be fun to watch. I want Toney vs. Couture. Two old washed-up has beens. Let´s do it. Toney has beaten Ruiz before. :crafty:
Wednesday, March 03, 2010 by Greg Savage (greg@sherdog.com) 22993 James Toney’s transition to mixed martial arts has begun. Juanito Ibarra, the former trainer of Quinton “Rampage†Jackson, told Sherdog.com Wednesday that he has been working with the 41-year-old MMA novice on the fundamentals he will need to add to his repertoire if he hopes to be successful in the UFC. “We have been working on stretching, sprawling and movement, all the things he will need to get a handle on,†Ibarra said. Toney has amassed an impressive 72-6-3 record as a professional boxer, picking up championships in six different weight classes over his 21-plus years in boxing. Ibarra said he wasn’t sure about an opponent or a date for Toney’s first bout. The trainer said he hopes Toney would be matched up with Kimbo Slice, noting that Toney should be given an opportunity to “get his feet under him†in the UFC. I actually see the Toney/Slice fight somewhat of a decent idea by the UFC. You can put on the mainevent card of a PPV, 2nd or 3rd fight. It gives a sliver of legitamacy to the winner. The loser gets thrown to the wolves on preliminary fights.
Toney is a six division champion. :bears: :bears::bears: Didn´t even know there were six weight classes from middle to heavy.
just when you think mma is really coming out on its on hershell walker, jose conseco, mayorga and toney all fuck it up and this isnt sideshow mma companies, these are the top comapnies in the world. how disgusting
I'm not denying washed up athletes have tried MMA, it's your ridiculous claim that MMA isn't a legitimate sport that I'm calling out as a weak troll attempt. But washed up athletes trying different sports isn't anything new. In fact, it was commonplace in boxing. But as MMA has surpassed boxing in popularity, now instead of trying their hand at boxing, they are trying it at MMA. Having athletes like Toney, Walker, Mayorga, etc try MMA is surely no worse then the boxing attempts by washed up football players like Mark Gastineau and Alonzo Highsmith, or pro wrestlers like Paul Roma, or actors like Mickey Rourke. TFK
It's still years away from being a legit sport IMO. When a pro wrestler can win a title in 3 fights that takes away from it's legitimacy. A pro wrestler couldn't do that in boxing or become the best NFL player in 3 games.
Weakest argument ever. Calling Lesnar a pro wrestler is completely ignoring his amateur wrestling background and his freakish size, strength, agility and speed. He's a once in a lifetime athlete who had an elite wrestling pedigree before turning to MMA. If you're gonna troll, at least come up with something better than that. TFK
Yeah, I brought that up a while back here... http://www.fightbeat.com/forums/showthread.php?t=31992 ...when the MMA haters were using the Lesnar win to bash the sport. RJP4P is such a failure of a troll when it comes to MMA. TFK
Just read the thread. I don't know what's funny, the boxing fans running to defend their sport or the inconsistencies of their excuses.
When did this happen. Being pretty sure and sure is 2 different things. Also thai boxing means the guy was already training with his hands. Surely you and your bf TFK and realise the difference between going from thai boxing to boxing and pro wrestling to MMA but i won't count on it.
Of course. 2009 PPV for the UFC was the highest in history. No other industry did better than the UFC in 2009
The UFC is a BRAND NAME, Not an Industry...What Brand Name in Boxing Put Forth AS MANY PPV's as UFC???...Correct REED if he's Wrong, but Didn't Top Rank Put Forth THE HIGHEST Grossing PPV of 2009???...Where Does the SINGLE HIGHEST Selling UFC PPV Rank, Next to Pac-Cotto???...Floyd-Marquez???... REED:hammert:
Top Rank puts out lots of PPVs per year. All that Latin fury shit. JCC, Jr is on PPV all the time. It doesnt do well. UFC is the only orginazation in the US that is a Household name. But Strikeforce is building up its brand and if they do well, expect Dream to get a good following here. They already have a huge following in Japan. MMA right now is more popular than boxing. Its not even a debate IMO.
UFC 100. Beat both of them 1. UFC 100: Brock Lesnar vs. Frank Mir, July 11, 1.6 million 2. Boxing: Manny Pacquiao vs. Miguel Cotto, Nov. 14, 1.25 million 3. Boxing: Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Juan Manuel Marquez, Sept. 19, 1.05 millon 4. UFC 94: Georges St. Pierre vs. B.J. Penn, Jan. 31, 920,000 buys 5. UFC 101: Penn vs. Kenny Florian/Anderson Silva vs. Forrest Griffin, Aug. 8, 850,000 6. Boxing: Pacquiao vs. Ricky Hatton, May 2, 825,000 7t. UFC 107: Penn vs. Diego Sanchez, Dec. 12, 650,000 7t. UFC 97: Silva vs. Thales Leites/Chuck Liddell vs. Mauricio Rua, April 18, 650,000 9. UFC 98: Lyoto Machida vs. Rashad Evans/Matt Hughes vs. Matt Serra, May 23, 635,000 10. Wrestling: WWE WrestleMania 25, April 5, 582,000 buys
Seriously man, does it even matter? Who cares which is more popular or is doing more PPV atm. Both can coexist fine people can be passionate about both of them.
What are you asking me for? I guess it matters with regards to the argument TFK put forth. My point is that UFC's popularity has surpassed boxings. UFC has the highest PPV of 2009. Both can co-exist, but its still clear that the UFC is on the rise.
