The pound for pound debate at the start of the last decade!

The golden days of boxing message boards had to be around the year 2000/2001 when Mosley, Trinidad and Jones were all undefeated (I'll ignore the griffin DQ "loss" for the sake of the discussion)

Most of the debate cented around who was the deserved holder of the Pound for Pound title.

Most considered that Jones was actually the most talented fighter of the three and in a P4P head to head would beat either, probably with ease...but at the same time people felt that Roy ran from all challenges (Jirov, Darius, Calzaghe, rematch with Hopkins etc) and therefore tended to discount him.

As such, it was typically considered to be better Shane and Tito.

Shane had moved up from lightweight and beaten De La Hoya, uncontroversially, in a great fight and then went on to cement his status by destroying formidable world beaters called Cameron...er...Antonio Diaz, Shannon Taylor and Adrian Stone.

Trinidad had beaten the same De La Hoya in a controversial manner, after being the first man to handily defeat Pernell Whitaker, but then moved up to dethrone the previously unbeaten 154lbs champions David Reid and Fernando Vargas. Of course he squeezed in a little defense against Mamadou Thiam in the middle of all that. He then moved up and defeated Joppy for a version of the 160lb title.

So let's consider these fighters before Tito lost to Hopkins and before Shane lost to Forrest.

Who do you think, deserved to be considered the pound for pound.

 

I won't post my reasoning anymore but in my opinion it was Jones by a clear distance

 

I had Floyd ahead of Roy sometime around this period. I think it was post-Corrales, post-Harding, and pre-Castillo 1.

 

In retrospect the correct answer was probably HOPKINS, who languished down at about 7 or 8 on most people's lists. At the time I thought Shane deserved it. And if it's between Shane & Tito looking back today I'd stand by that. Tito was hella overrated. Jones didn't deserve it on general principle at that moment.

 

Where's Floyd? Dont you know how much money he has?

 

I thought Shane was more overrated than Tito, naturally. Even the Tito fans knew Trinidad's limitations, they were just fans of his offensive ability (which was stellar), his stamina, his recuperative abilities and his power. No one called Tito a master boxer.

Shane fans, on the other hand, felt that Mosley could do it all: box like a Jones or Mayweather, slug like a Marciano, walk on water and the whole nine yards. And this based on just one fight with Oscar.

Roy Jones was undoubtedly the best fighter around at that time. Whether he deserved it or not is irrelevant..he was the p4p (honourable mention to James Page).

 

I always said at the time that Floyd was a better fighter than both Tito and Shane. I had him second only to Jones in terms of ability. Problem is he hadn't done quite enough at the time to be called the P4P even though in retrospect he probably was the P4P.

I think Shane was definitely a better fighter than Tito. He was overrated as hell at the time too, but Tito mania was the most insane mass hypnosis in boxing history.

At that time I would've given it to Trinidad. Jones was great, but he wasted too much time fighting Dog Catchers, Firemen and Plumbers.

Trinidad and Mosley were "hotter" around that time but Roy was still the best fighter in the world.

 

REED, his competition was steady. It might be best to phrase it as, he hadn't taken a single P4P status affirming risk in 7 years. And I think it was right that most people felt there should be some consequences for that, even if only symbolic, such as lowering him on p4p lists.

He should have made at least ONE of the Hopkins, Calzaghe or Darius fights happen, IMHO. They were right there, big, meaningful fights and he should have chased them down. And failing that he should have went to cruiserweight or heavy earlier in search of a fight that proved something & defined those years of his career. It was his career the onus fell on him. As it happens he may as well have retired in 1998 and come back in 2003 for all he did for his legacy.

Virgil Hill, Lou Del Valle, Otis Grant, Reggie Johnson, Richard Hall, Eric Harding, Julio Gonzalez, Clinton Woods, John Ruiz, Antonio Tarver...Sure, there's Ricky Frazier's, Glen Kelley's, David Telesco's & Derrick Harmon's Sprinkled in Too, but the GOOD Faaaaaaaaaaaaaar OUTWEIGHS The Bad, Hut...Of the 1st Set of Names, ALL But Hall & Harding WON World Titles...Some of them MULTIPLE Times...
