I'd say summer 2002 will never be duplicated. No fight ever had the kind of hype and intensity amongst fans leading up to that fight did and likely never will again. If you weren't for one or the other, then you weren't a fan of the sport in the least. That period of craziness on boxing forums all over the internet was insanity! Everybody was on the edge of their e-seat, typing like mad motherf*ckers, trying to hype their guy to the moon!
    :bears:
And if you need me reminding you of what fight it was, then you best scroll on...
Any other candidates for big fights which resulted in message board craziness?

Isn't this a General Forum question?

Anyhow, for me it was the buildup to Hopkins-Tito in the summer of 2001. That was a wild time.

In retrospect, it amazes me how many thought Tito was going to crush Hopkins. Sure, there's lots of guys who will say they knew Hopkins was too big and strong, but I thought he was in for a long rough night although I picked him to win a decision.

Move it to Gen forum, Buddy.
Also, Tito/Hops got pushed back because of 9/11 which happened a few days before the fight. And Tito couldn't get back home.

You're trying to tell me that? I had tickets and hotel reservations for the fight, dude. The switchboards were jammed with people trying to get refunds. I wound up getting it, and I used the cash to buy a new computer instead.

The guys we had on Boxingtime made the Jones/Ruiz build-up fun

    Oscar/Vargas was a blast too.

Did you end up going to the fight?
Also, kinda funny story. When 9/11 happened, I was in the library in my college and students were talking about it all over the place. While news was coming out that hundreds of people had died in the buildings which collapsed, all I heard from another dude in the library who was a fellow boxing nut was "Sh*t, does this mean Tito/Hopkins is off?"
I'm like "Man, have you any idea of the catastrophe that's just happened right now?" They'll be counting bodies for weeks and you're pissed about a f*ckin' boxing match?"
    Some whacky sh*t!

Back in the CBS and Beebe days of the late 90's.

Although I still like the forums just fine now, back then there was some novelty to it.

The time prior to Lewis-Tyson was pretty heated because we had a lot of rabid Tyson fans (and you know how they get when someone isn't kissing Tyson's ass) like Esk, Orion, Kid Dyamite and others around to provide unintentional comic relief.

What stood out was many Tyson fans picking Tyson to win by an early KO (Esk said something like "Tyson by first round KO in a peformance so tight you would think it's a virgin") and then after the fight backtracking and saying stuff like they "knew he would lose all along". Plus it got really quiet for a while as they all disappeared. And I also remember Stafford abusing his moderator status by deleting topics that were mocking Tyson after the fight.

Does anyone remember Conan and "The Tuamen"?

Esk, Kid Dynamite, Orion, and a fair number of others were huge Tyson fans.

Everlast argued with me that Tito was going to crush Hopkins. I made money off of Everlast for that fight and Mayweather-Corrales.

Oh, and on Boxingpress, there was a fair number of people who thought Hamed would crush Barrera. My mistake, I think I took money from E-last for Barrera-Hamed...not Mayweather Corrales.

"Definitely" the aftermatch of Lewis-Tyson. "In primes Tyson would have" crys were the most amusing thing ever

    I'd say 2001 for me...

Trinidad-Joppy on the heels of Trinidad beating Vargas the previous December had guys SERIOUSLY thinking Tito could beat Roy Jones.

Mayweather vs Corrales - Floyd's best win to this day. Boxing clinic

Hamed getting his ass handed to him by MAB

    Rahman KOing Lemmon

    Tszyu's KO of Zab Judah

Mosley coming off win against Oscar the previous year...

    Best time in my opinion

It's not my fault you chose to abuse your moderator powers...which I specifically remember because I was one of the victims. And at least I didn't mention you as one of the Tyson backtrackers, which you were.

I didn't abuse any moderator powers. IF, and that's a big if, I closed a Tyson bashing thread.....it wouldn't have been because of "tyson-bashing" per se. that's ludicrous....and I woudl have been called on it by the admin.

Like I said before...you obviously dream about me at night you obsessed freak.

Lead ups to very big fights are usually good times on forums, we get the best and the worst of some posters. The PED scandal reminded me of these lead ups too. Too bad we didn't get Pac-Mayweather, it would have been great. The lead up to Tito Vargas is one I remember on Boxingpress even though I was more a lurker than a poster.

I love aftermath threads too. Examples :

    "The better man lost!"
"Joppy lost because of the ring"

If I had to choose a period it would be the early 2000's during the prime of the last generation of great fighters. Right now It's rather bland. I must admit I'm kinda losing interest in boxing right now...

wouldn't say I'm losing interest we just need different rivals instead of foolishly hanging everything on Mayweather vs Pac. The day after the fight...what then?

One huge event doesn't change anything...it's a series of great fights which makes the sport go. Kinda what I said about why 2001 was a great year (in my opinion).

Fighters in multiple weight divisions with huge upsets...expected results TT'S what the game needs to create excitement. Kinda like the NCAA tourney...we watch for the upsets...it adds excitement. This year's tournament has been great (save for fucking Duke making the final four).

I think boxing needs the same.
