Appaloosa - Basic Western, but bare bones...........stripped down more then most Westerns. I didn't know Ed Harris was the Director going in so I assumed David Cronenberg was trying his hand at a Western. It had all his hallmarks. From the cast, to the emotionless sort of way the film was directed. Kind of cold and from a distance, with no real attempt to manipulate the emotions of the audience. Probably, a slightly tamed down version of Cronenberg, and maybe a bit clumsier.

As has been said already, there was one huge distraction. Even my wife, who's not prone to such things, says to me the second she came on screen................"who is that..........and what the fuck is wrong with her face." I said, "That's Scrunchyface Zellwegger", and she repeats, "what the fuck is wrong with her face?"

She did not pull off the ingenue well. The Ed Harris character should have stuck to whores and squaws, or go completely Cronenbergian and just grab Naomi Watts.

Nothing surprising about the storyline other then the Zellwegger character being a total slut (likely because of the lack of women in the Old West). All the usual Western cliches are here. The bad guy cattle baron, the helpless town fathers, The Bad-Ass Sheriff and his bad-ass deputy, the bad guy lackey in the bar who pushes the good guy just a little too far, etc., etc., etc..

Still, it was a decent watch. Not as good as other Westerns that have come out the last few years, but ok. Maybe because they were almost giving the audience a wink and an elbow in the ribs everytime they trotted out another cliche. They knew we had seen it all before, so they just presented it a little "off"...........if that makes any sense. :dunno:

    Great film.

I finally watched The Lives of Others. OUTSTANDING film. I know I
late to the party, but I really enjoyed it. Crazy that that Shiite was still going on so recently.

The lead actor (HGW XX7) was awesome.

It was laughably bad. They use the same sex scene twice in the movie, within the first 30 minutes. Humorously bad acting and writing.

The guy who made the movie now claims he meant all along to make it a comedy, but people involved in making the film said he was totally serious and trying to make it a moving drama.

You're right that score is too high. I'm going to adjust it to what it deserves.

You will heretofore be remembered as a genius who has good taste in movies. I don't know why everyone loves this movie just because Will Ferrell is acting like a child.

That film was so bad I posted that while I was still watching it.

I actually turned on the computer and posted because it was that bad. I borrowed it from a guy at work that loves it so I had to sit through the whole thing for the inevitable Q and A on Monday.

The 3 points are for the 3 times I laughed during the whole film. It is pitifully bad. This and Talledega Nights should have ended Ferrells' career once and for all.

It'd be a boring world if tastes were all the same. I liked Elf and thought Anchorman was OK so it isn't like I hate Will's work totally.

    Now then, some new additions:

    6 out of 10

Score looks low but it is the highest score I can give to a movie that I wouldn't buy and wouldn't go out of my way to watch again.

    Some spoilers ahead.

This isn't to say it's a bad film. I just think it tried to go dark but didn't end up going far enough. I'd suggest that Burton was reigned in a fair bit on this but don't have any evidence to that effect. Depp was good as usual if a little underused. The girl that played Alice did a good job also though I found the eventual change from 'lost little girl' to 'monster slaying warrior' forced and more than a little shallow.

In the end, I walked out thinking to myself that this was a film in which NOTHING ACTUALLY HAPPENED. It's not that there is no action or good looking effects as the film has its share of both. It just felt like there was no real depth to the story at all. No real meaning. When it appeared that The Mad Hatter was going to be executed, I thought the film was really about to hit its stride, that the stakes were going to be raised to a level where you could believe Alice would pick up the Vorpal sword.

Needless to say, it didn't happen. Nice effects and some good performances but pretty forgettable when all's said and done.

Absolutely love this film and really shouldn't. Acting isn't great and the storyline is shallow at best but there's something about this flick that is just so damn enjoyable. Dated but not in a bad way. Something about the storyline lends itself to the 70's period and even the music that I would turn over if it was on the radio is enjoyable during the viewing.

An instant buy that stands up to repeated viewings and really that's the type of film that gets high marks from me.

I finally saw Avatar. It isn't upto the hype, but is better than most films which send audiences ga-ga over effects. Cameron's made a genuinely good, enjoyable film --- but not something of legend, as some would have us believe.

I liked Step Brothers, but hated Talladega Nights. I mean hated, to the point of being pissed that I let my nephew talk me into renting it.

I like Will Ferrell, but not to the point where I'd see one of his movies just because he's in it. I've never seen Semi-Pro, for example, and really have no desire to.

True, the cave dwellers werent great but the first one was as much about the characters who were a step above the usual horror list of usual suspect characters...the second one is all about the monsters plus it has one or two stupid plot twists which dont work
