Aside from hard work and dedication I improved my diet. I think you have to eat right if you want to make serious strength gains. I also focused on the basics. My squat is actually a real squat now instead of the half ass squats I used to do. I focus on triceps, shoulders and back alot more too. I also conditioned my mind by stacking the weight on the smith machine which is good because I work out alone so I have no one to spot me.At the end of the day though unless you go the Pedquaio route a good clean diet and lots of rest helps the most IMO.

But how high should you lift the dumbell? Since I have heard that if you only do it with your am, it does not help. That is my problem

If you keep your whole body tense and use a heavy enough weight through the full range of movement you cant go wrong on that one, your body'll HAVE to use the right muscles to make the weight move. Lift it as high as you can without twisting or dipping down on you other side. First few times if you wanna focus on making your back contract that might help, but really once the weights heavy and its moving the right way your body is sorting all that shit out for you.

you misunderstood my post lol...What I was saying was I acclimated my muscles to the weight by practicing it on the smith machine. 255 is my free weight max!

Oh, good! :cheer: And that BTW, is a pretty fucking smart idea, you may have finally found the only useful purpose for a smith machine!

Just turning it around to give Barristan some perspective, Hutster. I was happy for him being able to set a new personal best. He went from being cool in this thread to a bit of a dink in the other one.

That's what funny about much of the stuff a certain morbidly obese poster said. It probably rings true for him if he wants to believe it badly enough. Viewpoint is everything.

Ah the internet. Where every average big three total in every thread is higher than your local powerlifting gym. 210s allot stronger than 90% of the guys in my gym, that's for sure.

Really? That's weird. Most of the high school football players can do 220-350.
Well, at least the linemen and linebackers and the star runningback.

Most, no. Only in internet schools. The ones who go on to a higher level, for sure. 210 isn't a great bench, but it takes a few months proper good training for MOST people. The average guys will start repping between 120-150. 300 is a lifetime goal for most people. Some guys can get there quickly and surpass it and go on to bench 400+ but these guys are super rare and are usually either competitive athletes in some capacity or on roids. 400lb benches is the kind of strength that wins you state titles at raw powerlifting championships.

I wouldn't worry about how much you bench, its just a number. Trust me, if you are constantly chasing that number and always trying to max out on bench, or any exercise for that matter, you will regret it later. I was one of those guys when I was 21-30. I doubled my body weight on the bench and threw up way more weight on military and incline/decline than my joints really could handle. Eventually it caught up with me and now I suffer from chronic back/shoulder pain. Not worth it a bit. Just lift what you can handle, 10-12 reps with good control of movement and you will have good results. Follow this advice and you will able to work out your whole life, rather than just certain excersises like my dumb ass.

If you aren't upping the weight there's ZERO point in training. Agree you've got to be very cautious and PATIENT though.

Explain to me why you need to keep upping the weight??? Ever hear of maintaining? Weight training is not only about getting big. Of you think than you are going to continually up the weight indefinately you are in for a rude awakening.

The point in weight training is to get stronger.:notallthere: Progressive resistance. Sure, if you've already been training for a few years and are at a strength level you're satisfied with, by all means maintain, but a guy with a 210 bench is not anywhere near that stage. As I said, up weights cautiously and patiently, but if you're going week after week and not getting stronger you may as well waste your time doing something fun.

  26. Bob N Weave

    Bob N Weave Guest

Understood. Yeah, iI meant once you reach a respectable size/strength it's all about maintaining. Some guys just don't get that though, they just want to keep powerlifting forever and its just not smart.

Yeah, well I suppose once guys get close to their potential and still aren't satisfied, thats where the problems start. Some guys only have a 320 or so bench or 480 or squat in them, full stop. They just aren't natural athletes. Me among them. And if they keep looking over at the naturally bigger stronger guys and push the envelope aggressively they'll definitely get injured. Ditto for people being impatient with the progress their body will allow and rushing the jumps they take. Gotta know your limitations!

Maybe it's just because my school has ridiculous strong people and finished 2nd in powerlifting in the state. And this was a down year, considering last year, we had a guy who could squat 700lbs and deadlift 600lbs. His bench wasn't that good though, only 300 something. This yer we have a guy who can bench 400 but his squat isn't as good and his total isn't as good as last year's guy. And the team's runningback can do multiple reps of 250. His max is probably 275. Most of the starting lineman do around the 200-250 area, with the squats usually being 400-500.

Alright that was an exaggeration. I know for fact two of my personal friends can squat a little over 400, both on line. And the DT can squat 500 and bench 400(a little more than his bodyweight >_>). I'm just guessing the other linemen are somewhere in the ballpark.
And yea...the kid last year was the strongest person I've ever met in my live. 700 squat at 18. Lots of guys are projecting him to hit 1,000 in his prime.
