GF invented the term "The Super 4" which consists of Cain, Dos Santos, Carwin, and Lesnar. The 4 hottest heavyweights in the UFC right now as we speak. But now we have Roy Nelson who, despite his less than remarkable physique, is getting it done in the octagon with dominating win after dominating win. He's got serious hands and a great ground game obviously. He's not going to be mauled by any of the top 4 I don't think. Who of the top 4 do you think Nelson has the best chance of beating?
He isn't, but he has good enough BJJ and experienced enough to give Cain and Carwin some problems on the ground. He also has a solid beard. Dos Santos is a different story beings his background is BJJ and not wrestling. I really want to see Roy step up and fight a guy like Mir or Gonzaga. Someone just out of the title hunt but not ten miles from it like Struve.
He's been stopped with punches before. And Carwin and Dos Santos can knock out a prime Mark Hunt. Cain is also superior in terms of technical striking. And Lesnar would just give him the Mir treatment. Nelson is so big, it's not like he is the super dexterous guy who's gonna catch you with shit from the bottom.
Ummm. He has two wins in a row that were preceeded by 2 loses in a row including the crushing KO loss to Arlovski. Nelson is an experienced guy and uses it well. But let's not get carried away. But since you asked, I think all of the top 4 handle him pretty easily especially the three with a strong wrestling base that can keep it standing. But even JDS, who doesn't have the wrestling base, is better on his feet given his kickboxing skill and would likely treat Nelson like AA did. I do think Nelson is probably among the top 10 HWs fighting in the UFC right now. I would love to see him get Nog or Mir next.
I see it very similar, I like the Mir fight. But just a thought, the 3 with the strong wrestling bases will most likely try to take it to the mat, you don't think?:dunno:
I like Nelson very much and think he is very good. But he is Ben Rothwell good, not top of the heap good.
I don't think so, but I may be wrong. I really think Carwin and Lesnar would bomb Nelson out of the ring.
Hmmmm. Maybe. I think Brock is still unproven in his stand up. But I do know that he's been able to drop everyone he's faced with single shots. He is definitely heavy-handed and I seriously doubt Roy Nelson could take those bombs.
It is kind of cool though, Roy throws a little different take on the HW division. I don't think he'll ever be champion, he just matches up stylistically very interesting with alot of the guys.opcorn:
Yeah single shots is the problem. What happens when he actually has to stand up with a legit striker? We all know that Randy is old and Mir goes into a shell when hit. From what I have seen of his standup, he just seems soooo sloppy and lumbering.
It would be better for Roy to face these guys sooner rather than later. He doesn't need more experience, but they do. I think he would be competitive.
You guys are seriously overating Nelson's stand up. The guy couldn't even hurt Andre Arlovski, who falls down when somebody sneezes in his direction. A couple KO's over Schaub and Struve does not mean he's a big time puncher. There's no way he beats Lesnar, standing or otherwise. TFK
Its a good point about the fight with AA. But I am not so much saying anything about his standup, I think with Lesnar,Carwin, and Cain that they all have a wrestler's mindset and at sometime it will go to the mat. It could get interesting there. I do expect all three to win, but Roy is a crafty veteran with real BJJ.
I don't think that Nelsons standup is that great, I just think that Brocks is really bad. We really havent even seen Brocks standup ability. He knocked a couple of guys down with lunging straight rights because they were completely convinced that he was going for the takedown. Besides that straight right, Lesnar is as sloppy as they come. Now that he has a couple of fights under his belt, fighters will be learning what to expect from him, and he will be forced to fight standing for more than one punch at a time. I guarantee when that time comes, everyone will see how sloppy it is. I mean, the guy even looks slow/sloppy hitting a heavy bag!
